#GC79 news from the Dioceses of Eastern and Western Michigan.
July 9, 2018

Sunday was a day of public witness amidst the regular business of the General Convention.

Deputies and Bishops began the day with a Witness Against Gun Violence organized by Bishops Against Gun Violence. We heard from several speakers including a family that lost their child in the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida and a young student that organized in the days following. Here is a video summary of the witness featuring many familiar faces.

From there, many traveled to Hutto Detention Center where women and children are detained after crossing the border seeking asylum. Here's a video summary of the vigil featuring many familiar faces.

The night before, the deputies, bishops, and visitors participated in an Episcopal revival at the Palmer Center. I commend to you Bishop Curry's sermon which, as always, stole the show: watch the video here.

As always, to keep up with events as they happen, follow the dioceses on Twitter - Eastern MI and Western MI or on Facebook. If you'd like to stay subscribed to regular newsletters but don't want to receive updates from the General Convention, click here.

Updates on the Convention
Breaking the Purple Glass Ceiling
Deputies and Bishops wear purple scarves for female bishops
Bishops Cate Waynick (Eastern Michigan) and Whayne Hougland (Western Michigan) were two of hundreds of deputies and bishops donning purple scarves to advocate for more women to be elected to the episcopate.

There are fewer female bishops in the church today than there were several years ago.
Deputy News Special Topic:
Women Discuss #MeToo and the Church
Ahead of resolutions on liturgical language, Truth and Reconciliation task forces, pension considerations, and more, Canon Katie Forsyth sat down with four pairs of women to discuss women in the church - what have we experienced and how might we grow? Watch.
The House of Deputies Pigeon
It's not all business on the floor of the House of Deputies
There is a bird (or two) that makes its home in the space of the House of Deputies that has stolen the show as the unofficial mascot of the convention, even generating it's own Twitter account.

Episcopal Cafe had some fun - check out this interview with the General Convention Pigeon.

Prayer for the General Convention
Almighty and everlasting Father, you have given the Holy Spirit to abide with us for ever: Bless, we pray, with his grace and presence, the bishops and other clergy and the laity assembled in your Name, that your Church, being preserved in true faith and godly discipline, may fulfill all the mind of him who loved it and gave himself for it, your Son Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.
