 Newport Boat Show

The Newport Boat Show (April 28-May 1) was a tremendous success.  The atmosphere was positive and we loved talking with current clients and a lot of prospective clients.  If you are in the market for a new yacht, sale prices are incredibly low right now and a lot of buyers were taking advantage of this.

The Newport Show added to our positive feelings about the revitalization of the boating industry and the increased activity we have seen in 2011.  A big thank you to Ace USA for partnering with us for this event and for all of the other exhibitors who helped make the show a great success.

Our booth had a lot of activity which included a free raffle for a wagon filled with beach and  picnic supplies.  We drew the winning name on Sunday afternoon and the lucky winner was Jack from Irvine.  April Cohen delivered the "winnings" to his office the week after the show. Come visit us at the San Diego Yacht and Boat Show July 14 -17th at the Sheraton Hotel & Marina and take part in our next raffle!

Boating in Mexico

Map of Mexico

We have all heard the negative reports about traveling in Mexico. For boaters, however, Mexico still offers some of the best cruising and fishing on the west coast. We insure hundreds of boats in Mexico - many of them are there year round. A few things to remember if you are boating in Mexico:

  • Berth in well-known, secure marinas.
  • Take out a Mexican Liability policy from a Mexican Insurer. Although your regular yacht insurance policy may cover you in Mexican waters, the Mexican government may require sight of an additional policy issued by a Mexican Company if you are in a boating accident.
  • If you are in a boating accident, always file a claim with your agent as soon as possible. Although claims activity is no higher in Mexico than the U.S., settling claims there is a bit more strategic. Make sure your primary Hull & Machinery policy is with an A-Rated company that has experienced adjusters in Mexico.  As an option for the additional policy, we represent International Gateway (Ace Seguros) for your Mexican Liability needs.

Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure

Nauti-BoobsTeam Nauti-Boobs, lead by our fearless leader, Marc Bay of Bay Yachts, participated in the 2010 Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure in beautiful San Diego November 19th-21st. This year's team surpassed all of their previous years donations reaching $23,609!

Friday was beautiful as team Nauti-Boobs met up at the starting line for the opening ceremony, but the nice weather ended by Saturday and the team was forced to walk in the pouring rain to finish the day at a flooded camp. Fraser Yacht Insurance's April Cohen toughed out the day and was the only team member to sleep at the soggy camp.

Sunday morning brought more rain but the participants were better prepared for the weather with ponchos, trash bags and pink duct tape! Other than soggy clothing, some sniffles and blisters, all of the walkers made it to the finish line to receive their T-shirt and hugs. The dedicated Nauti-Boobs participants were:
Marc Bay (Bay Yachts, Inc.); April Cohen (Fraser Yacht Insurance); Mindy Benard (MPC Boaters Directory); Anita Mays (Channel Island Yacht Brokerage); Bill Danforth; Tanya Engle; Steven Ruhl and Sue Wilson-Locke.

For additional information on how you can join the 2011 Team Nauti-Boobs, please contact Marc Bay at marc@bayyachts.com.

Travelers Electric Boat Program

As Gas Costs Rise, Travelers Insurance Gives Electric Boaters a Break

Duffy

As gas prices quickly rise and boat owners are looking for ways to improve fuel economy, electric powered boats are quickly entering the market.

Travelers Insurance has stepped it up and has been the first insurance company to deliver an insurance discount to electric boat owners. The Hartford, Conn. based company said it's electric boat discount of up to 10 percent is the first of it's kind in the industry.

Travelers defines an electric boat as a vessel 100 percent powered by a propeller driven, electric, in-board source where utility power is stored on board.

According to Travelers, most electric boats cost between $1 and $2 to fully charge for 10 or 12 hours of cruising time. This translates to about 10 cents to 12 cents per hour to operate. The marine industry estimates that conventionally fueled boats use about one gallon of fuel per hour for every 10 horsepower, while diesel engines consume about one gallon of fuel per hour for every 18 horsepower.

Travelers also stated that an analysis of fuel costs at 13 marinas around the country found that their prices were about 78 cents per gallon more than the national average for automobile gasoline and about 42 cents per gallon more than the national average for auto diesel fuel.

Please give us a call or send us an email if you would like any additional information regarding this exciting program. With a quick phone call and some operator and boat information, we will be happy to provide a quote!
