Latino Parent Meeting Report
December 13, 2018
My goodness! So many people! The snow predicted for the evening held off! Sylla opened the meeting with a heartfelt holiday greeting to all! The topic for the evening was Nutrition, in particular, healthy foods and snacks for kids. Through games and visuals, Aracely Portillo from UW gave parents many healthy eating tips for kids. Parents learned what a child’s diet should consist of, how to motivate kids to eat healthy, and what to do to improve the healthy eating and drinking habits of kids. Aracely had contests and other interactive activities. Parents were engaged and had many questions. They always enjoy Aracely’s presentation and have invited her to come back next year.

After the meeting we all went down to the gym for our traditional holiday gathering. We started with the breaking of the piñatas. What?! Candy before dinner?! Yes. Don’t think this had anything to do with the fact that I messed up and forgot we had no dinner plates! Ellen’s husband was kind enough to run to the store to get us plates while the children broke the piñatas. One of the parents made a beautiful Christmas tree piñata! The Franklin kids and younger siblings broke that one. It is always marvelous to see their faces light up when it’s their turn to hit it! Even the littlest ones know the drill! The Randall kids and older siblings had their turn at another piñata afterwards. Blindfolded to make things more exciting!

Parents brought many of the traditional food items of the Posada season... chicken tamales, pork tamales, sweet tamales, buñuelos, rice, beans, salsa, chocolate caliente, atole, and more! We all enjoyed a wonderful time together as a big family! We socialized while we savored the delicious food.

Overall, always a great experience. One of the most fun meetings of the year! Our next one will not be until February 21st. No meeting in January due to report card work and wintry weather.

Randall BookShare
Randall will again be hosting a BookShare (most likely in February or March) where all Randall students will be invited to choose a few free books. Our goal is to collect 1400 books, and we need your help. We need gently used books that appeal to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.

You can drop off your books in the Randall Library, between now and mid February.
