Middle school teacher named national master teacher, working with Library of Congress
|
Folsom Middle School teacher, Melissa Lawson has just been named a
master teacher for the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Consortium
by
National History Day
(NHD). One of only ten in the nation to hold this position! She and her cohorts will work directly with the Library of Congress and NHD staff to create a study guide with classroom resources, so students and teachers can have better access to the largest library in the world. According to Lawson "
the goal of this endeavor is to help teachers everywhere feel empowered to incorporate the many treasures within the primary sources
holdings in the Library of Congress."
For the last 21 years, Lawson has been a NHD leader for FCUSD and the region, and has coached hundreds of students through the process of competing at NHD. According to Lawson, "NHD is project-based learning at its finest. It challenges all students to learn beyond what the standards require." She's coached students "who didn't think they could write 500 or 700 words and come out the other side knowing how to organize their written work, conduct meaningful research, cite sources, and learn that history is more than old dead guys." The value students get out of NHD goes beyond the competition. Some say it has helped them prepare for college, while for others, it helped create personal connection and relevance with the past. Lawson reminisced about one student's project, which "told the story of her great-grandpa whose plane was shot down over Australia in WWII and lived to tell about it."

and many of our students are hard at work preparing now. Their first step will be to present their projects at the
Sacramento History Day
, coming up on March 7. Qualifiers will advance to the
California State History Day
competition, with hopes of competing nationally.

Award Spotlights in FCUSD
|
We're celebrating two great accomplishments in the District this week.
Congratulations to Elizabeth O'Donnell, from Folsom High, for her recognition in the VFW Voice of Democracy speech contest. Voice of Democracy provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express their thoughts in a democratic and patriotic themed essay. Elizabeth placed first in the local Post competition and was awarded $1,000.00. She went on to finish first at the District level and competed against students from throughout California to place as first runner up against 17,000 other statewide entries. Elizabeth secured over $3,000 in speech scholarship funds.
Folsom VFW Post awarded Afton Lea $750.00 and Joel George $500.00, for second and third place finishes at the Awards Dinner on January 16.
We're also happy to celebrate seniors Vivian Liu of Folsom High and Gerlyn Hinahon from Cordova High. They were each awarded Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen Awards on February 10. The DAR is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who are directly descended from a person involved in the US efforts towards independence. A non-profit group, they promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism.

Superintendent Sarah Koligian, Ed.D. will provide the keynote address. Cordova High students will serve breakfast, provide musical performances, and more.

The Cordova High Girls Soccer team won the Greater Sacramento League (GSL) Championship! This was a first league win for the team, qualifying them to advance to the CIF Section playoffs.
Congratulations to Folsom Middle School first year wrestler, Anthony Gogliano, who won an important match against another student in the third
overtime. In a tough situation all he had to do is escape to get the winning point.
The excitement from his team and fans was immeasurable! It was like he and the team won the regional championship. This is a great example of the "why" we do athletics.
Way to go athletes!
