HHLT is excited to participate in Snapshot NY, a new citizen science program launched by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) in collaboration with Cornell University. This innovative program invites volunteers to help monitor wildlife populations across New York State using trail cameras, and we need your help right here on our preserves!
Why This Matters? Trail cameras capture incredible glimpses into the hidden lives of wildlife in local areas. The data collected through Snapshot NY helps DEC biologists make informed decisions about wildlife conservation and management while tracking population changes over time. By monitoring wildlife on HHLT preserves and in our region, we'll be contributing to both local conservation efforts and a statewide dataset that will shape the future of wildlife management in New York.
It's Easy and Rewarding! Trail cameras detect heat and motion, automatically photographing passing animals. You'll be amazed at what shows up! To participate, HHLT volunteers will receive mapping coordinates to trail cameras located on HHLT preserves and work with HHLT staff to upload images to the Snapshot platform. Your role includes replacing SD cards and batteries to keep the cameras running, reviewing images to identify wildlife, uploading footage to the app, and scouting new camera locations based on field observations.
This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the outdoors, contribute directly to wildlife conservation, and discover what's happening in local forests when we're not looking.
