Gloucester Arts on Main to present "The Story of a True Likeness"

Gloucester Arts on Main will present "A True Likeness," the story of the discovery and recovery of Richard Samuel Roberts' work Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. Phil Dunn, co-editor of the book, will share slides and stories of his extensive time with Roberts' work.

Dunn is a retired professor of art at the University of South Carolina and a professional photographer living in Mathews.

Roberts' work, nearly 4,000 glass plate negatives, sat in a dark, dusty crawlspace seemingly forgotten for half a century.

The event is free and open to the public. A cash bar will be available.
Members Sought for County Transportation Committee
Gloucester County is seeking members for its newly-formed Transportation Committee and will take inquires through March 1, 2020. The committee is being established by Gloucester’s county administrator to advise county staff on transportation needs related to safety, efficiency, and future growth patterns. This committee will work closely with planning staff and the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) who are currently preparing a comprehensive transportation plan for the County. The HRTPO has completed the analysis and data gathering phase of the plan and have produced draft recommendations based on that analysis. The plan includes evaluation of roadway characteristics, congestion, commuting patterns, safety, public transportation, freight/truck traffic, bridges, active transportation, and resiliency/sea level rise. The next step is to obtain public input on the data and identify improvement needs and priorities based on safety, efficiency, and future growth patterns.

Five individuals, ideally with transportation or active transportation experience, are to be appointed by the county administrator. The meetings will be held monthly or every other month depending on the desires of the committee, with additional meetings scheduled as needed. Once the committee has made its recommendations to the Planning Commission, it is likely that the committee will be disbanded unless the county administrator desires additional input on transportation issues.

If interested, complete a Volunteer Board Bank interest form by visiting www.gloucesterva.info or calling the Department of Community Engagement at 804-693-5730. If you have any questions regarding the plan, please contact Carol Rizzio - Senior Comprehensive Planner, or Anne Ducey-Ortiz - Planning, Zoning, and Environmental Programs Director at 804-693-1224.
