HT TO HOLD ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER
AUSTIN -- On Saturday, October 27, Huston-Tillotson University will hold its biggest annual fundraiser at the JW Marriott at 6:00 p.m. It is Huston-Tillotson’s Scholarship Gala, this year, featuring GRAMMY Award-winning Gary Clark, Jr. and local artist, The Peterson Brothers. Sponsorships, tables, and individual tickets are available now via the University’s website at htu.edu (click the photo above) or by calling 512.505.3073 or emailing htgala@htu.edu

Proceeds from the Gala help close the funding gap for students, effectively removing financial barriers that otherwise would cause students to end their college years suddenly.

For 143 years, Huston-Tillotson has received support from many individuals who believe in the University’s mission of nurturing a legacy of leadership and excellence in education, connecting knowledge, power, passion, and values. Huston-Tillotson’s legacy includes graduates with careers in corporate America, science, education, sports, medicine, law, and much more, including owning businesses. And many of these professionals entered Huston-Tillotson as first-generation college students, students who were the first in their family to attend college.

Today, Huston-Tillotson continues to make such history in families from across America and internationally right here in East Austin. With a rich history in East Austin as the community’s “intellectual heartbeat,” the University attracts students with daring dreams, pivoting the University to expansion, such as a new campus in East Austin for its Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, opening later this year. Huston-Tillotson also hit another milestone this year with the 2018 freshman class being the largest since 2010, ultimately increasing Huston-Tillotson’s enrollment to more than 1,100 students.

Financial support for the Gala helps position the University to provide scholarships to more students, thus lifting more families out of binds that only an education can do.

Huston-Tillotson looks forward to the special evening of celebration in October that also will feature an exclusive video of Huston-Tillotson’s everyday story told by current students. The University will recognize three partners, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Merck, and HomeAway.  Additionally, there will be an auction of some impressive gifts, including a trip and an all-inclusive Austin package, to name a few. Rounding out the evening will be an after-party with entertainment by The Peterson Brothers. HT-UT ROTC CONDUCTS TRAINING EXERCISES ON HT'S CAMPUS
Whitworth and Moore shake hands, resembling the University's seal.
AUSTIN -- Huston-Tillotson University partners with the University of Texas at Austin to offer military science courses. On September 6, the ROTC conducted laboratory exercises on Huston-Tillotson’s campus. Huston-Tillotson’s cadets Kelly Moore and Johnathan Whitworth were able to step away for a moment to share about their journey to date.
First Sergeant Moore of Norfolk, Virginia aspires to be an officer, either second lieutenant or quartermaster in logistics or supply officer in the U.S. Army. After she enlisted, she was a sergeant - HR specialist.

“Since I aspire to be an officer, I returned to school, and I chose Huston-Tillotson University,” Sergeant Moore said. “Being in ROTC (and the military, in general) has grown me a lot and given me an opportunity to juggle a lot of responsibilities that I wasn’t really used to in the past. It’s also good being a student at Huston-Tillotson University and to experience life away from the Army. I get to see how regular students live and experience a civilian life.”

Second Lieutenant Whitworth of Shelby, North Carolina was a sergeant, first class, active duty, before coming to Huston-Tillotson. He aspires to become an 06 (Colonel). “I will reach for the stars to get there,” Whitworth emphasized.

“I love HT. It’s Austin’s biggest kept secret and an HBCU,” he said. “With me being an older cadet here, with kids of my own, it is enlightening. It’s been challenging as a 34-year-old getting back into the college realm, but it opens my eyes to how much I have grown. Here at HT, I don’t have to go too far for my classes, and the cost is kept down. I can get a quality education. I can relate to the education here because of the cultural experience and the professors. The professors just don’t teach the class; they make you use things that you can apply in life." HT
Whitworth stands at rest.
Moore gives orders to fellow cadets.

A ‘SPARK’ OF HOPE FOR SURVIVORS LIKE ME
Jenkins
DURHAM, NC -- A bright soul in a dark place. A college cheerleader full of spirit, full of hope, no worries other than nailing the cheer routines and every college class test. But April-Autumn Jenkins never knew that she would face the test of power, physical power, a male college athlete who would soon change her life forever. Jenkins became a victim of sexual assault, and nobody believed her story. Her life was ripped apart with a resulting, unplanned child, alcoholism, and a loss of mind, literally. But today, this Duke University Women’s Center’s therapist and motivational speaker is speaking out. She is saving others because “Huston-Tillotson saved me.” She is on a mission to lift other victims, primarily black girls, out of their dark places.
