The Kailua Village Business Improvement District recently awarded nine $1,000 mini grants for façade improvements in Historic Kailua Village. Two of the awardees include Hulihe'e Palace and Hale Halawai. Hulihe'e Palace installed new planter boxes on the rock wall fronting the gift shop to brighten up its appearance. Hale Halawai also built new planter boxes filled with flowers to make the entrance to the park more attractive.
Other façade mini grant awardees include Mokuaikaua Church, Island Style Triathlon Gift Shop, Paradise Brewing Company, Big Island Running Company, Kalikala Cuisine, Gertrude's Jazz Bar and Ronald Hirata, DMD MS.
You may have noticed an increased presence of Kailua Village Business Improvement District's Security Ambassadors in their new uniforms on foot and on bikes in the Village. The Security Ambassadors are walking and on bikes in the Village during the daytime hours starting at 7 am and in a roving vehicular patrol until 11 pm at night. The Security Ambassadors are trained on panhandling, loitering protocols and best practices and have also gone through 4 hours of Mental Health Awareness Training. They do daily homeless counts, identify hot spots and areas of need and collaborate with the Hawaii County Police Department and the Community Policing Officers.
In 2019, KVBID's Security Ambassadors returned 524 shopping carts and removed over 2,561 poster, stickers and graffiti in the Village. They issued 430 open container warnings and assisted visitors and locals 2,407 times.
