Fulton County Responds to Concerns Regarding Property Tax Assessment Notices
Fulton County's Board of Assessors says a formula error caused an incorrect estimated total property tax amount to appear on some property tax assessment notices sent to Fulton County property owners last week.
Preliminary analysis suggests that parcels in the city of Atlanta were affected. The Board of Assessors is working to determine if any other properties were impacted by the glitch. The information on the property tax assessment notices is believed to be correct with the exception of the total tax estimate listed at the bottom of the property tax assessment form.
These property tax assessment notices are not tax bills. Property owners can expect to receive their tax bills this fall as they have in years past. A new state law passed last year required counties to issue a property tax assessment notice to every homeowner annually. The law also required counties to use last year's millage rate in their calculations.
Property owners are encouraged to compare the 2011 appraised value of their property to the value listed on last year's tax bill. If your 2011 appraised value did not change, and your applicable millage rates remained the same, the likelihood is that your 2011 tax bill will not change. If your 2011 appraised value decreased, and your applicable millage rates remained the same, the likelihood is that your 2011 tax bill will decrease as well.
Fulton County is hosting a series of public meetings to educate the public on these assessment notices. The first public meeting will be held Friday, May 13 at the South Service Center (5600 Stonewall Tell Road, Suite 224, College Park) at 10 a.m.

Fulton Health Inspectors Provide Training on Food Safety
The Fulton County Office of Environmental Health Service (OEHS) has been providing free training on Food Safety for food service providers who wish to learn more about the Georgia Code on Food Safety. Training on the Georgia Food Code is held twice a month (once at the Georgia Restaurant Association and once at the Aldredge Health Center). ServSafe (accreditation for food service establishment operators) is also held once a month.
Environmental Health Services has been working with the mobile food vendors as well. OEHS recently conducted a "Street Food Summit" at the Helene S. Mills Senior Multi-Purpose Facility for the vendors to educate them on Fulton County policies and to build better relationships.
Recently Food Service vendors have requested a better understanding of the Georgia Code for Food Safety and expressed concerns on how scores are given so OEHS has been conducting meetings to answer questions and address concerns. They have met with restaurants in Buckhead and hospitals located in the county to discuss the Georgia Code and receive feedback on any areas where they feel improvement is needed. OEHS plans to have more sessions such as these as well as, provide more information on the county website such as food recalls and regulation or procedural changes. Click here for dates of future training opportunities.

Fulton County Joins Fulton County Schools and South Fulton Cities in Launching "Cool Cats Don't Litter" Campaign
On Earth Day 2011, more than 30,000 students in South Fulton will bring home litter bags and educational anti-litter book marks as part of the new "Cool Cats Don't Litter" campaign. Fulton County Commissioner William "Bill" Edwards joined Fulton County Schools and the mayors and police chiefs from South Fulton cities in kicking off the campaign at Hapeville Elementary where they were, joined by students. "Cool Cats Don't Litter" was established through a partnership between the Fulton County Teaching Museum South and the Fulton County Public Works Department. Police in South Fulton cities are renewing their commitment to enforce litter laws, and will be ticketing litter bugs over the next 30 days. According to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, each Georgia resident disposes of approximately 6.3 pounds of trash each day. In one year that adds up to more than 2,300 pounds. In addition to cleanup costs incurred by communities, litter creates a "broken window" effect, leading to other quality-of-life crimes.
