I will start out this months newsletter with an apology. It has been 11 months since I last sent out a newsletter and for that I am very sorry. I will try to do better in the future.
If you look at the picture above you will see five men who had just received their Journeyman Machine Rebuilding card from International Harvester. This picture was taken in 1954 and is significant for two reasons. First this trade does not even exist anymore and second, two of the founders of H&W are in the picture. Herb West is standing on the left end of the top row and Dick Mueller is on the left side of the front row. As many of you know, Dick is my father and he raised all of his sons (5 of us) to be hard working men. He instilled in me the value of good hard physical work, to treat everyone in a kind and respectful way and most of the values I hold dear today. He also encouraged me to join the H&W family and taught me the rebuilding trade. He is now 84 years old and is living with cancer through out his body. in typical Dick fashion, he has already out lived the doctors prediction of 2 to 3 months. He is now into his 5th month and still going! He has a great attitude and wanted me to thank all of you for allowing him the opportunity to come and work in many of your shops (mostly the local Fort Wayne Area).
Our webmaster, Virginia has been hard at work updating and adding to our offerings. She has developed a new web site,
www.hwmachinerepair.com This site is more informational in nature but has many links to our original site,
www.machinerypartsdepot.com where you go to order parts online.
We do our best to add new videos to our YouTube channel on a regular basis and you can check out all our videos on our channel by clicking
HERE.
This months article is a return by popular demand. We will be removing a spindle from a Bridgeport mill without disassembly of the head. If you would like to watch me completing the task in video form you can click
HERE to watch it.
We are highlighting our Refurbished Bridgeport Head Trade-in Program this month. If you have a Series I Bridgeport with a 1hp J-Head, 1-1/2 or 2hp 2J Head we offer a program where we will send you a reworked head and you will send us your like head back in as a core. The cost for this service is $1,950.00 plus your core for 2J Heads (1-1/2 & 2HP VS Heads) and $1,650.00 plus your core for J-Heads (*certain exceptions apply, call for details). You can call our staff at 800-285-5271 to get all the details on this exciting program. We also offer a complete Bridgeport mill trade-in program!
We also have several other items on special below. Most of them are out of the quarterly sales catalog we send out with each order.
Give us a call at 800-285-5271 if you are needing any service, parts, tooling or accessories for your equipment and we will do our best to make sure you are taken care of.
Have a wonderful holiday,
Barry, Debbi, Virginia, Nicole, Heather and the rest of the gang.

R-8 Spindle Removal
|
|
This month we will be going to be removing an R-8 Spindle Assembly from the mill without doing a complete disassembly of the head. We will be showing you the step by step instructions but we also have a video of this procedure on our you tube channel you can watch by clicking HERE All words in blue are Clickable Links
1. Lower the quill about one inch using the Quill Feed Handle and engage the Quill Lock. This will expose the Set Screw that is located on the back side of the quill.
2. Identify the home position of the Nose Piece to the Quill by putting an alignment mark across both the Quill and the Nose Piece. You can use a sharpe or other marker for the line (Do NOT use a scribe, you do not want to scratch you quill). There are some occasions that when you reinstall the spindle the Nose Piece will travel past the line. That is okay, it just means the nose piece was not in the exact correct position at the start.
 3. Using a
1/8" Allen Wrench, remove the
Nose Piece
Set Screw. It is located on the back of the quill about 3/8 of an inch above the gap between the Quill and the
Nose Piece.
 4. Using a
two pin spanner wrench remove the
Nose Piece by turning it counter clockwise (NOTE: some import mills are threaded left hand). If the Nose Piece is tight you may need to use a hammer to get the Nose Piece started.
 5. Once you have the
Nose Piece off the Quill, release the quill lock and return the Quill to the full up position, reengage the
quill lock.
6. Lower the table to a point where the
Spindle Assembly can be safely removed (about 24" from the table to the spindle).
7. Place a piece of wood or other soft material on the table top as a safety in case the spindle should fall unexpectedly.
 8. This is where another pair of hands would be a big help. With the drawbar in place begin to tap it down with a dead blow hammer (we use the
Trusty Cook #3). This will drive the
Spindle Assembly down through the head. (you may need to remove the
Drawbar and use a brass or aluminum bar as the drawbar head is too large for the spindle spline).
NOTE: The spindle will reach a point where it will fall, make sure someone is there to catch the spindle before it hits the table.
You have now successfully removed the
Spindle Assembly from the head! Next month we will be discussing the installation of your new spindle bearings. If you have any questions about this article or any other machine repair questions you can contact me at
barry@hwmachinerepair.com or call us at (800) 285-5271.

Become or fan on Facebook
I have been using Facebook for a few years to keep in touch with family and friends around the world but have recently seen many companies turn to this as an area of keeping in contact with customers. After looking into it I found that we could start a
H&W Machine Repair & Rebuilding Inc. Facebook Page. The thing I like most about the page is the discussion board. If you have a questions we can answer them through the board. We will also use it to provide updates to our products and services and well as tips to help you keep your machinery running smoother. If you would like to become a "fan" of our company just click the link in the quick links section of the newsletter, once you are directed to our page you automatically become a member of our community.
