Announcing the 2024 Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest

Sponsored by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library

The 33rd Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest is open to all Franklin County residents and to students ages 12-14 and 15-18 who attend school in Franklin County.

Each entrant may submit a maximum of three poems.

Rules for Submission

● Poems must be unpublished.

● Previous 1st Place Adult winners of the Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest are not eligible to enter again.

● Previous top-placing Youth winners of the Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest are eligible to enter again when they enter a new age category.

● Entrants may submit up to three poems; they will be reproduced as originally submitted. 

● Entries must be submitted by one of these methods.

● Multi-page poems must have page numbers clearly marked.

● No individual poem may exceed 3 standard pages.

● Please do not staple multipage poems.

● On reverse of poem (or on a second page in the case of an email entry) indicate ADULT or YOUNG POET entry and please include the following contact information for the poet:

• Name
• Address
• Telephone number
• Email address
• Youth categories must also include phone/email of parent/guardian or teacher

● No identifying information should be written on the same side of the paper as the poem(s).

● Young Poets entries must include their age at the bottom right hand corner of their poem(s) and then circle.

● Submit on white 8.5 x 11 paper, printed clearly or typed in plain typeface; no markers. Notification of receipt of entry will occur, generally, on or after the February 26^th deadline, via email, unless a self-addressed stamped envelope is included with a mailed entry.

● Poems will not be returned.

● Entries must be received by February 26, 2024 (postmark or email received date).

Awards will be given as follows

Adult category:

First Prize, Adult: Stewardship of the Poet’s Seat Chair for one year (name engraved on plaque), handcrafted poet’s ceramic platter and a $25 bookshop gift certificate.

Second and Third Place Prizes, Adult $25 bookshop gift certificate and a mug.

Youth category:

There will be two winners for each subcategory (ages 12-14 & ages 15-18); these winners are not ranked.

The top two places from each Young Poet groups: $25 bookshop gift certificate and a mug.

In the past, the Friends of the GPL Book Sales were one of the highlights of the season in Greenfield. As you might remember, they occurred in the basement of the old library. Since this space is no longer available, there will be a modified version of the book sales. In the past it not only raised thousands of dollars to run programs at the library, but people throughout Franklin County were able to donate their used books, and then find a myriad of books to buy at amazing prices for their own enjoyment. We hope to make this give and take available again.

We will be accepting books by appointment only from January 27 until February 2

Wednesday Night Writers Workshop

January 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 6 pm

Local History Room

Writers are invited to attend a weekly informal gathering on Wednesday nights at 6 pm, in the GPL Local History Room, to workshop their prose and poetry in-progress. Everyone is welcome to bring three single-spaced or six double-spaced pages max and enough copies so that everyone can read along and provide feedback. Writers will take turns reading their work aloud, with a volunteer moderator leading the discussion. Writers aren’t allowed to talk while being critiqued.

Women in Art with Jane Oneail

Women have long been the subject of art, often depicted as nothing more than objects of desire. How do images of women change when women become the creators? This program examines the history of women in art in brief and then explores the lives, careers and works of several major women artists from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, including Artemisia Gentileschi and Mary Cassatt.

Jane Oneail (pronounced OH-neel) is the founder of Culturally Curious, an arts education consulting firm specializing in art appreciation programs. She curates and delivers programs throughout New England and beyond.

Exploring Non-Fiction Book Discussion: What an Owl Knows

Join us at the GPL for our bi-monthly book discussion as we explore different authors and genres. This month we are exploring the Science of Nature with Jennifer Ackerman’s book What an Owl Knows: The New Science of the World's Most Enigmatic Birds.

For millennia, owls have captivated and intrigued us. Our fascination with these mysterious birds was first documented more than thirty thousand years ago in the Chauvet Cave paintings in southern France. With their forward gaze and quiet flight, owls are often a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, and foresight. But what does an owl really know? And what do we really know about owls? 

In her book, Jennifer Ackerman illuminates the rich biology and natural history of these birds and reveals remarkable new scientific discoveries about their brains and behavior. By providing extraordinary new insights into the science of owls, What an Owl Knows pulls back the curtain on the nature of the world’s most enigmatic group of birds.

Join us on Wednesday, January 10, at 8 pm, as we kick off the New Year talking to Rebecca Serle, about her journey writing epic love stories to span generations, including One Italian Summer, In Five Years, The Dinner List, and many more.

Additionally, in a special preview, Serle will briefly discuss her forthcoming novel (due out on March 5, 2024) Expiration Dates. In Expiration Dates, Daphne Bell believes the universe has a plan for her. Every time she meets a new man, she receives a slip of paper with his name and a number on it—the exact amount of time they will be together. The papers told her she’d spend three days with Martin in Paris; five weeks with Noah in San Francisco; and three months with Hugo, her ex-boyfriend turned best friend. Daphne has been receiving the numbered papers for over twenty years, always wondering when there might be one without an expiration. Dr. Lustig’s book, Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine, weaves the interconnected strands of nutrition, health/disease, medicine, environment, and society into a completely new fabric by proving on a scientific basis a series of iconoclastic revelations.

He insists that if we do not fix our food and change the way we eat, we will continue to court chronic disease, bankrupt healthcare, and threaten the planet. But there is hope: his book and this webinar explain what’s needed to fix all three. Dr. Lustig offers a doable plan for us to heal and restore our health and well-being with real food and, in the process, boost our immunity to viruses like Covid-19.

Come to the Greenfield Library’s Conference Room on Wednesday, January 10, at 6 pm to connect with other WordPress users! This meetup is open to anyone interested in WordPress: newbies, developers, designers and administrators.

Bring your WordPress questions! This is a great time to figure out where you're stuck, and make some progress on your project. You may wish to bring a laptop to take notes or to share your screen. You may need a HDMI port or adapter if you want to plug into the big screen.

This program, which meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month, is free and open to everyone in our community.

Drop in at the Greenfield Public Library for a knitting/crocheting group! All skill levels are welcome, whether you’re new with needles and hooks, or an old pro. Bring your own supplies, and enjoy some time working on your project while connecting with other crafters.

New! Gale Digital Legal Resources Now Available

Selling a house? Making a will? Signing a lease? The Greenfield Public Library now offers Gale Legalforms, an online digital resource, to help residents with basic legal needs. Gale Legalforms offers Massachusetts-specific “attorney forms'' - officially approved forms actually used by law firms. 

Many of the forms and documents are available in Word and Adobe format so you just need to simply “fill in the blanks''.

Each kit contains everything a teen will need to learn a new skill. Kits are intended for youth ages 12-18 and are available on a first come, first serve basis. Kits must be picked up and

dropped off at Greenfield Public Library and can be checked out for 3 weeks. They are available in the teen area at the library.

Free of Charge at the GPL

Need a document notarized? One of our library staff members is a notary public, and able to notarize documents as staffing allows. Notary services are available most weekdays, but an appointment is required. This service is provided free of charge.

To schedule an appointment, and to verify that your document meets the Massachusetts Notary Law requirements, please contact us at 413-772-1544, or email Pamela McBride at [email protected]

Documents can only be notarized in person. Please bring the unsigned document and a state or federally issued photo ID to your appointment.

Museum Passes at the Greenfield Public Library

Greenfield Public Library’s museum passes are now available! Pass availability will depend on museum hours. Check museum websites for admission requirements before using passes. Each museum has different requirements. Passes may only be picked up on the day you have them reserved; only one attraction’s pass per day can be reserved. All museum passes must be returned by 8:30 the next morning.

The Greenfield Public Library is open the following days and hours:

● Monday through Wednesday: 9:30 am – 8 pm

● Thursday and Friday: 9:30 am – 5 pm

● Saturday: 9:30 am – 2 pm

For security purposes, the upstairs floor closes 15 minutes before closing time.

Main Doors are locked 5 minutes before closing.

The Greenfield Public Library has mobile hotspots for patrons!

GPL has devices to lend to CWMARS library cardholders who are in good standing and are at least 18 years of age.

Hotspots must be picked up and returned to the Information Services desk at the library and may not be checked out again for at least a 24-hour period. Each device circulates for one week with an automatic renewal and supports up to ten mobile devices.

Mobile Beacon is the primary provider for the hotspots, which support 4G and LTE mobile networks, but not 5G.
