Welcome to FootPrints!
Fleet Feet Sports is all about FIT !  FIT encompasses many things from working with individuals to put the right shoe on their feet, to the training program that will move one to their individual FITness goals to commitments in the community that move individuals to a FIT and active lifestyle.

Brannock devicesWhen you think FIT, you think FEET and the right shoe. I am proud to say that our Fleet Feet Sport staff are the ultimate FIT experts.  They know and love all things Feet, FIT, and product.  Brian and I were pleased to present to a Turkey Trot training group being led by the RunSmart guys from Buffalo Rehab at the Independent Health YMCA in Williamsville.  The training group participants were super to work with - curious about what makes a shoe right for them and the different ways some companies approach cushion, support, and FIT.  That's what do each and every day for each and every customer.  Your path to FITness will be so much smoother if you have the right gear along the way.
The Education Coordinator at SuperFeet sent me a study done at the Institute for Sports Science in Germany that surveyed 4501 runners investigating the requirements and concerns with respect to running footwear. The study was conducted in 2011 and according to the authors, the primary goal of the study was to assess the potential effects of age and gender on the subjective ratings of running footwear across a multitude of variables, broken into four main categories: 1) Fit, 2) Roll Over, 3) Miscellaneous, 4) Market.  The results were interesting and highlight the importance of matching foot shape to shoe shape - something that every Fleet Feet FIT expert does during our FIT process.
Of the 4501 runners surveyed, 60% did not report any complaints in regards to their current running shoes (2700 runners=no complaints; 1800 runners=complaints). Of those that had complaints, roughly half of them complained about issues that can be attributed to insufficient fit in their current footwear. In general, comfort related features were rated as the most important properties of the shoe. When asked overall, what single most important property of a running shoe is, the top responses were Fit (49%), cushioning (24.8%) and comfort (15.8%). So next time you're considering a new pair of running shoes, remember FIT is the driver of satisfaction with your footwear purchase. Don't pick a shoe off a wall or online site - know that your feet really need to be properly FIT.
FIT in the community is so important to all of us at Fleet Feet Sports.  Our No Boundaries and Distance training groups are coming up on their goal races.  The beginner group will be at the Linda Yalem 5K at the end of September - if you hear a lot of cowbells that morning and see a lot of blue shirts that state "Running Changes Everything" - that is them!  Then our Distance group will be running local at the Niagara Falls International 1/2 and full marathon.  Fall beginner training groups start today at Delaware Park and UB North - you can still register, it isn't too late!
FIT in the community will be lots of fun the next week or so as we distribute 225 pairs of Brooks training shoes to high school runners from 10 Buffalo Public Schools.  All a result of our successful 2013 Fleet Feet 15K-Run into Buffalo. We are also pleased to announce that Fleet Feet will partner with the Fight for Air climb in March 2014 - an American Lung Association event that offers a unique challenge.  We were there for the first time this year and the event was great.  Mud runs, obstacle races, zombie runs - try a stair climb too.  Run 38 floors up at the former HSBC Tower!  Our team had a blast!
Too many 5K races for you?  We are partnering with a new event in October presented by the MS Society - the Monster Scramble - take your pick a 5K and a 10K in a cemetery with the appropriate Halloween theme.
FIT = Fleet Feet Sports commitment to you!

Ready for the changing weather? I am. However I am not entirely ready for it to be so dark out. But check out this new product from New Balance and you will be anxiously awaiting the sun to go down.

Arriving this week is the Beacon Jacket from New Balance! What makes this jacket so special? Funny you should ask, how about it GLOWS IN THE DARK! Yes, it is true. In addition to having full 360-degree reflectivity this sweet jacket has patterned material that actually glows in the dark. That gives it no-light visibility for any condition. Available for men in Green Gecko and women in Bright Coral, this sweet jacket should be arriving in the store by the end of the week. They are sure to sell out fast so be sure to get in early to be the most stylish runner this fall.

More concerned about your feet then your clothes? Check out the new colors for the Merino Wool Feetures Elite socks. There are four new colors for the colder weather so you can be stylish and warm. Also the Feetures Elites are now available in quarter cut for those of us who may want a bit more ankle coverage under our tights this winter.

Speaking of cool new items I have to mention the new product from Saucony. Introducing Runderpants! Stay with me on this one, running underpants for women with cool phrases. Perfect for the Undy Runs out there or just giving yourself the extra kick in the rear in the morning. These cools undies have phrases on them to keep you motivated like "Catch me if you can" and "See you at the finish line". More important than being fun, they are super comfortable and moisture-wicking. Perfect for your next race or training run.
