May chapter meeting: Strategies to pay for college
Tuesday, May 21, at 2:30 p.m.
As another school year wraps up and summer vacation approaches, many families are preparing to visit colleges. Finding the right college is one thing – paying for that college is a whole other challenge. How can we best help our clients navigate the process?

In this month’s chapter meeting, Cozy Wittman of Inside College Track will discuss the latest strategies to pay for college and innovative, strategic uses of student loans. In addition to these tactics, Wittman will share three case studies where attendees can apply their new knowledge.

Pro Bono Spotlight: Nicole Boor

In this new recurring spotlight, volunteers with the FPA of MN Pro Bono Committee share the work they are doing in the community. This month, Nicole Boor, CFP®, of Accredited Investors, describes her volunteer experience with a local nonprofit.
As a CFP® professional in the early stages of my career, I first became interested in pro bono work because it gave me the opportunity to take the lead on client engagements and hone my skills. Over the years, it's helped me expand my network of financial planners and community leaders. But most importantly, it feels great to give back to my community and make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Recently, I have been fortunate enough to volunteer with Build Wealth, MN, Inc. as a pro bono financial planner in partnership with this chapter. Build Wealth works with low to moderate-income families to improve financial literacy, reduce debt and build generational wealth in under-served communities. As a volunteer, I met one-on-one with families that had already established credit and purchased homes and were ready to take the next steps in building their wealth. We covered topics like saving, investing, social security, budgeting, basic estate planning and more.

The most exciting part about this work was meeting with program participants who had already made significant strides in their financial lives and were eager to go further. In our brief time together, we had meaningful conversations about their lives and finances, and I was able to provide them with tangible next steps. I gained clearer insight into what our local communities are facing and saw more clearly how those with the least access to professional financial advice often are the ones who could benefit the most from it.
