A Note from Board Member Sharon Scheminske
|
|
My name is Sharon Scheminske and I am just finishing my four year term on the Englewood Schools Board of Education. As I reach the end of my term, I think about how I decided to become a Board member. When my daughter started attending Englewood Schools in kindergarten, I knew I wanted to be involved in her education. I quickly learned that volunteering in the classroom and on the school accountability committee helped me support her learning as I gained knowledge about her experiences. Once I was comfortable supporting her, I looked to affect all students in Englewood by joining the District Accountability Committee. The next step in my quest to help all kids was to run for a seat on the Board of Education.
During my time as an elected official, the Board has worked closely with the community to build beautiful new learning environments for our preschool and elementary school students. The Board is also supporting our superintendent in implementing an aggressive Academic Advancement Initiative (AAI). The combination of these two initiatives has helped Englewood students make significant academic strides over the past two years. Now, the construction of our primary schools is almost complete, and the AAI work is ongoing as teachers are continuing to focus on educating students with increasing rigor and challenge. Although there is still much work to be done, data shows that the focused methods our schools are using to help kids learn are extremely effective. I look forward to watching the academic progress continue to unfold at a rapid pace.
As I reflect further on my time as a Board member serving Englewood Schools, I realize what a tremendous impact our school system has on the surrounding community. Englewood Schools offers an engaging atmosphere where all community members are welcome. Something that makes the Englewood School District special is the great diversity in value systems across the community. One of the reasons my family has called Englewood home for the past 21 years is that this values-based diversity offers us the opportunity to learn and grow from our neighbors who view the world in many ways. It is fascinating, challenging, and fulfilling to live in a community of thinkers and doers that accept and support each other even though we all hold different values. Promoting this type of social learning in addition to academic learning is of deep importance to our district, and I am proud that Englewood Schools offers all types of learning opportunities to our youngest and oldest community members. I expect that the passion and dedication our Englewood community pours into its schools will have a profound effect on students as they grow up, launch their adult lives, and give back to the community that they know and love. What a great benefit to Englewood as a whole!

Tips for Successful Parent-Teacher Conferences
|
|
Parent-teacher conferences are an opportunity to connect with your child's teacher(s) and partner with them to ensure your student is as successful as possible.
Some of the tips include:
- Make sure you attend the conference. You are a crucial part of your child's education.
- Be on time. Teachers have many conferences and need to stay on schedule.
- Be prepared. Make sure you know about your child's progress so you start on the same page.
- Bring questions. Think about what you want to ask in advance so you don't walk away from the conference with unanswered questions.

How to Find the Right Book for Your Student
|
|
Are you trying to help your student find that “just right” book that will both engage them and help them grow as a reader? One measure Englewood Schools uses to match students with appropriate reading texts is a Lexile score or level. A Lexile score is
the numeric representation of an individual's reading ability or a text's readability (or difficulty).
If you are not sure of your student’s Lexile level, make sure to ask your child's teacher. Lexile levels also correspond to grade levels (see chart below). Because Lexiles
can be applied to a person’s reading ability or a book’s readability, you can either search for books with a certain Lexile, or using the title, find out that book’s specific Lexile measurement.

A quick reference for Lexile levels is below. Please remember, readers have a range within Lexile scores. The right-hand column contains Lexile ranges that are considered on track to be college ready.

Free College Application Day
|
|
Tuesday, October 15 is Colorado Free College Application Day. Last year, Colorado students submitted nearly 23,000 admissions applications to technical schools, community colleges and universities during the first Colorado Free Application Day. This year, students have another opportunity to submit college applications for free.

Dinger Visits Bishop
Dinger, the Colorado Rockies mascot, paid a visit to Bishop Elementary for a school rally on Thursday, September 26. In the assembly, the students learned to stay in school, refuse drugs, get involved and show respect. The students had a great time at the assembly and were so excited to meet Dinger!

EHS Tradition Returns

Finest History
At the October 1, 2019, Board of Education meeting, the Board recognized Maurice DeShazer. In 1980, Mr. DeShazer proposed the district offer an alternative high school and was the school's first principal. Mr. DeShazer's goal was to create a place where students who normally would drop out of high school due to life challenges or other extenuating circumstances could thrive, graduate and go on to college. Since then, Colorado's Finest High School of Choice has served over 12,000 students with a family-like atmosphere and opportunity to succeed.
