Member Insights: A message from Janet Stanzak
The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted our lives and professions. But as Janet Stanzak, a long-time member of our chapter and president at
Financial Empowerment
describes in this month’s feature article, the value of financial planning is more visible now than ever.
|
In a matter of just a few months, every aspect of our lives has been impacted by COVID-19. Across the country, people are understandably rattled. Beyond worrying about the health of themselves and loved ones, they are unsure about their finances and anxious about their jobs, savings and plans for retirement. You’ve likely encountered quite a few people who are tempted to make irrational financial decisions that could hurt them in the long run.
Our profession is more vital today than ever. Who else do people talk to about life and money? It’s you, their trusted advisor. It’s our expertise and sound advice that helps guide clients through their emotions, encouraging them to embrace patience and focus on long-term goals. As the Vanguard white paper on an advisor’s alpha notes, we add 150 basis points to return through our behavioral coaching. It is now, in these times, that we are needed the most. We bring calm to the daily noise of deep recession, volatile markets, and a highly contagious virus.

You may have noticed that our chapter has a new look!
In late May, FPA National and its chapters rolled out a new streamlined logo. FPA National also launched a new brand promise to highlight the benefits we provide to our clients: "Change Tomorrows."
We recommend you check out
FPA National's revamped website, which is now easier for members to access and offers many exclusive resources. This includes unrestricted access to the Journal of Financial Planning's new digital edition, as well as live and on-demand webinars, interactive learning content, and FPA research.

ASCEND Conference speaker spotlight: Cam Marston
Leading up to our
ASCEND Conference
(formerly known as FPA of Minnesota Symposium) on November 2-3, we are highlighting a new speaker each month.
Cam Marston
Join us at this year’s ASCEND Conference to hear from
Cam Marston, an acclaimed author, columnist, lecturer, and the leading expert on the impact of the generational change and its effect on the workplace and market.
Generational biases and preferences can unwittingly separate financial service professionals from their clients. Adjusting your language, communications channels and meeting habits to your client’s generation can help you best communicate your value and maintain important relationships.
During his presentation, Marston will describe each of the pertinent generations in today’s marketplace and how to best understand and communicate with each of them. The presentation will also explore the relationship between affluent Baby Boomers and their Millennial children and how advisors can begin to proactively work with the Millennials so they can be prepared for and benefit from the ongoing transfer of wealth from parents to children.
