It was a rainy Friday in September . . . at the Franklin County Fair. It was flooded and almost nobody was there and they closed at 7 o'clock and the Friends of the GPL lost hundreds of dollars in raffle ticket sales that we usually sell. So if you haven't already bought a bunch of tickets at the fair or the library, we really need you to click here and buy some right now so we can provide programs throughout the year.

This annual fundraising effort helps to bring in funds to support all of the programs hosted through the library—adult, teens and kids are able to enjoy special experiences because of the money raised. In addition, it supports the museum passes and the homebound program. We have had incredible support from our community in the past and we are hopeful for another wonderful turnout!

Have you picked up one of the GPL Spice Club Kits? Share your cooking with others at our first Spice Club Potluck, on Tuesday, October 24, at 6 pm in the Community Meeting Room.

Prepare a dish to share using one of the ingredients featured in the three recent Spice Club Kits: Thyme, Sage, or Oregano. Bring your completed dish to the potluck,with a printed copy of therecipe you used. Everyone can sample the dishes and discuss their cooking process!

Participants must follow CDC guidelines for safe food handling and allergen information.

Literary Teas combines literary works of fiction with cozy cups of local tea, from Greenfield’s local tea shop, Alchemy of Avalon. Join Lisa and Diane for a GPL discussion of Who is Maud Dixon?, by Alexandra Andrews, on Tuesday, October 17, at 6:30 pm in the Conference Room.

Florence Darrow has always felt she was destined for greatness, but after a disastrous affair with her married boss, she starts to doubt herself. All that changes when she sets off for Morocco with her new boss, the celebrated but reclusive author Maud Dixon. Although many of you are using the new library, some of you have not had an opportunity to visit and partake of the services offered. In order for you to get your bearings even before visiting and to get a feel for the services offered, you have an opportunity to take a virtual library tour.

Drop in to the Teen Room during the month of October to decorate a small spooky coffin, and make a Halloween Heishi bracelet while supplies last. We’ll also be converting our Barbie Dream House to a Scream House. Teens can make Barbie Halloween costumes and create tiny creepy props for the house.

Do you love to cook and want to try new flavors and recipes? Stop by the library and pick up this month’s Spice Club Kit, available on Tuesday, October 3.



In October, we are cooking with oregano, one of the most popular herbs in the cook's garden. Used fresh or dried, it adds plenty of flavor to all types of dishes from soups, sauces, and salads to meat and fish. Included in this month’s kit are a sample of oregano, recipes and information, along with tips on growing, planting and harvesting the herb. 

Registration is not required, but supplies are limited. Spice Kits can be picked up at the Reader’s Advisory Desk on the second floor, on a first come, first served basis.

Discovery and Travel Channel star Ronny LeBlanc, a Massachusetts native, will be at the Greenfield Public Library for “Expedition Bigfoot”, on Wednesday, October 18, at 6:30 pm, in the Community Meeting Room.

Star of Discovery Channel’s “Expedition Bigfoot” and Travel Channel’s “Paranormal Caught on Camera”, Ronny LeBlanc’s interest in the supernatural is deeply rooted in his upbringing. Also the author of Monsterland: Encounters with UFOs, Bigfoot and Orange Orbs, he will share insights on what the elusive creature Bigfoot might really be.

Copies of Monsterland will be available to purchase and be signed by the author.

Meet up with other chess players at the Greenfield Public Library. All ages and skill levels are welcome, for both casual and serious games. Chess instruction is available for beginners, and anyone wanting to learn the game. Chess sets will be provided, but feel free to bring your own!

NANOWRIMO meets AI

Join Jeremiah Rood on Wednesday, October 25, at 6:30 pm for “Here Be Dragons: NANOWRIMO meets AI”, in anticipation of National Novel Writing Month at the GPL.

This year’s NaNoWriMo is the first year in which AI tools have become widely available to the public. Join Jeremiah Rood for a discussion of Artificial Intelligence from a writer’s perspective, including considering the privacy implications, considering the tools available, and discussing how AI might be helpful in the novel writing process.

During the month of November, GPL will serve as a”Come Write In” location for National Novel Writing Month, offering writers and want-to-be writers a place to embrace their inner creativity. The library will host a number of milestone events to help encourage writers to both keep going to and build connections with fellow writers in the area.

Barrett's Haunted Mansion with Mary Barrett Costello

During most of the year Mary Barrett Costello is busy running her restaurant, the Abington Ale House, in Abington, Massachusetts. But every Halloween season, things get considerably more scary behind the beloved restaurant. 

Barrett's Haunted Mansion is a labor of love for all involved. Along with their two haunted houses that are changed each year, they also offer special nights like Bite & Fright, a Lights on Tour, and extreme nights for guests who don't mind being touched in total darkness for an extra scary experience.

The Old Joliet Haunted Prison is a real haunted location with a history of its own. GPL FOUNDATION MAKES THIRD $500,000 DONATION TO CITY OF GREENFIELD 

The Greenfield Public Library Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to announce it has presented the city of Greenfield with its third check for $500,000 to offset the construction costs of the new Greenfield Public Library building. This is the third of four fund transfers the Foundation expects to deliver to the city. 

The Foundation makes this gift to Greenfield on behalf of the hundreds of citizens of Greenfield and beyond who have given funds to help build the new library. 

Board members also wish to acknowledge and thank the many dedicated and hard-working members of the City’s staff and the volunteers who have led this project to its completion delivering our amazing state-of-the-art library for the citizens of the community to enjoy.  The Library Building Committee is particularly saluted for its time and efforts.

The full $2-million fundraising goal is already pledged to the Foundation enabling it to have made transfers to the City on a regular basis. As pledged funds for this project continue to be collected, the Foundation plans to make its final payment at some point next year.

New! Gale Digital Legal Resources Now Available

Selling a house? Making a will? Signing a lease? The Greenfield Public Library now offers Gale Legalforms, an online digital resource, to help residents with basic legal needs. Gale Legalforms offers Massachusetts-specific “attorney forms'' - officially approved forms actually used by law firms. 

Many of the forms and documents are available in Word and Adobe format so you just need to simply “fill in the blanks''.

Each kit contains everything a teen will need to learn a new skill. Kits are intended for youth ages 12-18 and are available on a first come, first serve basis. Kits must be picked up and

dropped off at Greenfield Public Library and can be checked out for 3 weeks. They are available in the teen area at the library.

Free of Charge at the GPL

Need a document notarized? One of our library staff members is a notary public, and able to notarize documents as staffing allows. Notary services are available most weekdays, but an appointment is required. This service is provided free of charge.

Documents can only be notarized in person. Please bring the unsigned document and a state or federally issued photo ID to your appointment.

Museum Passes at the Greenfield Public Library

Greenfield Public Library’s museum passes are now available! Pass availability will depend on museum hours. Check museum websites for admission requirements before using passes. Each museum has different requirements. Passes may only be picked up on the day you have them reserved; only one attraction’s pass per day can be reserved. All museum passes must be returned by 8:30 the next morning.

The Greenfield Public Library is open the following days and hours:

● Monday through Wednesday: 9:30 am – 8 pm

● Thursday and Friday: 9:30 am – 5 pm

● Saturday: 9:30 am – 2 pm

For security purposes, the upstairs floor closes 15 minutes before closing time.

Main Doors are locked 5 minutes before closing.

The Greenfield Public Library has mobile hotspots for patrons!

GPL has devices to lend to CWMARS library cardholders who are in good standing and are at least 18 years of age.

Hotspots must be picked up and returned to the Information Services desk at the library and may not be checked out again for at least a 24-hour period. Each device circulates for one week with an automatic renewal and supports up to ten mobile devices.

Mobile Beacon is the primary provider for the hotspots, which support 4G and LTE mobile networks, but not 5G.
