Gloucester County Recognized for Digital Distinction
Gloucester County was recognized in the top-ten ranking of localities (up to 150,000 population category) for the 2019 Digital Counties Survey conducted by the Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties. Gloucester was one of only six localities in Virginia to be recognized in this category. 
The award recognizes localities for their technology practices including initiatives that streamline delivery of government services, encourage openness/transparency, collaboration and shared services enhance cyber security and contribute to disaster response and recovery efforts.  
“Innovative counties across the U.S. are leveraging technology and data to complete unique projects that better serve citizens, save taxpayer money and protect data,” said Teri Takai, Executive Director of CDG.  “We congratulate this year’s winners for their accomplishments.”
This is the seventh time Gloucester County has been noted for exemplary digital services through the Digital County Survey recognition. The Digital Counties Survey awards are presented in conjunction with the National Association of Counties Annual Conference planned for July.

Your Community Emergency Response Team is a group of community volunteers that learn to:
Manage utilities and put out small fires, provide basic medical aid,
search for and rescue victims safely, and more!
C.E.R.T. is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens may initially be on their own and their actions can make a difference. While people will respond to others in need without the training, one goal of the CERT program is to help them do so effectively and efficiently without placing themselves in unnecessary danger.
C.E.R.T. training is free. The classes are July 27 and 28 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid Training is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) experiencing mental health or addiction challenges or is in crisis. This training is open to the public. Materials will be provided. Bring a brown bag for a working lunch. Registrations will be accepted on a first come first served basis. Substitute - Parent Child Development, leader in Early Childhood Education, West Point is looking for applicants passionate about working with children, have excellent interpersonal skills with children, peers and possess a love for education. You would be assisting the teacher in implementing age-appropriate curriculum for the children in the classroom.

Bus Driver (PT) -This position is responsible for the general transportation needs and safety of all children. Assures safe and punctual transport of all children and adults participating in Parent Child Development program at our 7 locations. Require to comply with all rules as stated in the Regulation of Head Start, Parent Child Development and VA Department of Motor Vehicles policy and procedures. Must be 21 years of age or older. Must maintain 0 or positive points on driving record. Must demonstrate knowledge of proper bus procedures and mechanical operation of vehicles. Must meet all physical, mental, moral and other requirements as set forth by Federal and State Regulations.

SOCCER CAMP
Parks, Recreation and Tourism is sponsoring a Soccer Camps for ages 6-14 the week of July 29-August 1 from 5:30-7:30 pm at Woodville Park. All participants should bring a soccer ball, water, soccer shoes and towel. The fee is $59 and the deadline to register is July 26.
COMPUTER CAMPS
Parks, Recreation and Tourism is sponsoring Computer Camps the week of July 22-25, for ages 8-14 years at T.C. Walker Educational Center. Two sessions are offered: from 9:00 am to Noon ROBLOX Coders and Entrepreneurs and from 1:00-4:00 pm ROBLOX Makers. Each camp is $139 and the deadline to register is July 17.
THE QUILTS OF RIVER COUNTY
Parks, Recreation and Tourism and River Country Quilters will sponsor the Quilts of River Country on Friday, September 20 from Noon to 4:00 pm and Saturday, September 21 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on the Colonial Courtcircle. All Quilters living on the Middle Peninsula or members of a Middle Peninsula guild are invited to show their quilts. Quilt registration forms are available from Parks, Recreation and Tourism. The deadline to register quilts is July 24.  For more information contact Denise Carter, 804-693-1264 or [email protected]
YOGA
Parks, Recreation and Tourism is sponsoring three Yoga Classes. Chair Yoga is held on Mondays and Friday from 11:00 am to noon, the fee is $6 per class. Namaste Yoga is held on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:45 pm at the Whitcomb Lodge. The fee is $6 per class of $5 with a 5 or 10 class punchcard.

Back to School Gloucester
A Community Supported effort to help those children in need
At the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year, this community initiative launched for the first time and helped over 200 kids in this community obtain the supplies they needed to return to school. 
WE ARE PLANNING TO DO IT AGAIN!
In a partnership between Connected Communities, G.U.E.S.T and the amazing Churches in this community we will work over the next 8 weeks to collect as many school supplies as possible. These supplies will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis to children in need that stem from kindergarten through 12 th Grade. All donations all tax deductible and will go directly to this back to school initiative. This is not only a great mission, but a great influence!
