#GC79 news from the Dioceses of Eastern and Western Michigan.
July 7, 2018

The General Convention is in full swing and has already voted on some resolutions concerning two of the most talked about topics of the convention - prayer book revision and compensation for the president of the House of Deputies.

Beyond legislative responsibilities, the deputations and bishops have participated in two " TEConversations" - one on racial reconciliation and one on evangelism. After hearing from practitioners and artists around these topics, the deputations were led through discussion questions asking them to make personal and diocesan commitments to deepen our work in these areas. There is one remaining TEConversation on Creation Care scheduled to take place on Wednesday, the 11th. The livestreams from these conversations and discussion guides will be available for congregational use.

As always, to keep up with events as they happen, follow the dioceses on Twitter - Eastern MI and Western MI or on Facebook. If you'd like to stay subscribed to regular newsletters but don't want to receive updates from the General Convention, click here.

Updates on the Convention
The House of Deputies Votes to Begin Process of Comprehensive Prayer Book Revision
The resolution will be presented to House of Bishops
The House of Deputies voted on Saturday in support of A068, to begin the process of comprehensive prayer book revision over the next triennium.

The resolution was amended multiple times from the floor of the House, adding a requirement to include Province IX (Spanish-speaking) members to the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music, language around physical ability, availability and quality of translations, and to adhere the committee to the tenets of "The Chicago Lambeth Quadrilateral" (BCP 877-878).

The resolution now goes to the House of Bishops, where it must pass in its entirety, be voted down, or will be revised and returned to the House of Deputies.

General Convention Votes to Compensate the President of the House of Deputies
For the first time, PHoD will be a paid position in the Church
The House of Bishops and House of Deputies have voted to compensate the person holding the position of the President of the House of Deputies according to "director's and officer's fees" with the amount fixed by Executive Council. This vote comes after several triennia in which the House of Deputies voted to compensate and the House of Bishops voted against.

The person currently holding the position is the Rev. Gay Clark Jennings, Deputy from the Diocese of Ohio.

Prayer for the General Convention
Almighty and everlasting Father, you have given the Holy Spirit to abide with us for ever: Bless, we pray, with his grace and presence, the bishops and other clergy and the laity assembled in your Name, that your Church, being preserved in true faith and godly discipline, may fulfill all the mind of him who loved it and gave himself for it, your Son Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.
