The Englewood School Board Experience
Englewood Schools has two seats on its Board of Education up for election this November. We invite anyone interested in running for school board to attend a no-obligation information session on Tuesday, May 21 at 5:30 p.m. at ECE Maddox (3838 S. Huron St.)
My name is Tena Prange and I am the President of the Englewood Schools Board of Education. I am currently in the middle of my second four-year term on the Board. Being a School Board member is hard work AND one of the most fulfilling opportunities in my life. As I child, I was fortunate to have a Grandmother who demonstrated what it means to be of service to your local community. This is one of the driving values in how I parent my own children. In Englewood Schools, we are fortunate to have a strong, cohesive Board that keeps decision-making focused on what’s best for students and staff.

So many incredible things have happened in the last few years in our school district that I am truly proud of. In less than a years’ time, we will have all new learning spaces in new buildings. It is a point of pride to see the thoughts of the Design Advisory Committees--groups made up of parents, staff and community members--reflected in the final product, and to see those spaces be reflective of the needs of children. Through the Academic Advancement Initiative, we also have commonly defined curriculum and expectations for learning driven by our expert Administrators and Principals. With these changes, we have already seen improvements in graduation rates and students showing up to school ready to learn.

Each day, I learn from my children who learn from Englewood Schools. I believe it is vital to have engaging, curious and robust conversations with our children in order to model how to engage with the world and how to use critical thinking skills in order to wade through an increasingly complex society. To that end, in my final few years on the Board I will strive to increase the engagement of the student voice in meaningful ways.

Thank you for your trust and for allowing Englewood Schools to be part of the community in which your children Belong and Thrive! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of that.
Dr. Bobbie Skaggs - 2019 Principal of the Year
Englewood Schools' Dr. Bobbie Skaggs, longtime principal of  Colorado's Finest High School of Choice , has been recognized with one of the highest honors in Colorado education. The Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE) named her the 2019 High School Principal of the Year!

"Being Principal of the Year is such an amazing honor," said Dr. Skaggs. "Especially in a state where educators are innovative, resourceful and inspiring. I feel humbled, anxious, and overwhelmingly grateful."

Dr. Skaggs has cultivated a distinct culture at Colorado's Finest. "The Colorado's Finest community is a family. The concept of family permeates our school culture and creates an environment where people are valued, supported, and held accountable. The notion of nurturing relationships has been a core value for me professionally and personally," she said.

Students at Colorado's Finest come looking for a fresh start and a second chance at high school. Dr. Skaggs finds inspiration from these students."My greatest inspiration is the students in my school. Those students who have been disengaged from education for various reasons and who have often overcome challenging obstacles that many adults would struggle to overcome; and yet, those same students are willing to give learning one more chance."

What makes a great leader? According to Dr. Skaggs it is to act in service to those you are leading. She explains, "A leader must be able to visualize the potential in people, inspire people to pursue that potential, and communicate the possibilities of a new reality."

Congratulations, Dr. Skaggs!

Good News from Our Schools
Future Fairs
Both Englewood High School and Colorado's Finest High School of Choice held Future Fairs for students in April. These fairs gave students an opportunity to prepare for life after high school by visiting with potential colleges, employers, military branches and apprenticeships. Students at Colorado's Finest practiced their interview skills through mock interviews with Englewood Schools administrators, a former Englewood Mayor and an Englewood Schools Board Member!
Charles Hay Science Fair
On April 30, Charles Hay held its Family Science Fair and ALP showcase. Students were able to enter the fair with a family project, a group project or an independent project. The project ideas this year were fantastic, and really showed a renewed interest in the sciences (and STEM!)
EHS Students Present to physics Nobel laureate
Students in honors physics and AP chemistry represented Englewood High School in a science poster symposium at CU Boulder. The poster symposium was organized by Partnerships for Informal Science Education in the Community, a program at CU that connects high school students with research labs at CU Boulder to engage students in real scientific practices. Eric Cornell, a Nobel laureate in physics, attended the symposium and spoke with Englewood students about their projects.
Clayton Arts Alive Week
This week, Clayton is holding the first Arts Alive week in their new building! The week is always a wonderful showcase of student art and performances. During this week each year, the building is transformed with student artwork displayed everywhere it can fit. This year, the amazing art, combined with the light and space in the new building, is incredible! Great job to everyone at Clayton, especially Mary Lynn Baird and her team.
