UTO social justice prize
goes to film on bullying
St. Anthony's Episcopal Church in Winder is the first recipient of the John Hines Social Justice Award given by the Episcopal Church's United Thank Offering, known worldwide as UTO. The award is a $34,280 grant to complete a film devoted to anti-bullying education. Called "Five Smooth Stones," the film was directed by the parish's senior warden, George Wentworth, who inspired members of the congregation to join him in producing the film, which needs a boost for marketing and distribution. more

Connecting takes a holiday next week
Connecting will not be published next week but will return July 10. Have a Happy 4th! LGBT Ministry listening sessions continue
A listening session on the church's mission to and with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people is planned at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at All Saints', Atlanta. A task force called for last fall by Bishop Wright is conducting the meetings and encourages anyone to respond to four questions to assist its work. more

+ The Rev. Mary Demmler of Toccoa has been named dean of the Northeast Georgia Convocation by Bishop Rob Wright. Demmler is rector of St. Matthias', Toccoa. For a list of the member parishes and all convocations, click here. + Brad Hughley, organist and choir director at St. Bartholomew's, Atlanta, for more than decade, has been called to serve as associate organist and choir director for St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Indianapolis. Hughley has not only developed an outstanding music program for the parish but has contributed significantly to the diocesan music scene. His last Sunday at St. Bart's is July 21. |

Order plans Renewal of Vows Service at Our Saviour
A Service for the Renewal of Vows for the Order of St. Anthony the Great will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at Church of Our Saviour, Atlanta. Bishop Dorsey Henderson, retired bishop of Upper South Carolina and bishop visitor to the order, will be receiving vows and officiating. All are welcome.
Taiz� service planned Sunday in Lawrenceville
St. Edward's Episcopal Church in Lawrenceville will host a non-traditional Taiz� service at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 30, incorporating newly composed meditative songs as well as the familiar standards. Gather around the altar for a time of silence and communal song. A reception with light hors d'oeuvres will follow the service. All are welcome.

+ Mentor training for Education for Ministry will be offered Aug. 15-17 and again Aug. 22-24 at the Cathedral of St. Philip's Lanier House. Cost is $175 per person; participants must acquire their own lodging. Both basic discernment and in-service training for current mentors will be offered. Material from a "re-visioning" of the EfM program will be included. The theme is "Transitions in a Changing World." SPOTLIGHT: Gainesville pilgrims @ the Capitol
Rite 13 pilgrims from Grace Church, Gainesville, and their leaders visited Washington, D.C., last month. They visited the Smithsonian Air and Space and Holocaust museums and the National Gallery of Art, the U.S. Capitol, the World War II and Lincoln memorials, and the Washington Monument. Highlights of the trip were a tour of Washington National Cathedral after spending some reflective time in the Bishop's Garden there, as well as attending Eucharist at St. John's Church, Lafayette Square. Author to speak on 'Finding Your Monastic Heart'
Author, retreat leader and Benedictine Sister Macrina Wiederkehr will talk about "Finding Your Monastic Heart: A Way to God" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at the Cathedral of St. Philip. The program is free of charge and sponsored by the Cathedral Book Store. Reservations are required though, so write or call the bookstore, 404-237-7582.

Cathedral hosts concert for Summer Organ Festival
Dr. Jack Mitchener will perform at 7:30 tonight (6/26) at the Cathedral of St. Philip as part of the Atlanta Summer Organ Festival. Mitchener, a world-renowned performer and organist at Mercer University and Christ Church, Macon. Sponsored by Friends of Cathedral Music; $15 donation the door. Other concerts are scheduled as the series continues.

Fayetteville church hosts bluegrass concert June 30
A concert of folk and bluegrass music is planned at noon Sunday, June 30, in the gazebo at Church of the Nativity, Fayetteville. David Ellis, who plays guitar, banjo and dobro, and Melissa Callender will perform. It is a fund-raiser with a free-will offering. All are welcome.

Pilgrimage planned to Israel, Jordan
