Last month, two of our staff members, Mary and Laura, wrote about their experiences with Nutragen detoxification program. This month I want to add to that idea by talking about intermittent fasting and autophagy, pronounced awe-tof-a-jee.
The Greek word “auto” means self and the Greek word “phagia” literally means to eat or devour.
Intermittent fasting gives your body a rest from the constant eating, digesting, absorption and utilization of food. What a lot of work the body has to put forth! When you stop putting things in, your body has the chance to clean itself up down to the cellular level. Add a good detoxification program and it gets even better. After all, the definition of wellness is a body composed of cells that are fully sufficient with the good stuff and void of the bad stuff!
Scientists, medical doctors and other professionals are studying this more and more. As I dig deeper into the literature, fasting is nothing new! Hippocrates (c 460 – c370 BC), considered the father of modern medicine, prescribed fasting to his patients. Hippocrates wrote, “To eat when you are sick, is to feed your illness”. The ancient Greek writer and historian Plutarch (cAD46 – c AD 120) wrote, “Instead of using medicine, better fast today”. Ancient Greek thinkers Plato and his student Aristotle were also supporters of fasting. More current authorities include Dr. Jason Fung, a nephrologist (kidney Dr.) from Canada, who is successfully using intermittent fasting for his diabetic patients. Others include Dr. Eric Berg, Dr. Joseph Mercola, and the 2016 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology from Japan, Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi. Thanks to Dr. Ohsumi and others, we now know autophagy allows for the cellular function of degradation and recycling.
The analogy is well described by author Naomi Whittel, who wrote the book,
Glow 15. She describes a kitchen that never gets cleaned up after you cook. Dirty dishes piled in the sink, overflowing garbage cans, the countertops and stove are covered with dirty pots and pans and leftover food. As days go by you can imagine the stink! In fact, your kitchen is so overloaded and covered with “stink” that there is no counter space to make anything including something good like a salad! We need to stop creating a mess and start cleaning up our kitchen! Intermittent fasting and detoxification is like cleaning up your kitchen! It allows autophagy to take place in our cells. Dr Ohsumi showed that autophagy gives our cells the opportunity to clean themselves up so they can rebuild and renew cellular components, the end product being a healthy cell.
How does this relate to chiropractic you ask?
Dr. Spencer and I could give the best miracle adjustment in the world but if your cells are toxic, they cannot respond in a healthy way. In fact, they can’t respond well to anything good you try to do for your body. The kitchen is dirty!
I have a few patients already doing the intermittent fasting and the Nutragen cleanse program. They are reporting great results. If you have questions about how this might work for you, just ask us. Stay tuned. Maybe I will do a talk about this at the office this fall! Fall is a great time of year to “clean our kitchens”!
‘til next time,
