April 2026 | Newsletter

Dear Reader,

A wellspring of springtime energies inspires many of us to “dig in,” both literally and figuratively, as we support the growth and flourishing of what we value. What new venture, what new garden plots, might you take on in the coming months? You’ll find our library a most fertile place to focus your energies! Please seriously consider becoming a member of the Friends Board of Directors. We need your energy, insight, skills, and gumption—do not underestimate your skill set.

Our focussed, creative, goal-oriented board of 20 people is looking for 4 new members. What will being a board member entail? The mission of the Friends is to provide funds for all adult, teen, and children’s library programming, and to advocate for the Greenfield Public Library; all of our Board activities are tuned to that mission.

The 20-member Friends Board meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 5pm at the library, with meetings running less than 1.5 hours. As a board member, you will have the opportunity to join, run, and develop committees and events supporting our mission, many of which you've seen advertised in this newsletter—the Taste of the Towns restaurant raffle, Pints for Programs, used book sales, bingo & raffles, and the Annual Appeal. Publishing this newsletter, keeping our website current, laying out posters, managing our social media, and running the yearly Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest are also key board-member tasks.

If you are interested and want to know more, please email info@friendsofgpl.org with your contact information and we will get back to you shortly. We look forward to responding to your email with info about the in-person informational sessions being planned for April 18th (daytime) and April 22nd (evening).

If you’re not yet drawn to board membership, the library needs you in a lower-impact, lower-commitment role: Would you enjoy volunteering to help run programs at the library? Do you have skills and interests that would lend themselves to running your own program at the library, perhaps in the Makerspace? Perhaps volunteer to help the librarians with their daily activities? Might you assist in the care of the library gardens? Would you like to help the Friends by supporting our fundraising activities? Be like the crocus and start early!

Follow this link to easily explore becoming an active friend of the GPL. Once you've learned more, click on "Volunteer Interest Form" to get started in earnest.

Given the exciting growth in patrons accessing our new library—thousands more people—your know-how, imagination, and assistance are needed and welcomed.

And, of course, monetary donations are necessary and appreciated in an ongoing capacity. Please consider digging into your heart and pockets to make a recurring donation here, and thank you many times over to all those who support the Friends and the Greenfield Public Library.

Your Friends,

- Paul & Celine

Community Meeting Room

Farmer, teacher, and (retired) social worker, Danny Botkin, will show slides, tell stories, and share insights from 30+ years growing food by hand, raising dairy goats, while stewarding the

land and mentoring youth on a sunny hilltop, once part of of a notorious, Franklin County Commune. Botkin’s presentation will include the mercurial history of Laughing Dog Farm, a small, diversified, permaculture-inspired homestead, dedicated today, as much to healing and inspiration, as to “heirloom” cultivation and nutrient-dense produce.

Danny’s talk will include several practical ideas, (and secrets!) to give the landless and/or uninitiated grower a leg up, whether in a suburban backyard, an urban lot or even on a Windowsill!

“Laughing Dog’s” presentation concludes with the uplifting tale of their recent, five year loss of health, home and homestead, only to return (with the help of family, friends and community),

reclaim, and rebuild all three!

Returned now to their beloved farm, (2024) home and animals, Daniel and his wife Divya Shinn look to the future with gratitude and anticipation!

May’s Theme: a book set in a hotel or motel

Join us and discover what your neighbors are reading!
