#GC79 news from the Dioceses of Eastern and Western Michigan.
July 5, 2018

The first official day of General Convention has concluded.

Yes, even though we've been here since Monday and Tuesday, the first legislative sessions of the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops took place this morning. Previous days have been filled with committee hearings, meetings, and the other business of convention beyond the legislative, including the House of Bishops' listening session and liturgy on sexual abuse in the church.

In addition to our legislative sessions, we participated in the opening Eucharist of the 79th General Convention and heard Presiding Bishop Curry call us to the "Way of Love" - a rule of

Updates on the Convention
Issue: Prayer Book Revision
GC79 will decide - do we begin the process of BCP revision?
Following the direction of the previous General Convention, the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music studied, researched, and considered the subject of Prayer Book revision and released a report offering several ways forward. Those suggestions resulted in two resolutions - A068 and A069.

A068 would begin the process of drafting a new prayer book immediately following the 2021 General Convention. The revisions would be done to be responsive to the "riches of our Church's liturgical, cultural, racial, generational, linguistic, gender, and ethnic diversity." Among other reasons, proponents cite current poor language translations and use of masculine language for God as reasons to take up this work.

A069 would invite the church to "devote the next triennium to deep engagement with the structure, content, language and theological thrust of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer." Essentially - to study and embrace more fully the resource already available to us.

Columnists for Deputy News wrote five different perspectives calling for action (or inaction) around Prayer Book Revision. Check it out:

Eastern Michigan Deputy Ellen McVey Appointed to Board of Transition Ministry
Gay Jennings appoints Eastern Michigan Deputy to Board
Eastern Michigan deputy Ellen McVey (St. John's, Midland) was appointed to the Board for Transition Ministry during the first legislative session on Thursday morning. President of the House of Deputies Gay Clark Jennings made the appointment and the House of Deputies affirmed.

The Board supports the work of the Office for Transition Ministry, providing support to clergy, laity, bishops, and diocesan transition ministers throughout the Church. They pay attention to trends in clergy calls and congregational data, and provide support to those in search and call processes.

The Way of Love
Bishop Curry announces a new initiative during Convention sermon
During his sermon at the opening Eucharist of the Convention, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry called the Episcopal Church to adopt the Way of Love, a rule of life focused on seven core practices in order to better live out the Jesus Movement in word and action.

Those principles are:
  • TURN - Pause, listen, and chose to follow Jesus.
  • LEARN - Reflect on Scripture each day, especially Jesus' life and teachings.
  • PRAY - Dwell intentionally with God.
  • WORSHIP - Gather in community weekly to thank, praise, and draw near God.
  • BLESS - Share faith and unselfishly give and serve.
  • GO - Cross boundaries, listen deeply, and live like Jesus.
  • REST - Receive the gift of God's grace, peace, and restoration.

Prayer for the General Convention
Almighty and everlasting Father, you have given the Holy Spirit to abide with us for ever: Bless, we pray, with his grace and presence, the bishops and other clergy and the laity assembled in your Name, that your Church, being preserved in true faith and godly discipline, may fulfill all the mind of him who loved it and gave himself for it, your Son Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.
