Summer College Internship Ministry
Summer College Internship
Ministry Expands with FTE Grant!

Plans are moving forward for this ministry to expand in 2017!  This ministry will be called "Listening to the Sacred Voice of Vocation and Call" and will be a partnership shepherded by the Committee on Shared Ministry and coordinated by Foothills Retirement Community.

This unique pilot project is being funded in part due to a grant from the Forum for Theological Exploration (FTE) for vocation discernment for college students.  Please click here for additional information in our brochure.

Highlights:
  • Expanding to 8 racially diverse college interns
  • Each congregation of Foothills Presbytery is asked to consider prayerfully hosting a college intern and providing a mentor.  Some congregations and non-profits  may partner in hosting an intern.  If interested in the possibility of being  a partner congregation and/or non-profit ministry, please notify Joseph Gaston immediately!
  • Non-profit ministries are asked to consider hosting an intern also!
  • The Partner church/ministry is asked to provide the $3000 stipend paid the intern for the 10 week internship.  If this is a challenge, please let us know!
  • Please encourage your college students to consider applying.  Talk with them over Thanksgiving and Christmas!  Get them to contact us!
  • February 1, 2017 - Intern Application Deadline
For more information, contact Joseph Gaston, Chaplain of Foothills Retirement Community (mobile 864-404-8427; [email protected]).

Safe Harbor CARE Covenant

Although Safe Harbor is not a faith-based organization, we support the efforts of a committed group of congregations and church leaders throughout the Upstate of SC who are striving to learn more about how to best respond to the issue of domestic abuse within their communities of faith.

Please read and reflect on this CARE Covenant and consider joining this committed group of church leaders by signing the covenant below. Once you have signed this covenant, we'll keep in touch by sharing relevant educational resources and training opportunities to help your congregation to be equipped to recognize and respond to the issue of domestic abuse.  Click here to read more
PDA Trip to Columbia
On Saturday, November 5th nine of us set out early in the morning to travel to Columbia, SC to work on a home that needed repairs from the Oct. 2016 floods.  This particular home, owned by Ms. Davis, had been sitting empty for over a year.  Ms. Davis' basement flooded sending water up the walls to the living area causing mold and mildew to set in.

A wonderful organization, St. Bernard's Project (SBP), works in several cities across the US, including Columbia, to help people rebuild their homes and lives from natural disasters. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) works with SBP to fill volunteers and complete projects.  SBP had been working on Ms. Davis home for a few weeks prior to our arrival.
We had wonderful volunteers (lay people and ministers) from First Presbyterian Church in Simpsonville, Fourth and St. Giles Presbyterian churches.   We mainly worked in three rooms dry-walling walls and ceilings.  Everyone worked well together and enjoyed the fellowship as well as learning new skills.  After working all day, we met in Clinton at the Fatz CafĂ© to break bread together one more time and to share laughter from our time together.

If you have any interest in volunteering with SBP or PDA, please check them out at http://www.stbernardproject.org and https://pda.pcusa.org.

Next Church Gathering 2017
NEXT CHURCH NATIONAL GATHERING 2017

Kansas City, Missouri ~ March 13-15, 2017

The theme for the 2017 National Gathering is  "Wells & Walls: Well-Being in a Thirsty World." Our guiding scripture is John 4:1-42 - the Samaritan woman at the well. In John 4 we are told of Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well, her encounter with her people, and Jesus' words to the disciples. In the person and story of Jesus Christ we see movement across barriers, new understanding, and life-giving transformation as a consistent pattern.
As we look toward the 2017 National Gathering, as we invite local congregations and regional leadership to come together in the nation's heartland of Kansas City, we recognize there are many walls and wells that manifest in our lives.
Spartanburg Community Thanksgiving Service

The Spartanburg Community Thanksgiving Service
will be held on  Tuesday, November 22, at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg. This annual service provides an opportunity for the community to gather together to collectively give thanks. All proceeds collected by the offering will benefit the Spartanburg Interfaith Hospitality Network (SPIHN).

The Spartanburg County Foundation matches the offering given, up to $5,000. A reception will be held immediately following the service.
SC Lay School
The South Carolina Lay Theology School met at Presbyterian College Oct 14-16 and the Foothills was well represented.

This fall we had 12 people and were the 3rd largest. Thank you to all who attended.  (Foothills usually has about 4-6 people attend and subsequently we have the smallest number of all the presbyteries.)

The classes included- Pastoral Care, Preaching, Reformed Theology and the Old Testament book of Exodus. Tom Malone was the professor for the Exodus class and I believe we will be seeing him a bit more as a professor at the Lay Theology School. He has signed up to teach the book of Acts at our spring session.

The Spring session will meet at PC for the weekend of March 31-April 2. The classes offered will be Old Testament, Worship and Sacraments, Presbyterian Polity, Church History, Exegesis, and the book of Acts. Anyone is welcome to take these classes as they are wonderful for continuing education. The Presbyterian Polity class would be suggested for anyone who is a Ruling Elder.

If you have any questions or would like any information on the South Carolina Lay Theology School or the Commissioned Ruling Elder program please contact:
Sarah Cornell, 864-934-6845 email:  [email protected]
E3 Workshops & Registration
Annually in January the Education and Equipping Ministry Team of Providence Presbytery sponsors a comprehensive training event for church leaders, staff, volunteers and members.

E3 is known throughout the Presbytery as a wonderful opportunity to energize ministries. For information or to inquire about workshops, contact  the presbytery office.

Trophy Case to be Donated!

Fourth Presbyterian Church needs to find a new home for this large trophy case.  There are glass shelves and the hardware to go with it as well.  Whoever takes it will need to be able to move and transport it.  If someone is really interested in measurements, they can call Jennifer Fouse Sheorn at 615-335-2505 or email [email protected].

We need it moved by Friday, Dec. 2nd or we'll take it to Salvation Army.  Thanks so much!
Christmas - SC Inn Montreat
Christmas 2016
SC Inn at Montreat

While Santa is relaxing on our patio, he's not "dreaming of a white Christmas," he's thinking about what a nice spot the patio could be for meals, small group gatherings, or just a spot for our guests to enjoy being outside with a view of the mountains.

In his mind, Santa can picture a new wall with secure railings, improved stairs to the Inn, benches, flat space for picnic tables, and some nice landscaping.

The S.C. Board would like to encourage you, as you and Santa are planning for your Christmas giving, to include a special gift to the S.C. Inn designated for "patio improvement" so that we can make Santa's dream come true.  Click here to Read More!
