Longhorn Sighting: Ho-Ho-Horn!

Larry Lonero,
President of ITLA
Merry Christmas!

As we wind down 2013 and get ready for 2014, the ITLA is also winding down the Free Registration and Transfer program. To say it was an overwhelming success is an understatement! During the six-month program we registered/transferred over 6,000 animals FOR FREE. We also had hundreds of breeders purchase new memberships in either the ITLA or the TLMA (a requirement of the offer if you weren't already a member).

Most pleasing to me was the fact that we had many TLBAA and TLMA members take advantage of the free offer and register cattle with the ITLA for the first time. This is important as the ITLA has always tried to position itself as an all inclusive organization promoting industry unity. While this free registration/transfer offer is ending (and we certainly can't offer it indefinitely!) we will continue to find ways to bring value to our members. And we will continue to lead the industry in welcoming cattle registered in all registries to our events.

Speaking of offering value, did you know that the ITLA offers all of it's members a FREE advertisement on the Members page of our website at ITLA.com? All you need to do to have your free advertisement run is to call or email the office. You can custom create content advertising your ranch, your bull or whatever you would like. We have always offered this benefit and will continue to do so FREE OF CHARGE. As I have asked before, "What is your Association doing for you?"

I'm excited to announce that the ITLA is presenting yet another ITLA Judge's Clinic Webinar on February 4th and 11th, 2014. If you have never attended one of our judging clinics I highly recommend it. They have proven to be very popular within the industry. Our previous webinar had participants from thee different continents. The webinar participants are Darol Dickinson, Lana Hightower and one other ITLA approved breeder/judge to be announced. Both Darol and Lana are highly respected judges of cattle by breeders from all registries. We have invited all TLBAA members and leadership to participate. Please don't miss the opportunity to attend this webinar. Call the ITLA office for details.

In closing, I want to thank Trish David (ITLA Office Manager) and our entire staff for their yeoman's work in managing the over 6,000 new registration that have come in over the past few months. We heaped the work on them and, as usual, answered the call with outstanding attitude and customer service!

I hope you all have a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year!

Larry Lonero

Texas Longhorns featured in Fund Raiser

Country music superstar George Strait and Texas businessman Tom Cusick hosted their third annual Vaqueros del Mar Invitational Golf Tournament and Auction at Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort & Spa in Boerne, Texas.

Strait and Cusick, who are joint owners of the resort and spa, first created the fundraiser in November 2011 to support wounded U.S. servicemen and women. This year's event benefited Feherty's Troops First Foundation, an organization that provides meaningful assistance to military members who have been wounded serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Photo credit: Terry Calonge/Richards and Southern Inc
The weekend-long event was filled with non-stop excitement, kicking off with a roping competition at Cusick's exclusive Texas Hill Country community Estancia at Thunder Valley, just minutes from the resort.

Strait participated in the roping event, and Norma Strait and Silvia Cusick made a grand entrance by riding into the rodeo arena on a pair of Texas Longhorn bulls.

More than 450 invited guests also participated in a high-energy live auction, which raised an impressive $425,000 within a half-hour. At one point, Strait even sweetened the pot by removing his boots and offering them as part of a package deal, which sold for $130,000 alone.

An invitation to all Texas Longhorn owners and breeders....

Hi, Folks!

Randy Witte_2012
Randy Witte of Peyton, CO
President, MSTLA

The National Western Texas Longhorn Show Committee cordially invites all ITLA and TLBAA members and their cattle to participate in the 2014 National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. The Texas Longhorn show will be held Friday and Saturday, January 24-25, in the National Western's Stockyards Arena.

This show is historic in that it represents a joint effort by regional affiliates of both the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America(TLBAA) and the International Texas Longhorn Association(ITLA)-that's the Mountain and Plains Texas Longhorn Association (MPTLA) and the Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association (MSTLA) respectively. Our judge is the well known and respected Lana Hightower, currently a director in TLBAA and an ITLA-certified judge.

For additional information: Lana Pearson, 719-740-0741.

Hope to see you in Denver!

Sincerely,

Season's Greetings to all from Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association

logo_ORVTLA.JPGThe fall meeting of Ohio River valley was held on Sunday afternoon October 27 at Bob Snyders office, Granville, Ohio. Those there enjoyed a desert bar made up of deserts usually common to this time of the year.

Bob Snyder gave the Treasurer's report and a detailed report on the expenses and income of this years show, this year was one of the better years in awhile seeing an increase in the number of cattle shown, number of youth who showed, and more income from the show.

Ed Callan handed out the show awards to those present and gave his final thoughts as this years show chair, thanking all of those who helped with the success of the show.

New business included taking a vote to adopt the new logo that we have been taking for a test drive this year that was designed by Andy Dunmire. Fund raiser ideas were presented by Kari Norris like continuing with Bovine Bingo again next year, also doing a hide or skull mount raffle, and some other ideas were also kicked around.

It was announced that Andrew Morris will assume the duties of getting things together for our attendance at the 2014 Ohio Cattleman's Beef Expo, and that Barry Elam and Tim Mills will co-chair our 2014 show.

Our 2014 Field Day will be held jointly with one of the Roping Horse Associations here in Ohio, this group of ropers has over 100 members, they will share with us what happens with your calves as far as the training that takes place after you sell calves as ropers and they start their new job. We look forward to learning more about this market for some of the calves we don't want to keep to adults.

Abby Morris gave us a short lesson on using the new E-Register said it was very user friendly, we also reminded people to get the E-Drover if they are not already, and to contact Trish at the ITLA office for that.

Members will be ask to send photos they would like to share of their Longhorns in to be used to put together a cd slide show of Texas Longhorn cattle that we would like to play during the 2014 Beef Expo, those photos should be sent to Tim Mills In jpeg format if possible.

And wrapping up ,we will be working on getting our Face Book page running over the winter.

Next meeting will be Sunday January 12th at 2 p.m. Bob Snyders office Granville, Ohio, we will be electing one director at this meeting.

Season's Greetings to all from Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association!

Mountain States Affiliate (MSTLA) Holds Annual Christmas Party and Elections

The Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association held its Annual Christmas party in conjunction with their annual election of officers this past Saturday, at the Mozaic Restaurant at the Inn at Palmer Divide, Palmer Lake, CO.

The day was cold and snowy, but members of the Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association braved the elements to attend their annual Christmas party and meeting on Saturday, December 7, at the Mosaic Restaurant near Palmer Lake, Colorado. The group included (back row from left) Kenny Richardson, Randy Witte, Joe Brundage, Josh Miller, Kay and Gary Cole and John Nelson. Middle row from left are Stan and Lorna Searle, Sherry Brundage, Katie Belle Miller, Barb Fillmore and Darlene Nelson. Front, seated, are Karen Richardson and Lana Pearson.

Newly elected officers:
Clyde Peek of Franktown, CO succeeds Randy Witte as president.  Vice President is Gary Cole of Penrose, CO.  Re-elected officers were:  Darlene Nelson of Wellington, CO as treasurer, and Ginny Peek, secretary.  Elected as Directors were John Nelson and Randy Witte, who join Art Caldwell of Canon City,CO  Ron Jones of Salida and Gary Lake of Ellicott on the Board of Directors.
Judge Lana Hightower

Principal topic of discussion at the annual meeting and Christmas luncheon was the upcoming National Western Texas Longhorn Show to be held Jan. 24-25 in Denver, Colorado.

Cattle from both ITLA and TLBAA registries will be eligible, with points to be awarded in each association's qualifying system.   Lana Hightower of Van, TX will judge the two-day event.  The show committee, chaired by Randy Witte, includes Gary Cole; Gary Lake; John Nelson; Lana Pearson, of Fowler, CO and MPTLA president Kenny Richardson of Greeley, CO.

2013:  UT research traces Longhorn cattle history to Middle East and India
Few things are as symbolic of the Lone Star State as the Texas Longhorn. The cattle's legacy is rich and deep, spanning centuries - and even continents. Photo: RON T. ENNIS, MBR / FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM
DNA analysis at University of Texas traces storied breed to first cattle in New World

New DNA analysis shows that Texas Longhorns are direct descendants of the first cattle introduced to the New World, shipped in by Christopher Columbus in 1493.

Although brought from Spain via the Canary Islands, the breed had an international heritage, with roots in the Middle East and India.

These findings come from research at the University of Texas in Austin, by graduate student Emily Jane McTavish and biology professor David Hillis, along with researchers at the University of Missouri.

Their study of the genome of Longhorns and related breeds was published this week in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences."

It's the most comprehensive study of Longhorns' DNA and the first that reveals their complex ancestry, McTavish said.

Only buffalo roamed

The cattle that Columbus brought on his second voyage to various Caribbean islands were the first cows anywhere in the Western Hemisphere.

"It's really crazy," McTavish said. "Even just thinking about that, they're such a part of the environment now.  Before Columbus came, there were buffalo but no cattle at all."

The Spaniards shipped cattle to the New World for about 20 years, but after 1512, those cows became an isolated group for the next 200 years or so, said McTavish, a doctoral student in ecology, evolution and behavior.

Cattle arrived in the area that would become Texas in the late 1600s.

McTavish, who grew up in suburban New York City, came to UT in 2007 to study evolutionary biology with Hillis, Her focus at that point was toads and salamanders.

She got interested in cattle partly because they're "amazing, beautiful, cool animals," and partly because agricultural research on cattle has produced a large database with a lot of genetic information.

"I said, 'Neat, I can use this same data to look at the evolutionary history,'" she recalled.

Hillis, who has a ranch, said he started raising Longhorn cattle because they are part of the state's fabric and history.

Breed's diverse origins

While living here in feral herds, these cattle developed their distinctive horns, which protected their young from predators such as mountain lions, wolves, coyotes and bears, Hillis said.

"There was strong selection for animals with longer horns, which were better to defend their calves," he said. "They had a lot of genetic variation available for that selection, in part because of their diverse origins."  (cont'd)

Chewing the Cud...

Two old cowboys were chewin' the fat on the porch, and Ol' Red looked down and shook his head.

"I shore feel sorry for Manuel, down at the feed store, his dogs must got fleas real bad."

"Why's that, Red?" Said Jim Bob.

"Well, I done bought my hay from him and then told him Merry Christmas...and all he could say in reply was 'Fleas on my dog'.  Must be weighin' on him something fierce, but he still had a smile on his face when he said it."

"Ha!" chuckled Jim Bob.  He was just a-wishin' you a Merry Christmas in Spanish...he was sayin' 'Feliz Navidad'."

"Ok, well, tell me this, Mr. Perfessor...did you know them three wise fellers were firemen?"

"What?  Now, why would you say that, Red?"

"It says right there in the good book that they just come from a 'far'."
