Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of King Kamehameha's Passing
Ahu`ena Heiau Inc. has initiated planning efforts to commemorate the 200th anniversary of King Kamehameha the Great's passing at Ahu`ena on Kamakahonu Bay in Historic Kailua Village.
Starting at 5:00 am on Wednesday, May 8, a procession of chanters and Hawaiian royal societies will walk along Alii Drive from Hale Halawai leading to a sunrise (5:55 am) ceremony with appropriate protocols at Ahu`ena Heiau. The procession will face Hualalai with the Royal Order of Kamehameha I Moku o Kona chanting E Ala E at sunrise. Presentation of ho'okupu will follow. Spend a picture perfect Sunday afternoon at Kokua Kailua with local vendors, artists and musicians in Historic Kailua Village. On Sunday, April 14, Alii Drive is the place to be from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm for a festive, pedestrian-only outdoor marketplace that makes for a great family friendly experience. Don't forget there's free Hawaiian entertainment at Hulihee Palace starting at 4:00 pm too.
Hawaiian Sunset Saturday
Celebrate Kona's spectacular sunset with live Hawaiian music and beautiful hula performed by Halau Ka'eaikahelelani on Saturday, April 27 at Coconut Grove Marketplace on Alii Drive from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
Bring a lawn chair or beach mat. No coolers please.
