Thinking Out of the Box
Our brains and past successes may actually be working against us, today.
I teach a psychology class at Ivy Tech Community College. I do it because I enjoy sharing the many different perspectives, theories, and concepts of psychology with undergraduates. One of those concepts, which comes from cognitive psychology, is problem-solving. Specifically, barriers to problem-solving. One of those barriers is called a mental set .  A mental set is basically a set of behaviors that have been used to solve a problem in one's past. When actions solve a problem for us once, our brains develop
behavioral scripts based on successes and we tend to go back to those scripts to solve problems in the present. Unfortunately, this can lead to our inability to recognize and exploit new opportunities that may be presented by the problem we're trying to solve. What has worked for us in the past doesn't always work for the problems we have in the present.  Read more

Teacher and Staff Appreciation

As a valued member of our community, Community Commitment to Education wanted to inform you of our new initiative, Teacher and Staff Appreciation. Through this initiative, businesses will partner with area schools during the month February to show their appreciation for educators and school staff in our community. After discussing with school officials, February proves to be a challenging month for teachers. The holiday season is over, Spring Break is around the corner, and the testing window is not far out. It is our goal to provide teachers and school staff with additional community appreciation during this challenging time.

What are we asking of you and your business? A business partnership will consist of showing appreciation for school staff in a variety of ways. It could be as simple as having your staff members write thank you notes to the educators and school staff and hand delivering them or setting up a coffee bar in the teacher lounge. Your business can choose either a one time token of appreciation or multiple during the month of February 2019. We ask that you select a school by January 15th.  Please visit:  https://uwlafayettevolunteer.galaxydigital.com/manager/aem/edit/?doc_id=5314 where you can browse the schools and the number of teachers and additional support staff per school. If you are interested in partnering with another business to share a school please contact Ashley Biesemeier at [email protected] or 765-742-9077 x233. Under each school you will also see a variety of ideas but please do not let this limit you. Feel free to be creative with your staff. It is our hope that you encourage your staff to visit the school as well. Whether you are hand delivering note cards or personally delivering donuts, your commitment to education is truly valued by our schools.
We look forward to partnering with you on our mission to show community support for our educators and supporting staff.
