Summer Reading at Englewood Public Library

Fun and learning are in full force at Englewood Public LIbrary!

Summer reading is a partnership between Englewood Schools and the Englewood Library and is meant to encourage students to keep reading & learning all summer long.

Students earn small prizes for each hour they read and bigger prizes for completing reading logs! Each weekday at 1:00 p.m. there are fun activities inside the library. To see a full list of the daily activities, check out the library's website.

Keeping students reading over the summer is important and helps prevent learning loss over the summer. For tips on getting kids to read over the summer, click here. You can also sign up for reading tips on the go by texting READING to 41411. Read more about the texting program here.
Charles Hay & Clayton Students Tour New Buildings
In May, students from Charles Hay and Clayton had the opportunity to see their new schools for the first time. The students were elated and surprised at the progress and design of these new buildings.

Construction on the new Charles Hay and Clayton elementary schools will be completed this summer. The old Charles Hay building will be demolished in July and the south wing of Clayton will be demolished in June to make room for a new playground. Cherrelyn Elementary students will be attending school in the remaining areas of the former Clayton building while their school is under construction for school year 2018-2019.

To see more photos of the Clayton and Charles Hay student tours, visit our Facebook page.

Plan to get a first look at the completed buildings at our Grand Opening events!
  • Clayton: Thursday, August 9 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Charles Hay: Friday, August 10 at 4:00 p.m.

Regarding 13 Reasons Why Season 2
The Mental Health Teams in Englewood Schools work hard to identify students who may be experiencing suicidal ideation and to put in place interventions and supports for safety. Part of this work is increasing awareness about community events that may lead to possible contagion with our youth.

We wanted to provide you with an update regarding a Netflix series that debuted last year titled  13 Reasons Why  and its possible impact on our students.  13 Reasons Why  gained popularity among youth last year and may increase suicidal ideation or attempts. On May 18, 2018, Netflix released Season 2 of this program. We, as Mental Health Teams, wanted to be mindful that as the end of the year approached, we provide you with resources to best support your student over summer break.

While the efforts we are taking in Englewood Schools are important, what you do as a parent/guardian is equally important. The most important thing YOU can do as a parent/guardian is TALK to your student about what they can do if they themselves or a friend is expressing thoughts about hurting themselves.

Please consider the age and developmental stage of your student before allowing them to watch  13 Reasons Why . We do NOT recommend that students with a history of suicidal thoughts, depression or mental health concerns watch this program. If you allow your child to watch this series, we recommend you watch it with them and engage them in discussion afterwards.

Please find more resources for speaking to your student on our website. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe and healthy!
