First 5 Santa Cruz County, which manages the Triple P — Positive Parenting Program, is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Positive Parenting Awareness Month, as proclaimed by the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. Positive Parenting Awareness Month highlights the importance for parents and caregivers to develop warm, nurturing relationships with their children and teens and become more confident as parents.
To celebrate Positive Parenting Awareness Month, Triple P is collaborating with Watsonville Public Library to introduce StoryWalk®. Families can participate in StoryWalk®, a fun, educational activity that places bilingual pages from the children’s storybook “Deep Breaths” around the library. During Positive Parenting Awareness Month in January 2022, Triple P is also offering free virtual parenting classes and courses on a variety of topics in English and Spanish.
“Positive Parenting Awareness Month is an opportunity for Triple P to showcase our variety of classes, events and seminars for parents,” said David Brody, Executive Director of First 5 Santa Cruz County. “We are particularly excited to work with Watsonville Public Library to present StoryWalk®. This family activity builds children’s interest in reading and provides quality time for families while teaching stress-busting techniques for adults and children.”
Triple P virtual classes in January include topics such as “Encouraging Your Child’s Self-Esteem” and “The Power of Positive Parenting”. Classes are offered in Spanish and English and are available to all families in Santa Cruz County.
The 2022 proclamation also acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis and racial injustices have exacerbated economic insecurity, mental health challenges, domestic violence, discrimination, and other trauma experienced by many families – particularly Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian and other families of color that already experience inequities rooted in structural racism.
Since 2010, over 40,000 diverse parents and children in Santa Cruz County have benefitted from Triple P classes, workshops, resources and support.
Triple P offers free virtual parenting classes and courses on a variety of topics in English and Spanish. Classes are open to all Santa Cruz County families.
