A Note from Board President Caty Husbands
|
|
Greetings Englewood community! My name is Caty Husbands. I am excited to be entering my 3rd year on the Englewood Board of Education and my first term as president.
When my husband and I learned we would be moving to Denver nine years ago, we were not sure where we wanted to live. Leaving a rural community in California, we were hesitant about living in a huge city and having our kids go to school in such a big school district. That is when we found Englewood. Nine years later, we could not be happier with the choice we made. Both of our kids went to elementary school at Charles Hay and then on to Englewood Leadership Academy and Englewood High School. They belong and they thrive because they are surrounded by this exceptional community.
Being elected to the Englewood Board of Education is a great honor, and I am inspired by the acts of kindness and the determination for greatness that I see from the students, staff, and families in our district. There are countless examples, but one, in particular, I would like to share. I became the BOE representative for the Language Development Council when I initially joined the board. The LDC celebrates the diversity in Englewood Schools by providing fun monthly activities and support for our bilingual and multilingual families. During the first meeting I attended, I got to watch kids sparkle with joy as they assembled gingerbread houses and listen to the families around me speaking Chinese, Arabic, Spanish and more. The LDC has grown membership over the last two years under great leadership and continues to find even more creative ways to support and celebrate diversity.
Beyond the boundaries of Englewood, I have had the opportunity to represent this great district at both the state and national levels. As a member of the Federal Relations Network for the Colorado Association of School Boards, I traveled to Washington DC to represent our district and meet with congressional leaders to press for education funding reform. One of the priorities that I brought home from that trip was education around the upcoming decennial census (Census Day is April 1, 2020). The National Census happens once a decade and provides the population data used for many of our foundational federal funding programs, including Head Start, Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and Highway Planning and Construction. Without an accurate count, we will miss out on funding that can help our community. Over the upcoming months, you will be hearing more about the Englewood School District’s efforts to make sure that young and old alike are counted. Stay tuned.
I look forward to the work that lies ahead, and I thank you for the privilege to serve this great district.

What You Should Know about Teen Vaping
|
|
E-cigarettes are now the most frequently used tobacco product among adolescents. Did you know that addictions that start in your teen years are very difficult to break free of? Did you also know that e-cigarettes deliver higher levels of nicotine than cigarettes, making them highly addictive?

Englewood Schools is excited to be upgrading Pirate Stadium at the Englewood Campus! Our new stadium will create an engaging atmosphere for our Englewood families and visitors. As a centrally located facility, we receive many rental requests and host events from all over the state. Our newly renovated stadium will represent Englewood at its best.
In this project, we will be adding a new concession stand, new bathrooms, and additional seating. The athletes’ experiences will be even better with team rooms onsite as well as adding an eighth track lane - allowing Englewood to host more track events with a standard-size track.
Important Note:
As part of the stadium construction process, the east parking lot by the stadium (off of Clarkson) will be closed beginning Sunday, December 15 through August 1, 2020. Only school buses will have access to that lot during this time. No student drop-off will be permitted. Suggested alternative parking is available on Mansfield Ave. south of the stadium, or in the parking lot on Logan St. just north of the Tennis Courts. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience!

EHS Choirs did a GREAT job Tuesday, Oct. 29 at the annual District Choir Tour to Bishop and Clayton Elementary schools...before the snow took over! They brought the gift of music to brighten the day of hundreds of young children! After the snowy week, the Tour picked up for the Middle School on Wednesday, Nov. 6th, where there was more music and joy to be had! TEC-Middle School Choir also did a wonderful job sharing in their portion of the performance. Way to go, EHS Choirs, and TEC-Middle School Choirs!
