Update on physician recruitment progress
Franklin General Hospital CEO Kim Price reports that progress continues toward filling two permanent provider positions on the Franklin General Hospital/Franklin Medical Center staff.
"We have identified good candidates, and talks with them continue to move forward," Price says.
"Meanwhile," he adds, "we continue to follow up on other leads through a variety of recruitment resources, both regional and national. We are also scheduling interim providers who will help us meet our patients' healthcare needs until those permanent positions are filled.
"Our goal is for our patients not to experience any interruption in their care."
In this, as in everything we do, FGH and FMC remain committed to being "your trusted healthcare partner for life." |

Know the dangers of fireworks
With the Fourth of July quickly approaching, Prevent Blindness America warns the public about the potential danger of fireworks. Injuries from fireworks can have a severe impact, even affecting lives years after the accident.
In 1997 when Colin Burns was in the 5th grade, his life changed when shrapnel and gunpowder from a firework that someone else lit, destroyed his left eye. Burns endured multiple surgeries over the next few years. Because the risk of injury to his right eye was too great, he was not able to play in organized sports growing up. The lingering effects of his eye injury have made many activities, including driving and reading, more difficult.
"Of course as a child, I didn't fully realize how important healthy eyes were until my accident," says Burns. "I hope my story will serve as a reminder to everyone, especially parents, on how dangerous fireworks can be."
Last year, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated in its annual report that there were an estimated 8,700 injuries treated in emergency rooms in the United States, with the majority of those around the Fourth of July holiday.
Of those injuries, 12 percent were to the eyes. And, as in Colin's case, bystanders are more often injured by fireworks than the operators themselves.
Here are some tips to help prevent fireworks-related injuries:
We wish everyone a safe and happy 4th of July celebration. |

Erran Miller named FGH EMS manager
Franklin General Hospital (FGH) has announced that Erran Miller has been named the new FGH Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Manager. He replaces Thomas Craighton, who will assume responsibilities as Franklin County Emergency Management Coordinator on July 6.
A Dumont native, Miller has a strong background in EMS. He served on the Dumont EMS crew while still a high school student in 1999. He joined the FGH EMS staff in 2001. In 2003 he went to the University of Iowa to earn his Paramedic Specialist certification. Miller has also served as a member of the Hampton Police Department.
FGH CEO Kim Price says, "We are pleased to welcome Erran to this position. He has proven to be a capable and qualified medical professional and leader. We are confident that, under his leadership, FGH Emergency Medical Services will continue to provide outstanding service to our community. Truly, our dedicated EMS staff, which is a call away for area residents day and night, every day of the year, helps make FGH a 'trusted healthcare partner for life.'"
Miller says, "I am excited to get started in this new capacity and continue to build on the great things that have been established in FGH EMS. I have been proud to be part of the great FGH EMS crew for years. They are highly committed and excellent at providing emergency care quickly and compassionately. I look forward to working with them in this new role as we support the function of Franklin General Hospital and the Franklin County area. Together we will continue to make the health and safety of area residents our number one priority." |

Schedule your student's athlete physical
Through July, Franklin Medical Center clinics continue to offer a special rate of $35 for student athletic physicals for the 2013-2014 school year. Students receive an exam by a licensed, qualified medical provider to ensure they meet the health requirements to participate in athletics.
A more comprehensive physical exam is also available that will serve as the annual physical doctors recommend for youngsters. If your insurance covers an annual physical, the athletic physical can be performed in conjunction with this exam.
Athletic physical forms are available at FMC clinics. Designated sections should be completed by the parent and brought with the student to his or her scheduled appointment. For an appointment, call any Franklin Medical Center clinic. (See phone numbers at left above.) |

In addition, Franklin General Hospital and Franklin County E-M-S will be on hand throughout the fair, for everything from basic first aid for cuts and burns to dehydration and heat exhaustion. The EMS will be located near the west gate of the fairgrounds. There will also be an ambulance for all grandstand shows. |
