June 2025 | Newsletter

Dear Reader,

Gratitude. We’d like to take the moment of this newsletter note to share great June blooms of gratitude on behalf of the Friends of the GPL.

Thank you for your success in getting us to more than 100% of our $16,000 Annual Appeal fundraising goal. These funds support our library programs at a moment when funding is in peril; budgets are uncertain.

Thank you for joining the wonderful celebration of poetry that is the Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest – appreciation to poets who submitted work; to the finalists open to the joyful, vulnerable experience of reading their poems aloud to a full room; to the audience enjoying words, cookies, and community. Thank you for the affirmation that poetry matters, nourishes us, and brings us together. (see below for winners, links to the readings, and more)

Thank you to our young community members on the Teen Advisory who have scrubbed and spruced the outdoor areas of the library, readying them for sunshiny days.

Thank you to the library staff who make the whole show possible, and who show up with such generosity of spirit as they traverse the ever-shifting sands of their work and community service.

Thank you to you, library patrons, for being the raison d'être of the library: since opening the doors of our new building in 2023, you’ve been the engine behind a 264% increase in visits, a 270% increase in program attendance, and a 394% increase in computer usage. Hats off to you!

We, like theologian and author Joan Chittister, feel grateful for June as it sidles into view. Chittister puts it this way:

Clearly, June is the time for being in the world in new ways, for throwing off the cold and dark spots of life. [...] Warmth becomes a way of life that makes us open to new people and new experiences; flowers confront us with our responsibility for beauty.

We invite you to continue supporting and enjoying the library this month – the warmth of the sun on its patios; the new experiences it offers through programs, literature, and community; the beauty of a free and accessible space open to all, whatever the month; the joy of little legs hurrying toward the story-time librarian brandishing a new picture book – with our sincere thanks ringing in your ears and your hearts.

Your Friends,

- Celine & Paul

WINNERS

of the

Poet's Seat Poetry Contest

On Tuesday, April 29th, every seat in the large Community Room at the library was filled, and a significant overflow crowd watched on a live feed in the conference room, as the finalists in both the youth and adult categories read their entries for this year's poetry contest. The contest has been sponsored and run by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library for decades, and attracts hundreds of entries. There was electrical energy in the room and readings of each finalist's poem was met with enthusiastic applause.

After the readings, the winners were announced. Each winner received a hand-made artisan's ceramic mug and a certificate. The grand-prize winner received a ceramic plate, a certificate, and the honor of bringing the Artisan-made "Poet's Seat" chair home for the upcoming year. Congrats to all who participated!

Conference Room
The Greenfield Public Library is pleased to welcome local author Elaine Harootunian Reardon to read from and speak about her book Stories Told in a Lost Tongue.

A story of immigration and assimilation spanning three generations, this book is an exploration of heritage and healing found in everyday rituals. There is a teller of fortunes, a monk who travels with a donkey, and the tastes and smells at the kitchen table as the alchemy of cooking raises memories of those that were loved. Stories Told In a Lost Tongue is Harootunian Reardon’s third book of poetry, an exploration of heritage and healing.

Elaine Harootunian Reardon is a storyteller telling the collective stories of our journeys and how we heal. These poems, each a short story, are drawn from her multigenerational family home in Boston where she was raised, from Kharpet, Venice, The Vatican, places on her family's journey. Elaine is the author of two previous chapbooks, The Heart Is A Nursery For Hope, 2016, and Look Behind You, published in 2019. Elaine has won several awards and has been published in various journals and anthologies in the United States and Europe.

Books will be available for purchase at the event.
