September 2017
Message from Principal Tennant
We're off to a good start at Glacial Drumlin.  Our first days have been spent getting reacquainted with school routines and community building activities.  We started our Wednesday with Advisory Time by introducing community circles as an opportunity to make connections and establish common ground for character expectations and rules throughout the building.   Community circles are a foundational process for sharing our thoughts, feelings, and ideas as a communication strategy during class time and in the weekly Advisory time on Wednesdays from 8:00-8:30.

During the first quarter all Advisory lessons will focus on our PBIS theme of Responsibility.   Lessons include teaching positive behavior involving student responsibilities for hallway behavior, being prepared for class, and bystander power. These lessons will help staff and students remain mindful about common courtesies and expectations at GDS.  Through these lessons, we're celebrating the power of school community.

This week students also received their Chromebooks.  Students in grades 5 and 6 will keep Chromebooks at school while students in grades 7 & 8 will have the opportunity to take them home.  We appreciate district and community support in making the 1:1 devices a reality for our students this school year.   We are grateful for the financial support available through the school referendum to keep 21st century learning a priority in Monona Grove.

A warm welcome to our new students and staff!  We had 43 new students and 26 new staff.  We hope to make the 2017-18 school year a memorable one for all!

Custodian Appreciation Day
October 2nd is National Custodial Worker's Recognition Day.

Custodial workers operate behind the scenes and are often under-appreciated for the hard work they do day after day keeping schools, clean and well maintained.

Set aside time that day to show appreciation to men and women who keep our schools running smoothly.

PTO News
Glacial Drumlin Holiday Festival Craft Fair
This year's holiday festival craft fair will be  Saturday, December 2, at Glacial Drumlin and again will be organized by the PTO.  There are currently still a few vendor spots left.  If you're interested in being a vendor or volunteer at the event contact John Radovan at  jradovan1@yahoo.com.

Thanks for Back to School Lunch help!
The PTO provides a staff lunch every year prior to the start of the school year.  As always, we have great parent support and serve a fantastic lunch.  The staff always thank us for our conference meals and the back to school lunch.  And we always thank everyone who brings in a donation!

PTO Meetings
PTO meetings are generally held the first Thursday of each month at  6:30 in the GDS Community Room.  Everyone is invited to attend.  It's a great way to meet the principal and get caught up on what's happening in the building.  The meetings for the first part of the year are  September 7October 5November 2.  We don't meet in December - plan to attend the Holiday Fair at GDS instead that month!

Looking for volunteers to help in our garden
In order to keep the community garden at Glacial Drumlin School growing we need volunteers.  Please contact Renee Tennant at 839-8408 if interested in  helping out.

Health Alert Reminder - No Latex
Due to latex allergies among students, staff and visitors of Monona Grove Schools, latex balloons are NOT allowed. Latex Balloons have the biggest health risk for latex allergic people because when the balloon pops, latex particles become airborne and can lead to respiratory distress if breathed in.

Please do not bring Latex balloons into school buildings and grounds. School health office/first aid supplies include non-latex gloves and band aids/tape. For more information click  here.

Summer Reading
On Tuesday, GDS students celebrated their summer reading accomplishments with swimming and pizza.   These students set lofty goals for themselves to prevent summer "brain drain" by reading throughout the lazy days of summer. To celebrate their hard work, they cooled off in the high school pool and then enjoyed the biggest pizza they have ever seen. Good work!
