GMHS partners with Gloucester County to make a difference in the lives of homeless dogs
 
Dogs that are staying at Gloucester’s Animal Shelter now have a new outdoor space to walk and play thanks to a $14,000 grant afforded to Gloucester’s Animal Control department from the GloucesterMathews Humane Society. 

County seeks volunteers for local committees 

There are several volunteer opportunities available for Gloucester residents interested in serving their community. Gloucester County is looking for citizens to serve on several local committees, as there are a number of vacancies and not enough people to fill them.

The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors regularly seeks citizens on these board-appointed groups that advise and assist the governing body with many aspects of County government. Currently, volunteers are needed to serve on the Board of Social Services, the Historical Committee, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (representative needed from the Abingdon Magisterial District), the Utilities Advisory Committee (representative needed from the York Magisterial District) and countywide residents to serve on the Telecommunications Committee.

If interested in becoming involved in local government and helping to serve the community, consider submitting your information to the Gloucester County Volunteer Board Bank, which provides members of the board of supervisors with the names and background information of interested citizens. New classes available at Nonprofit Management Institute
New classes of the 2020 Nonprofit Management Institute at Thomas Nelson Community College (Williamsburg campus) have started! TRAINING FUNDS and NetworkPeninsula member discounts are also available! 

All classes are open to nonprofit staff, board members, and anyone interested in developing and/or improving their skills in the nonprofit sector. Classes are $85 per class ($75 for NetPen members). Participants can take classes individually or work toward various Certificate Programs, as well as the overall Certificate in Nonprofit Management.

Free Public Medicare Basics Meeting to be held in Yorktown

Sentara Optima Health will be offering an informational meeting about the different types of Medicare coverage March 16, 2020 at the Tabb Library, 100 Long Green Blvd., Yorktown.

The meeting will also provide information on how to determine what coverage is right for you; how and when to enroll in Medicare, tips about delaying enrollment past the age of 65, recent changes to Medicare and other resources to learn more about Medicare. For more information, call 757-687-6450.
