Getting beyond Survival Mode: How to Parent in the Teen Years

The teen/preteen years are a time of rapid change for kids, and it can be hard for parents to keep pace with the everchanging landscape of their child's life.

Join the Interschool Council on Tuesday, December 10 at 9:30 am at The Academy Building (adjacent to BCMS), for an interactive discussion on how to best support your teen.
LMSD psychologists Craig Cosden (BCMS) and Andrea Fina (Harriton) will cover a broad array of topics including:
--Adolescent development
--Setting priorities and boundaries
--Building self esteem
All parents and guardians in the LMSD are welcome and encouraged to attend.

   Hello Gladwyne Families!

Hope everyone had a fabulous holiday last week. Can you believe we've already wrapped up the first week of December?

Speaking of which... with the season of giving upon us, we hope you'll consider helping out with the following worthy causes.

Blankenburg Elementary -- our sister school in Philadelphia -- desperately needs our help to keep their students warm. To that end, we are collecting donations of hats, gloves and mittens through December 13.

All items must be BRAND NEW with the tags still attached. Just have your child select an item that would fit a similar child of the same gender, then bring it into school and we will help them hang it on a clothesline in the lobby along with their name proudly written on a paper heart.

We are also holding a food drive through December 13 to help those in need.

The most needed items include: Condiments, Assorted Canned Fruit (i.e. peaches/ pineapple/pears/mandarin oranges), Canned Tuna/Salmon/Chicken, Instant Pudding & Jell-O, Cooking Oil, Spaghetti Sauce, Tea, Coffee, Juice Boxes (100 percent juice), Bottle Juice, and Peanut Butter & Jelly.

Also needed:
Toilet Paper, Aluminum Foil, Paper Towels, Dishwashing/Laundry Detergent, Soap, Shampoo/Conditioner.

Items should be sent in with your children and placed in the "Gladwyne Food Drive," bins located at car line, student pick-up and in the school lobby.

The food drive is running at the same time as the Cold Wear Gear Drive. But while the winter gear collected
will go to our sister school in Philadelphia, the food donations will be distributed by three local pantries to homes in our own Main Line community.

Thank you in advance for your support in both of these endeavors. Your generosity is truly appreciated! Please contact Karnit Biran with any questions at [email protected].

A few more quick notes:

Mark your calendars now for the the Gladwyne Elementary School Morning Sports Program, which will begin on Monday, January 6, 2014 and continue through Friday, May 30, 2014.

The program will be held on Monday and Friday mornings from 8:00 am to 8:45 am in the school gym, and is offered to all GES fourth and fifth grade students in order to promote physical activity and sportsmanship in a safe environment.

Fourth graders will attend on Monday mornings, while fifth graders will attend on Fridays. All students are expected to exhibit teamwork and appropriate behavior, and adhere to the rules at all times. No equipment is needed to participate, but students must wear sneakers.

Please note that in the event of a delayed opening due to inclement weather on a Monday and/or a Friday, Morning Sports will be cancelled for that day

And while we're on the subject of our fifth graders...

For all those GES fifth graders looking for a fun challenge, it's almost Reading Olympics time! The sign up deadline is December 13, so please see Mrs. Mastronardo if you have any questions. You can also find more details on her eBoard by clicking here.

Finally... You can now show your Gladwyne Spirit by customizing your own apparel at the GES Online Store. Design your own t-shirts, shorts, blankets, backpacks and hats. Click here to check it out.

Have a great weekend... Go Wolves!

Please Support Cradles to Crayons

The Gladwyne Girl Scouts are holding a clothing drive for Cradles to Crayons. Children's clothes and books in new or excellent condition will be accepted in the Gladwyne lobby from December 9 through December 20. They are especially in need of socks and underwear.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Please contact [email protected] with any questions.
