News from FPA of Minnesota

Your Partner in Planning

January 3, 2023

Message from our 2023 Board President Bruce Lorenz

Happy 2023!

It’s a privilege to join you as a member of the FPA MN. You make us who we are, and your contributions and ongoing membership matter. I’m honored to be part of the leadership team – a group that exists to bring value and service to all our members, partners and community.

The success of FPA MN is due to the tireless efforts of our past board members, committees and volunteers. I'm especially thankful for the work of our past presidents. 2021 President Ryan Antkowiak leaves the board this year, and we'll miss his energy and input. However, Ryan will continue to be active and play an integral part in the processes of our chapter. 2022 President Pete Snow led us through a very successful year as programming came to a new venue. Throughout many discussions, he always kept us moving forward. I'm grateful that Pete will continue to be on our board in 2023.

As a state chapter, our members are part of a national organization that aims to elevate our profession. Now, more than ever, we are asked to share our skills as we transform lives through the power of financial planning. Our impact is far-reaching.

Please consider offering your talents to our organization and community. In addition to the numerous nonprofit organizations requesting help, FPA MN's committees benefit by involving more members. From engaging in one-time projects to involvement throughout the year, many participation options exist.

You are needed!

Please reach out to any of the board members with your ideas on making our chapter an even better place for tomorrow. I can be contacted at [email protected].

Cheers to a fantastic new year!

Advocate for financial education: Involvement through the Literacy Coalition of Minnesota

FPA MN is excited to support an important initiative to give more Minnesota students access to personal finance course offerings.

A group of community leaders, financial service professionals, and the Minnesota Council on Economic Education (MCEE) established the Financial Literacy Coalition of Minnesota (FLCM) to support a state-wide financial education initiative. In this upcoming legislative session, the coalition plans to submit a bill requiring a semester-equivalent personal finance course for high school graduation.

Seventeen states have already passed this graduation standard, and only a small percentage of Minnesota school districts have this requirement.

We know collaboration is key to strengthening youth financial literacy. If you are interested in getting involved with the FLCM, please complete this MCEE-hosted survey.

Opportunities for involvement include regular updates, advocacy for legislation, monetary support, and assisting with implementing a personal finance curriculum. All information you provide will be kept confidential and used solely for contacting you regarding this initiative and other updates from MCEE.

CFP® volunteers: Prepare + Prosper and Asian Women United Minnesota need your help

Prepare + Prosper

Are you looking for a way to give back to your community this winter? Prepare + Prosper (P+P) is recruiting CFP® volunteers for the 2023 tax season. P+P is a nonprofit focusing on financial wellness and empowerment by offering free tax preparation, financial services and banking products.

CFP® volunteers receive referrals from P+P’s tax clinics and schedule one-to-one meetings (virtual or phone call) with P+P customers to provide individualized financial guidance. Volunteers are trained in the economic challenges P+P populations tend to face to communicate with equity and respect. Volunteers will gain valuable experience working with diverse communities.

Training and volunteer work are entirely virtual! The deadline for signing up is Jan. 16, and training begins two days later.
