Happy New Year! 2013 in Review...

As we look forward to all of the resolutions, adventures, and challenges in 2014, we wanted to take a look back at some of the most influential events, products, and changes at Fleet Feet Sports in the year 2013.

The most influencing event of 2013 - the bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. At first, shaken to the core, many of us felt we could never be safe again. Those responsible did not know that runners are tough and always band together. Boston Strong galvanized the running community across the world. Here in our Buffalo running community, many of our friends and customers were there and their experiences were difficult - but all were safe which was the most important thing.

The Color Run came to Buffalo in August drawing 10,000 participants to the waterfront to run, run/walk or walk a 5K - getting tie-dyed along the way. Some may think the proliferation of events like this is hurting the sport of running. It is instead bringing new runners to the roads - offering a non-intimidating introduction to the sport we all love.

The Biggest Loser 5K and Half Marathon commits to an event in Buffalo in August 2014. This one will be big!  A 5K, a half marathon, and a kids race in downtown - a great event with excellent perks.
The sad part for us - the Fleet Feet 15K-Run into Buffalo will no longer be run. The BLRW will replace the 15K while still benefiting an initiative so special for me and Dan - Shoes on Students (SOS) - our non-profit that provides brand new running shoes for high school cross-country and track athletes of need.  Close to 2,000 pairs distributed to date with many more in the years to come.

2013 brought some very interesting new products to the market - new technology to make your run the best.  New Balance introduced the Hi-Viz Beacon Jacket - highly reflective and also glow in the dark. It works and provides additional visibility in the darkest conditions (like on my early morning runs in Forest Lawn Cemetery). Adidas rocked the footwear market with the introduction of the Energy Boost shoe in February. Crafted from TPU that provides incredible cushioning and the highest energy return per step of any midsole on the market. And Brooks introduced a "second skin" product. Their Equilibrium Base Layer keeps you warm in the coldest conditions - a mesh layer that you would think - how does it keep you warm?  The mesh traps the warm air generated during your run and forms an insulating barrier.

Mosaic LogoAnd changes at Fleet Feet Sports too in 2013.  May into June at Fleet Feet was to say the least - a bit chaotic. Our floor of 5+ years was just looking worn out and dull. So, we brought in Blair - a talented floor artist. He took the Fleet Feet Sports mosaic logo and transformed our floor in a riot of color and shine.  If you have not been to the store since Spring, it is worth the trip just to see our shiny new floor.

Our staff is the best in the industry - we have the smartest and most committed young people on staff. Melina, our Distance Coach, was promoted in 2013 to Assistant Store Manager. A great addition to our management team!  We are sadly losing a couple great Fleeters - all moving on to big things. Both Lesley and Leah have completed their degrees at UB and Canisius and are moving on to new challenges with clinical rotations and jobs in their field of study. Jimmy, our Inventory Manager and Distance Coach, is also heading off to a new career in just a couple weeks. Jimmy will be joining the team at Fleet Feet Inc in Carrboro, NC. Jimmy met the team at Inc and they were so impressed that they offered him a job. We are sorry to lose him while also thrilled that his dream of a career in the running industry is happening. Good luck in 2014 to all!

We look forward to 2014 - inspiring people to move and to meet their fitness goals! We thank all of you for letting us do this each and every day!

Happy New Year from Alice and Dan and the Fleet Feet Sports Buffalo Team!

Gift Cards Galore!
There are tons of gift cards floating around out there this holiday season. If you were lucky enough to snag one you may be wondering what to get with it. Allow me to throw some fun ideas your way of things you may want.

Winter training shoes - If you, like myself, have a marathon on the agenda for 2014, then you are going to be spending some quality time out there in the snow. Goretex shoes are a must. No one enjoys stepping in a puddle of slush only to have your feet be soaked for the next 5 miles. Really dampens your spirit...(hahaha) Anyway, both Brooks and Nike have waterproof selections to give you comfortable miles through the wet half of the year. While you are at it, you may want to grab a pair of Due North Traction Aids too. As someone who spent an entire day running 50 miles in Lockport last January, take my advice when I tell you that these Traction Aids are lifesavers in the snow and ice.

New running watch - So you have seen the new Garmin 220 and 620 and have been envying your buddy who got one for Christmas. Well if someone was nice enough to give you a gift card then why not treat yourself? Even if you end up paying for half it is still a great deal! We even have some Garmin 610s that are on sale. Why not pick one up while you have some "free money" to spare.

A pair of Superfeet dress fits
-
Think of all the events you have coming up this year. New Year's Eve parties, holiday parties that are a little late, Valentine's Day dinners, spring dinner parties, weddings galore (I have six this year including my own!), Thanksgiving and Christmas next year, World's Largest Disco, and any formal events. Even if you only wear heels or dress shoes a couple of times a year you owe it to yourself to pick up a pair of dress fits. They last for years and make the dress shoes bearable for both men and women, even if you only wear them for 6 hours every other month.

Think of this from the American Osteopathic Association: "when you wear high heels - shoes with a heel two inches or higher - your foot slides forward in your shoe, forcing the toes into the unnatural shape of the shoe and redistributing your weight incorrectly. The increased weight on your toes causes your body to tilt forward, and to compensate, you lean backwards and overarch your back, creating a posture that can strain your knees, hips, and lower back. The change to the position of your spine puts pressure on nerves in the back and can cause sciatica, a condition where nerves become trapped, triggering pain and numbness as far down as the feet."
By adding Superfeet to the heals you can help relieve pressure under the forefoot by redistributing your weight inside the shoe. With a plush microsuede top, high-density foam layer, and supportive shape, they combine Superfeet's best orthotic innovations and biomechanical designs to deliver a scandalous level of comfort for women's heels.
Now doesn't that just sound like heaven?

Still need help picking out some gift card goodies? Ask a staff member to make some recommendations. We are full of great ideas!

Fleet Feet Sports Buffalo is thrilled to announce that The Biggest Loser Half Marathon/5K is coming to Buffalo! Dan has been working with the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission to make this happen for our community.

The race will be run on Sunday 8/31/14 and will bring in runners from across the area as well as former contestants. The Biggest Loser Half Marathon/5K will replace the Fleet Feet 15K-Run into Buffalo which has run on Labor Day for 7 years. What will not change is Fleet Feet Sports commitment to our community and Shoes on Students (SOS)! A donation from The Biggest Loser Half Marathon/5K will benefit Shoes on Students and continue to provide new training shoes for young runners in our community.

Mark your calendars - 8/31/14. Visit the race website - register for the Half Marathon, the 5K, and bring the kids out for the 1 mile run - run on Labor Day weekend. Watch for more details from Fleet Feet Sports on training programs to get you ready to challenge the Biggest Loser Half Marathon/5K.
Here at Fleet Feet, our staff has a fondness for cat jokes.
