February 2025 | Newsletter

Dear Reader,

As I go through a day in our community, I listen. Recently, listening has led me to the clear conclusion that many of us are seeking two different, but often complimentary, things: escape and engagement. February can feel like a month during which our little boats get stuck in the doldrums; are tossed about by tempestuous events, political to personal; and are alternately battered and blessed by the weather. This is no simple time to be sailing. So where do we find ports in these storms? How do we pull away from the doldrums? The library offers some answers to these questions:

  • Head to the Makerspace on the 2nd floor for some creative crafting fun. Prefer to view rather than make art? Stare up into the clouds for a while with Paul Jablon's black & white photography exhibit, Clouds in Shades of Grey, being shown through the month in the Conference Room Gallery.

  • Hide out in late-1890s Europe with The Wildes: A Novel in Five Acts, or in contemporary London with The Authenticity Project; then pick your head up out of the pages and join fellow readers for discussion and a specialty bespoke, hand-blended tea created by our local tea-witch, Suzanne, from Alchemy of Avalon Tea Shop (2/18), or a spot of British high tea (2/13).

  • Get sustainable with a bouquet of mid-winter blooms at the Paper Flowers Workshop, or the Boro-style handbag-making workshop, where you'll learn to make a bag using a Japanese practice of mending and patching textiles.

  • Fill up your positivity tank by participating in one of the many drop-in "Love Your Library" events, detailed below, or discharge your angst during a Wednesday evening Writer's Workshop.

  • Speaking of writing, don't forget to submit up to three poems to the ever-popular Poet's Seat Poetry Contest, submission deadline Feb. 21st.

Friends of all ages will find many more opportunities, elaborated below, to both escape and engage at the Library.

We continue to appreciate your readership and welcome any feedback on our new newsletter format. A step-step tutorial on how to use the newsletter in tandem with the Library calendar is available in the PDF below. The calendar is not only useful for perusing and tracking events, but it's also where you can register for some of the registration-required offerings mentioned below.

Many thanks for being a friend to the Library,

- Celine & Paul

How to Protect Yourself from your Computer

Wednesday, February 26

2:30 pm, Community Meeting Room

Join Marc-Anthony Arena on Wednesday, February 26 at 2:30 pm in the GPL Community Meeting Room for “How to Protect Yourself from Your Computer”.

Every week, intelligent, successful people complain they feel stupid or report that their computer guy called them stupid or that they've been scammed. Really, they've just been thrust into an industry that continually complexifies itself in order to intimidate. Marc-Anthony Arena will help you de-mystify your computer, save money, show you how to protect yourself from scams, and answer your computer questions!

Known as The Computer Exorcist, Marc has accumulated extensive Windows, Mac, Mint, and electronics experience. Once he discovered that the vast majority of headaches, security issues, and tech expenditures are completely unnecessary, he wrote a book, launched a podcast, and embarked on a speaking tour, to explain the industry in Plain English.

Copies of his book will be available for purchase.

LOCAL ARTISTS' EXHIBITS ARE NEW AT THE LIBRARY

A B&W Photography Exhibit

Clouds in Shades of Gray

Paul Jablon

at the

Conference Room Gallery

February 1 – 28

The concept of clouds is as ephemeral as clouds themselves. For a photographer they can overwhelm, draw your eye to distraction, or create movement. They can be the paintbrush of light and hue. As they move and change they create different visual and emotional feelings. They can be overtures or minuets. Since I have first held a camera I have been obsessed with them as they bring sense of drama or tranquility.
