Around the Campfire
WOW! We are just back from Oklahoma City and the first ever Texas Longhorn Extravaganza. What a spectacular event. The testimonials are still coming in from people who attended and were pleased with the experience. We will share some of them with you later in this issue.
Like many, I have been in the Texas Longhorn industry approaching 20 years and I have attended most of the big events over that time. But, I have never attended an industry event with so much to offer our breeders. The Extravaganza offered the opportunity for Texas Longhorn enthusiasts to experience every aspect of the breed. If you had a particular interest you could experience it, plus many more. It offered excellent seminars, official business meetings of the organizations, ITLA's first ever Awards Breakfast, ITLA's Championship Show, along with TLMA's Longhorn World Championship (LWC) Horn Measurement, high quality sale, and awards banquet.
But, most significant, because of the breadth of activities it offered Texas Longhorn breeders the chance to come together, share their diverse interests, enjoy each other's excitement, and build new relationships. I believe most people who came looking for a great time, found it. I know I did.
I want to take just as minute here to thank every one of the many people who worked so hard to make this historic event a success, those that contributed financially to its success through sponsorships, and all of you who made it successful by your personal attendance and participation. Many participants traveled long distances, lured by its grandeur, to be part of this wonderful event. Every one of you that I just described should be proud of what we did as an industry. We came together, enjoyed a wide range of Texas Longhorn related activities, enjoyed each other's company, had FUN, and overcame a few challenges that any first time event of this scope is bound to experience. Even those experiences will help us be better next time.
A very special thing happened at this event that would not otherwise have occurred. Through the special efforts of many special contributors the ITLA raised the funds necessary to retire our building note.
We set new trends. We had twice as many registrants for the ITLA Convention as we have recently, entries in our Championship Show were up significantly, we filled the banquet room at the Skirvin Hotel to capacity for our first ever ITLA Awards Breakfast.
In closing, I want to extend a special thanks to Wes Chancey, the Board and Staff at the TLMA for our partnership on this great industry event and for the great job they did. While a lot of folks at ITLA worked hard to give you a memorable experience, I can't close without thanking our office staff, Trish David and Robin Hancock, for their great work; Larry Lonero for managing the Championship Show; and Robyn Lonero for coordinating the Convention and Awards Breakfast.
Look for the special stories in this issue of the E-Drover and in upcoming issues of the Texas Longhorn Journal.
Best regards,
Roger Hutton
President, ITLA

Breakfast of Champions Features Awards
by Larry Lonero
Over 200 ITLA and TLMA members attended the first ever Breakfast of Champions held at the Hilton Skirvin Hotel during the Texas Longhorn Extravaganza.
The Breakfast of Champions kicked off the busiest day of the three-day Extravaganza that included the breakfast, the LWC horn measurement activities, the ITLA Convention and Championship Show and concluded with the LWC Awards banquet Saturday night, also held at the Hilton Skirvin hotel.
Breakfast of Champions attendees enjoyed a Native American dance troupe presented by Native American students from Oklahoma State University.
| Randy Sutton |
Presentations of several awards to prominent members took place during the "Breakfast of Champions."
The Jim Palmer Breed Promotion Award is given annually "to recognize outstanding skill and imagination in creating positive awareness of the Texas Longhorn breed." Association President Roger Hutton made the presentation this year to Randy Sutton. Randy and his wife Pat own Blue Ridge Longhorns in Blue Ridge Summit, PA. They have been active in both the ITLA and the Northeast Texas Longhorn Association for many years.
| Kelly and Butch Geurin |
Butch and Kelly Geurin were honored as Pioneer Breeders . The father-son team operates Mountain Creek Longhorns at Saint Jo, TX. They are both legendary breeders of exceptional cattle and providers of A.I. and embryo transfer services.
John Stockton has been known for many years as a producer of reputation Texas Longhorns and this year was the recipient of the Happy Shahan Breeder of the Year Award. John and his wife Helen operate the Stockton Ranches with longtime associates, Bill and Susan Burton, near Cleveland, TX.

Each year ITLA singles out individuals who have been diligently working to promote the Texas Longhorn breed through the Association's regional affiliates. This year's Unsung Hero Awards went to members of three affiliates.
Kris Ruppert of Lewisberry, PA was honored for her contributions to the organization and fellow producers. She is a dedicated member of the Northeast Texas Longhorn Association (NETLA).
Bob Snyder of Double R Longhorns located at Marysville, OH was selected as an "Unsung Hero" for his service to the industry, as well as his successful breeding program. He was nominated by the Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association (ORVTLA).
John and Darlene Nelson were chosen for their efforts with the Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association (MSTLA), of which Darlene serves as Treasurer and John is a Director. They played a key role in organizing the successful High Plains Texas Longhorn Sale, held each May in Ft. Collins, CO, as well as serving as secretary and announcer for the Heart of the Rockies show.
| Darol and Linda Dickinson | In addition to the annual awards, ITLA presented the Charles Goodnight Award, a special honor that has only been accorded three others in the 20 years since it was established. Darol Dickinson of Barnesville, OH, a past president of ITLA and veteran producer was selected for the honor. The inscription on the laser-etched hardwood plaque reads: "In Recognition of his Generous Service to the Texas Longhorn Industry, DAROL DICKINSON is Included in the Annals of the Breed, along with an Earlier Longhorn Cattleman, Charles Goodnight." The presentation ceremony included Dolores Anthony, wife of the late Bill Anthony, the first recipient of the Charles Goodnight Award and Stan Searle. The late Jerry Williams and Searle were the other earlier honorees. Dickinson Cattle Co. was also recognized for outstanding contribution to the Association and the Texas Longhorn breed by generating the most registrations and the most transfers. DCCI was also credited with having recruited the most new members into ITLA during the past year.

Event planning and coordination was under the direction of Robyn Lonero, along with ITLA staff members Trish David and Robin Hancock, and greatly assisted by a host of generous volunteers, mostly from the state of Oklahoma.
"The Breakfast of Champions was such a novel and refreshing event. It was gratifying to see so many people together to start our final day. The Skirvin Hotel was the perfect venue," remarked ITLA President Roger Hutton. |

| ITLA Headquarters Paid Off! Contributed by Randy Witte
There were many great moments during the World Championship Convention and Show, and one of them came when the Association raised $20,500 from membership donations-enough money to completely pay off the mortgage on the association's building, in Glen Rose, Texas.
Gary Bruch of the Best of Trails Texas Longhorn Association (BOTTLA) and past ITLA president, from Strong City, KS telephoned Stan Searle, who is outgoing ITLA vice president from Monument, CO. Gary mentioned that the BOTTLA had gradually built up a nest-egg of funds derived from its twice-a-year Longhorn sale at the MO KAN Livestock Market in Passaic, MO. Gary then offered on behalf of the affiliate to match donations, dollar-for-dollar, "'til the building mortgage was paid off."
The proposal to raise funds during the Oklahoma City convention was announced Saturday morning at the association's Breakfast of Champions by John Nelson, who has served as chairman of the association's building fund committee, along with Stan Searle.
By the conclusion of the awards breakfast, folks had donated both large sums and small, totaling more than half of the outstanding mortgage balance. That's when John Dvorak of Marion, KS, Best of Trails President and a Director on the ITLA board, walked to the podium and presented a check for $10,250. The mortgage was paid in full! (pictured: Roger Hutton(L) receiving matching funds presented by John Dvorak (R))
Additionally, $1,000 contributions, with the matching fund, qualified donors for having their brands carved in stone at the ITLA office. These included Joe and Debbie Assad; John and Debra Helm; Bill and Corena Henderson; John and Beth Stroh and the Midwest Texas Longhorn Association. The respected "B-Bar-D" of Dolores and the late Bill Anthony will go on the wall, sponsored by Dickinson Cattle Co. And the "Diamond W" of Joyce and the late Col. Eddie Wood will be added to the wall--in return for the donations of Bob and Pam Loomis of Marietta, OK; Dick and Peg Lowe of Horton, MI, and John and Darlene Nelson. |

| ITLA ANNOUNCES ELECTION RESULTS
ITLA's October elections are complete and the results were announced at the October 27th Annual Membership Meeting held at the 2012 Convention in Oklahoma City.
The following officers and directors were elected:
PRESIDENT, Roger Hutton was elected to a third term as President of the registry. Prior to his two years as President, Roger had served five yeas as Director of Region 9.
VICE PRESIDENT, Larry Lonero was elected Vice President, succeeding Stan Searle who had held the office the prior two years. In 2011/2012 Larry was Director representing Region 10. He also served as Treasurer and as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee.
DIRECTOR REGION 7 (Formerly 9), Lana Daniell, from Tahoka, Texas, was elected to a full term. Lana had served the prior two years after appointment to serve out the second term of Roger Hutton following his election to his first term as President.
DIRECTOR REGION 4 (Formerly 6), Randy Witte, from Peyton, Colorado, was elected to a second full term. During his first term Randy served as Chair of the Communications Committee.
DIRECTOR REGION 9 (Formerly 8), Steve Bryson, from Blountsville, Alabama, was elected to his first term on the Board filling the seat vacated earlier in 2012 by the resignation of Bob Mottet.
DIRECTOR AT LARGE #1, Gary Bruch, from Strong City, Kansas, returns to the Board after in the past having served as Director and as President. Gary succeeds John Nelson who served two full terms as an At Large Director.
DIRECTOR REGION 7, Gary Don Taylor, of Okarche, Oklahoma was elected to his first term on the Board, succeeding John Dvorak who served two full terms.
DIRECTOR REGION 9 (Formerly 10, Position 2), John Helm of Red Oak, Texas, was elected to his first term on the Board succeeding Bill Burton who served two full terms.
In addition to election of the Officers and Directors above, there were a series of changes to the Bylaws before the members for consideration. These changes were required to implement changes to the governance of the association.
In early July, President Hutton sought volunteers to serve on the Strategic Planning Committee. Larry Lonero, Chair, along with Stan Searle, Kirk Dickinson and Lana Daniell were appointed and served on the committee. The committee developed a strategic plan which has been approved by the Board. In accordance with the Presidents charge the committee also undertook a study of the Regional alignment which determines the makeup of the Board. After careful study the committee brought a proposal before the Board, which provided for a four year transition from 20 Board Members to 13 Board members. Following discussion, the Board, by vote of the majority, acted to put the plan before the membership for action.
The plan was presented to the members in the form of five revisions to the bylaws. Changes to the bylaws require a vote if at least two thirds of the members voting in order to be approved.
Ballots were returned to the independent accounting firm where they were tallied. Results were then officially provided to the President.
All five changes were approved by a margin well in excess of the two thirds required and are now in effect.

Feedback on the Championship Convention and Show...
We have been heavily involved in the ITLA and just recently joined the TLMA. Met lots of really neat folks and LOVED the whole event. Great job to ALL of those involved in making the event so successful.....Kevin Kelly
Here are our thoughts. Well planned out meeting. The ITLA show and the horn measurement worked well. The staff of both organizations were very helpful and we enjoyed seeing everybody. The ITLA breakfast was well attended and we enjoyed it. You all did an outstanding job.
Thanks, Bill & Corena Henderson.

From: Kris Ruppert Subject: ITLA Championship show
Thank you all for a wonderful show! Our family had the best time and the kids from NETLA made forever memories, it was all we expected and more!
It was so nice to put a face to the names as I've spoken to Trish & Robin on several occasions. Couldn't find two more helpful & gracious people.
When I heard the event was going to take place in center city OKC, I wasn't sure how that was going to work, though I loved the facility and for selfish reasons,
it cuts many hours off a drive into Texas. Having the stockyards, restaurants and all the shopping that close by was so convenient.
Thanks again & great job!
The Texas Longhorn Extravaganza was well organized, well executed, well attended . . . and by all accounts the most important industry event in decades. Lots to see and do, in an excellent venue. Much more of a "happening" than any one Longhorn organization has ever accomplished. The ITLA and TLMA packed a lot of enjoyable and educational activities into two days--resulting in a great return on investment of time and travel cost.
When the word gets out, the attendance at next year's Texas Longhorn Extravaganza will be even bigger! Stan Searle
The TLMA World Championship is a horn measuring event with careful detail to tip to tip measurement, total horn, which measures around the curl, and horn base circumference. Measurements are calculated to 1/16th of an inch by a team of skilled, experienced horn masters. This event has built momentum for many years and has great influence on Texas Longhorn family popularity.
The multiplication factor for 2012 was the joint-event effort where TLMA measuring events and ITLA judged shows were combined. There were ITLA business meetings, educational seminars, banquets, awards presentations; all held right in the center of down town Oklahoma City. It was not a two ring circus, but a 5 ringer most of the time, starting early, and going late.
Darol Dickinson
Best event I have been to in years. The Membership told the boards what they wanted. The TLMA and the ITLA boards stepped up and put on a great event that benefited all breeders.
Brent Bolin
The joint event was wonderful. Not only did a lot more people get to see our cattle but Debbie and I got to see a lot of old friends - one I thought was dead and several I thought had left the industry. They hadn't, they have just been chasing horn. We also got to meet a number of folks we didn't know. The TLMA has done a great job of getting new people involved with Texas Longhorn Cattle and revive the interest of others. The staff and officers of the ITLA and the TLMA worked beautifully together to bring the Texas Longhorn industry the best event we have been to in the 26 years we've been raising Texas Longhorns.
The TLMA's World Championship Measuring was outstanding. It was great to see over 300 of the longest horned Texas Longhorns in the breed in one place so you could compare and appreciate. The International Championship Shows were packed with quality cattle and the competition was tough. In addition there was a Texas Longhorn Sale, educational symposiums, social events, award banquet and breakfast, the ITLA's annual meeting and installation of new officers and an outstanding ITLA Youth Show all in two days. Everyone was tired but no one was bored. If they do it again, I recommend you attend. Not only is it something to see, it is an event you are proud to be a part of.
Happy Trails, Joe Assad

M atthew (9/10/1999 - 10/02/12)
On October 2, 2012 a call from Jacob Bullion informed Joe Assad that Matthew, a bull bought from Assad, had died.
Matthew was sired by Moses, out of Miss Texas, and born at the Kat-El Ranch near Brenham, Texas September 10, 1999. He was the first Texas Longhorn Herd Sire to have all 11 of The Greatest Texas Longhorn Herd Sires of All Time in his ancestry: Texas Ranger JP, Bail Jumper, Overwhelmer, Don Quixote, Impressive, Cowcatcher, Measles Super Ranger, Senator, Classic, Bold Ruler, and King.
As a yearling, Matthew was named Jr. Champion Bull twice and Reserve Jr. Champion once at three ITLA Shows; Red River 2000, Chisholm Trails 2000, West Texas 2000. Matthew was best known for winning Get of Sire in 2007, 2008, and 2009 at The International Texas Longhorn Championship Show. He also won Get of Sire at the 2009 Houston Livestock Show. Matthew has also produced a number of show champions. The latest was Acts 1:8, who won All Age Grand Champion at the 2011 International Texas Longhorn Championship Show.
Matthew was also known for producing outstanding foundation cows that displayed show quality conformation with a little extra horn and beef. Texas Longhorn owners from 14 states and one foreign country purchased his offspring. Twenty-six of his sons were purchased as herd sires and several that were purchased as calves at side or inside also became herd sires.
He was purchased in 2010 by Jeffery & Eileen McDonald and spent his last years breeding the Texas Longhorn herd of their daughter Alisha and son-in-law Jacob Bullion's near Huntsville, Texas.
