    News You Can Use
Summer 2012

Can you believe that it's almost summer?  Amazing.

For many of us summer means vacations, time at the pool, summer camp for the kids, or just some relaxing time around the house.

Chances are you are going to get the camera out too, so this issue will "focus" on some tips to make your summer photography memories that much better.

Few things to keep in mind when using your camera this summer:
  • Have extra memory cards with you - do NOT delete images on a card while the card is in the camera.  Cards are cheap - have plenty.
  • If you are changing lenses, avoid changing on the beach, on the trail, by the waterfall, the pool or wherever sand, moisture and dust are easily picked up.
  • Try to avoid outdoor shots in the middle of the day - you will see much more dramatic and pleasing light earlier in the morning, or late afternoon.
  • Shoot with the sun behind your subjects to avoid squinting - might need to flash-fill to avoid your subject being too dark, but it will be worth it if you can see your subject's eyes actually open!
  • Make sure you have extra batteries, or make sure your battery is charged at the beginning of each day.
  • Camera strap - use it - most cameras these days do not do well after plummeting to the ground.  Gravity works.

Technology Tips

When your Computer Crashes, Cory Comes Dashing!
Okay, so you have taken alot of very cool pics, now you need to download them and keep them safe.

Here's some tips from Cory Jones of Need Computer Help, one of Houston's most trusted technology advisers:

In todays digital age backing up your data is something that is often overlooked by most computer users.  As a professional and a technology expert I can attest to this first hand.  I can't count the number of situations where my client's family computer has crashed and all their pictures have been lost.  It is never fun to deliver bad news like this.

It is very important and affordable to have a worry free backup system.  One of the easiest ways you can do this is sign up with a service like Carbonite.  Once you sign up, you download the program and it automatically searches your computers hard drive for pictures, music and documents.

Carbonite also runs in the background and backs your computers information up on a scheduled basis.  Plans start at $59 for the year with unlimited storage.  The piece of mind you will have from knowing your files are backed up is priceless.

External Hard drives also offer another back-up system for your images. There are alot of them on the market, but I know Eric Kleiman Photography is pleased with their Western Digital Elements & Western Digital Passport external drives.
