Young Local Hero
Public Safety Academy 6th grader Tamaiah Massot was honored for heroism by her entire school, the Fairfield Police Department, the Fairfield Fire Department, North Bay Medical Center, city officials and even the mayor. A couple months prior, Tamaiah was on her way home from school when she witnessed an face-down, unresponsive three-year-old who had fallen into the pool at her apartment complex. Remembering a YouTube video she had watched the year before, Tamaiah immediately jumped in the pool, pulled the toddler out and administered CPR, resuscitating the child. Her quick thinking and actions, along with her ability to remain calm ultimately saved this child’s life. Although she is a hero in all of our eyes, she remains very humble and did not want any recognition at all for her actions. Tamaiah… we at the Matt Garcia Foundation are so very proud of you.
Gun Buyback Event
The Matt Garcia Foundation will be hosting a Gun Buyback event that will be held on July 9th at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, located at 1735 Enterprise Dr., Bldg. 3 in Fairfield.

We have to STAND and make a difference together. We pray for all those that have lost their loved ones to senseless gun violence. We trust and believe that OUR collective efforts WILL help save lives that could have been lost to more senseless gun violence.

Please consider making a donation to Help this initiative. The intended use of the funds is to purchase gift cards to issue to participants who surrender unwanted firearms. We will be accepting various styles of guns and firearms. Weapons will be turned in anonymously, no questions asked.

Thank you for taking a STAND to “Keep the Dream Alive” with this year's Gun Buyback initiative to help get unwanted guns properly disposed of and prevent them from getting into the hands of criminals.

The horrible truth is that my son, the late Fairfield City Councilman Matt Garcia, was murdered on September 1st, 2008 at the young age of twenty-two, at the hands of a criminal that had illegally purchased a gun at a garage sale.

Additional collaborative partners in this year's initiative are as follows: the City of Fairfield, the Fairfield Police Department and Faith Partners and Community.

With our combined efforts in “Supporting our Youth” and “Helping to Stop Crime,” we have a greater opportunity to “Strengthen our Communities” for generations to come.

Sincerely,
Teresa Courtemanche

Harry Potter Birthday Celebration
Join The Matt Garcia Foundation on July 31, 2022 from 11am till 3pm in celebrating Harry Potter's Birthday with Fairfield Downtown Businesses organized by Legendary Letters.

Come celebrate the birthday of the boy who lived with us in downtown Fairfield! You will start at Legendary Letters with a sorting ceremony and a Charms lesson. Then you will receive a map with all the participating businesses and a card for you to get stamped at each one. You will turn the card in at the end to be entered into a drawing for fun prizes! See the discussion for updates on the participating businesses and the activities they will host. So far Slime World, Pizza Twist, Digital Stitchz, Three Restaurant, Vintique Marketplace, the Downtown Theatre, the Matt Garcia Foundation, the Fairfield Civic Center Library, Michaels Electronic Services, CruiseOne, and Rosanna's have all joined.

There is a free parking lot at the corner of Webster & Kentucky Streets and another off the alley behind it. It may be very hot that day so we don't recommend costumes. Wear comfortable shoes to walk all of downtown as well as a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. It's going to be wicked! Until then, don't let the muggles get you down.

*This is a free event, but space is limited. You may want to arrive before 1pm to make sure supplies don't run out early.

Look forward in seeing you all there!

Safety Tips During Hot Weather
Body overheating (hyperthermia) can happen without warning. In extreme heat, evaporation is slowed, and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. Death can occur if proper measures aren’t taken to prevent overheating.

Remember these important tips to follow in extreme heat conditions:
  • Find air conditioning or cooler shaded areas
  • Avoid strenuous activities
  • Watch for heat illness
  • Wear light clothing
  • Check on family members and neighbors
  • Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water (avoid sugary drinks, caffeine and alcohol)
  • Never leave people or pets in a closed car and avoid walking pets when the pavement is hot

Some Inspiring Words
man_woman_hiking_help.jpg
“It's the action, not the fruit of the action, that's important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there'll be any fruit. But that doesn't mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result”. -Mahatma Ghandi
