Hurricane Irma evacuees
Many of you found your phones buzzing yesterday with calls from Florida residents looking for lodging during Hurricane Irma. Usually after Labor Day, there is a short reprieve before the Fall season, so these guests are somewhat unexpected -- but remember they are not coming here by choice -- they aren't on vacation. They are under a great deal of stress and fear about what is to come. So let's open our hearts and give them the best Fannin County welcome.

City of Blue Ridge Candidate Forum
The Chamber's Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Manda Gwatney, is planning a City of Blue Ridge Candidate Forum on September 28 at the Fannin High School Performing Arts Center, from 6 to 9 p.m. All six of the Blue Ridge City Council Seats are up for election in early November.
Candidates are as follows:
Mayor - Donna Whitener, incumbent, vs Brendon Doyle
Post 1 - Harold Herndon, incumbent, vs Jane Whaley
Post 2 - Rhonda Thomas, incumbent, vs Angelena Powell
Post 3 - Angie Arp, incumbent, vs Kenneth Gaddis
Post 4 - (no incumbent) Robbie Cornelius vs Mike Jacobs
Post 5 - (no incumbent) Nathan Fitts vs David Stuart

Chamber Group Visits Western Carolina
A group of 20 Chamber Board Members and local leaders participated in the Chamber's first Community Visit to Asheville, Hendersonville, Sylva and Dillsboro, N.C. The group met with local officials in each community to discuss tourism, economic and community development.
Participants included Board Members Paul Gribble, Shannen Oyster, Joe Foster, Richard York, C.J. and Heather Stam, Lisa and Ed Vest. Others were Christie Arp, Quinn Gudakunst, Rob Kaser, Wanda Dostall, Cesar Martinez, Nichole Potzauf, John and Suzie Soave, David and Teresa Gribble, Jan Hackett and Jode Mull.

Ambassador Spotlight
Mark Belongie is this month's Ambassador Spotlight. He has been a Chamber Ambassador for two years and was named 2016 Ambassador of the Year. Mark has been Associate Partner with Southern Financial Consultants since 2014. He served as this year's Chairman of Leadership Fannin. He is also an active member of the Lake Blue Ridge Civic Assn, and Blue Ridge Trout Unltd.
