Lester Lindow
"Remembering Pearl Harbor"

Wednesday, November 2, 2016 -
No Host Bar starts at 6:00 p.m.
Dinner starts at 7.p.m.

Lester "Les" Lindow had planned to go surfing off Waikiki the morning of December 7, 1941.  "About that time an airplane came over with a big red ball on the side of it," Lindow said. "I still remember that."

Just 19-years-old then, Les raced over to his battle station on the USS Maryland.  "I was a trainer on a 16-inch battery so you're down in a hole, you don't know what's going on but we still remember the rumble and it turned out to be the Arizona blowing up," he said.

On a typical day, Lindow worked in Honolulu as a baker but that December morning was anything but typical.  The Japanese attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, killing more than 2,400 people. America then entered into World War II.

"I seen a lot of my shipmates.  I helped pull them out of the water that didn't make it," Lindow said. "It's quite a memory."

At 94 years-old, Lindow is one of few remaining Pearl Harbor survivors.

"I'm getting too damn old, that's my problem," Lindow jokes. "You know, there's one thing about getting old... Getting old." However, his age isn't slowing him down one bit. He's as excited as he was 75 years ago as he will be heading to Pearl Harbor for the 75th Anniversary ceremony, compliments of a gift from the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Atascadero.

Make sure you have signed up on line or have a current reservation. Hope to see you there!  More information about Lester Lindow and the dinner event

Dinner is catered and open to the public ($17/person), reservations are required prior to 6 p.m., Monday prior to dinner, either on-line or call 805 296-1935

Grizzley Youth Academy help beautify the grounds at EWM

Members of 3rd Platoon Top Dogs

Thanks to a donation from Todd Peterson & Lowe's, 127 bags of garden mulch was donated to Estrella Warbird Museum.  SFC Benjamin Federick led the 3rd Platoon Top Dogs of the Grizzley Academy in spreading the mulch and sprucing up the grounds surrounding the main buildings.  More pictures can be found by clicking on the above picture.

Thank you very much to the myriad of people who helped with the planning and implementation of this event. It was something new for the museum and overall, people seemed to love the idea. We had over 150 paid "swap" vendors hawking everything from rusted piston rods to souped up military vehicles with temperatures above 100! It was also a learning experience for us. We learned what worked and what didn't work, copious notes were taken for careful review at next year's planning sessions. It was a hot day (102 degrees) but cool tempers and attitudes prevailed through out the event. A very special thank you goes out to the 101 Garage and the Woodland Auto Display staff for their contributions to making the event memoriable and an opportunity for us to reach out further into our local (and expanded) communities. It is always an exciting experience to hear a visitor say, "Wow! This is so cool! I never knew this place existed!"
