  • One-time Helper: Put up a bulletin board (everything’s ready to go) at Franklin & Randall

Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action
At Franklin and Randall School last week we practiced   Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action.  Our intention for the week was to bring together community members, teachers, parents, students, and union members to put forth a vision for a school system and community that truly values Black lives. We called on all of our colleagues, administrators, students, families, and community members to partner with us as we engaged in the National Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action Feb 4-8, 2019. We committed to analyzing and challenging both our personal and systemic or institutional racialized beliefs and practices. This work is urgent and long overdue. The week was one of action embedded in the lifelong work of creating a society and school system where all of our students, staff, and families experience respect, equity, and justice.

Staff read books from the recommend resources provided by Madison Teachers Inc. Staff also wore the Black Lives Matter at School shirts throughout the week. Staff at grades K-2 are embracing the Week of Action National Demands and the Guiding Principles of the Week of Action especially Unapologetically Black.
Randall Art Project
Art teacher, Mx. Hemmerich, and their students have been working hard this action week. Throughout the week, students made a grid, sketched, and then painted portraits of   Marley Dias  and  KING NAHH .

MMSD News posted to Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter about the project. Check out the links below. (You may need to scroll a bit or do a keyword search to find the posts.)

From Chris in the Franklin Gym
Chris in the Franklin gym would like to remind parents & students that gym shoes are essential for Physical Education class. With all the snow and ice we are starting to see boots of various shapes and sizes show up in the gym! The kids do a lot of running, changing directions and other activities in PE where appropriate shoes... (not winter boots)... help us to be more successful. If your student wears winter boots to school... please pack gym shoes in their backpack or keep a pair in their locker.

On a related note... if your child outgrows their current gym shoes, we'd be happy to recycle gently used shoes into our "extras" rack... shoes we use for kids who forget theirs. Please send them to Franklin in a bag and drop them off in the gym. We don't need anything larger than 2.

Next week we start our 5 week Health and Fitness Unit - looking at the heart, lungs, blood, bones, muscles and the food we eat.
