November Dinner
Special Guest Speaker

Jan Johnson
Research & Development Engineerf
Pilot

Wednesday, November 7, 2018
No Host Bar starts at 6:00 p.m.
Dinner starts at 7.p.m.

Jan Johnson was first bitten by the aviation bug in the mid-1990s, when she was hired as a flight attendant for Reno Air, based in San Jose. Although serving beverages at FL330 can be fun, Jan dreamed of someday flying the airplane herself. She went back into engineering after her short 'career' at Reno Air, and is currently employed as an research and development engineer at a Silicon Valley medical device company.

In early 2009, a casual conversation with a colleague at work led to Jan's first discovery flight in a 1980 Piper Warrior at Palo Alto Airport. While working full-time as an engineer, Jan dedicated four to five hours per week to flying and every spare minute was spent studying. Jan received her Private Pilot certification later that year and immediately transitioned into tailwheel airplanes.

A few of the planes Jan has flown: Citabria 7ECA, 7KCAB, 7GCAA; Piper Warrior, Lance; Cessna 170, 172, 177, 182, 195, 305 (L-19); and Stinson L-5.
Jan's first airplane was a 1952 Cessna LC-126C - the military version of a 195 Businessliner. She flew it to Oshkosh three years in a row and displayed it in Warbirds and Vintage. In 2016, it went to a new owner in New York. A chance meeting that same year led to Jan's acquisition of a 1945 Vultee Stinson L-5/G ambulance, which had been recovered from a Nevada boneyard in 1987 and completely restored by Frank Huffman in Santa Clara, California. Frank's dream was to fly his L-5 to Oshkosh for the annual EAA convention, but never managed to make the trip. He passed away in December 2016.

More information on Jan Johnson  can be found here .

Dinner is catered and open to the public ($20/person), reservations are  required prior to 6 p.m., Monday  prior to dinner , either  On-line HERE  or  call  805 296-1935.

High School Aviation Club Started

Interest in aviation many times starts at an early age. This editor took his first flight when his family took advantage of a "penny a pound" introductory flight. My cost was .67 cents, but worth every penny.

We are happy to announce that Brad Eaton has taken the initiative to work with Paso Robles, Templeton and Atascadero high schools in setting up a viable aviation club and already has at least 40 new members!  Some will be taking part in the Veteran's Day event flyovers at Morro Bay and Hearst Castle (among other places), on board the C-47D Betsy's Biscuit Bomber! What a trill of a lifetime it will be! The club will be meeting on a regular basis at Estrella Warbirds Museum and getting involved with many of the activities. Scott Stelzle put the word out seeking a few corporate sponsors for the flight to help defray fuel costs.  If you are interested in helping out financially, contact Scott directly 805 610-3310.
Woodland Auto Display Updates

It was announced here last month, and now we can show progress is being made on the foundation for yet another Woodland Auto Display Building.

We love our docents, whether they be in the museum or at the Woodland Auto Display.  Below is WAD docent Lee Osborn with his 1951 MG-TD. You will find plenty of knowledgeable car enthusiasts to guide you through the rows of cars.

Better yet, if you are interested in sharing some of your knowledge with others and would like to volunteer at the museum, please complete contact us here.

UH-1D Iroquois "Huey" is Down For The Count
Stripped to the bone. Click on picture for more information.

EWM  Restoration Crew has taken on the next project, our Bell UH-1D Huey. The desert sun had begun to take it's toll on this bird, so it was time to come in to roost for the winter while it undergoes a complete restoration.

This battle weary Vietnam veteran helicopter was on the receiving end of ballistics during numerous combat incidents. Restoration costs could possibly exceed $10,000, something to keep in mind when you consider year end giving.  This is also a great opportunity for others to assist the all volunteer restoration crew in returning this Huey to original glory.  A full history of this chopper can be found at this link.
Warbirds Wings & Wheels 11 MegaSwap Meet Coordinator

Do you want to get involved and make a difference? We are looking for a unique individual (or couple) to head up coordination of the MegaSwap Meet at next year's Warbirds Wings & Wheels 11 event in May 2019. We have more space available next year as the grounds for our newly acquired acreage next door is being prepped for additional vehicle and swap meet display area. We  have access to many helpers and existing routines, we  just need a coordinator. The Mega SwapMeet has been widely received and has become an integral part of our annual event.  If you are interested we'd love to work with you, please contact us via this link.
