The world has been shaken by the killing of George Floyd. This tragic event hits particularly close to home for us since it happened here in Minnesota. Our hearts go out to George Floyd, his grieving family and the surrounding community.
We believe seeking out and advocating for diversity and inclusion is an important way to break through social injustice barriers – not only in our profession but across all facets of our society. This tragedy is a reminder of the work ahead.
On a national level, FPA is implementing a multi-year plan to create a more supportive, inclusive community. There are several upcoming
virtual listening sessions you can attend, and FPA is committing to working more closely with diverse leaders, members and allies.
Here at the FPA MN, we are gauging interest in creating a local Diversity and Inclusion Committee. If you are passionate about building a more diverse chapter and financial planning industry, we encourage you to join a task force to help us explore what role this committee could have. Please contact
[email protected] to share ideas or get involved with the task force.

One of our annual conference's most popular sessions is the "Great Economic Debate," where experts gather to provide their analyses and interpretations for the current state of our economy.

Making an impact: The Financial Cancer Care program
|
Our chapter is proud to support the
Financial Cancer Care program. Led by the
Angel Foundation, this program provides cancer patients and their caregivers with financial planning and education to help mitigate the financial risks associated with treatment. The need for this program has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many patients’ finances have become even more overwhelming.
Since the Financial Cancer Care program launched this winter, several FPA MN members have gotten involved. Here’s a look at the program’s progress so far:
- More than 20 patients have been referred to the program
- More than 20 financial planners have been trained
- Nearly ten patients have been matched with a financial planner
We will continue to need more pro bono financial planners as patients continue to apply. If you are an interested CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, please contact Alli Midwinter at the Angel Foundation at
[email protected] or 612-627-9000 ext. 509 to learn more.

Here at FPA MN, we provide a variety of accessible opportunities for members to engage with fellow financial planning professionals. One of the ways we deliver on this goal is through our many committee options.
From the Career Development and Pro Bono committees to the Professional Issues and Membership committees, each group is made up by volunteer members. Committees are driven by their specialized missions and support the robust programming that makes our association a leader in the financial planning industry.
