Social Isolation and Loneliness as Indicators of Healthy Lifespans
Research has shown that social isolation and loneliness impact a person's mental and physical health. This article explores the association between social isolation and loneliness with specific focus on how a person's longevity may be affected by mental health concerns or physical disease.
Loneliness Cited as a Critical Influence on Social Connection and Mental Health Outcomes in Older Adults
A recent longitudinal study conducted by Yale University researchers investigated whether loneliness or social isolation had a larger influence on mental health outcomes in older adults. Over a 10-year span, this study examined the social connectedness of nearly 5,000 adults. The research found that loneliness, not social isolation, served as the more critical pathway from social connectedness to mental health. However, researchers advise that future interventions should continue to prioritize establishing quality connections to improve mental health outcomes.
Trends Worldwide Show Loneliness in Older Adults Decreasing Over the Last Three Decades
In this 2026 systematic review, researchers analyzed more than 120 studies across 10 databases to examine the trends of loneliness for older adults across the globe from 1997 to 2025. The findings indicate a slight decrease in older adults reporting loneliness over this time. Loneliness levels were highest in Europe, as compared to Asia and North America, but relatively comparable between men and women.
