Around the Campfire
There's been plenty of conversation about Longhorn breeders working together on common objectives. Now two organizations have stepped up, big time, to combine energies and talents to move the Longhorn industry forward. ITLA and the Texas Longhorn Marketing Alliance (TLMA), through their respective Boards of Directors, have entered into a Cooperative Agreement that will focus on several areas, with neither duplicating the efforts of the other.
It's a perfect fit-TLMA does not compete with us and ITLA doesn't compete with them, and we all want to promote the Texas Longhorn! The timing could not be better, in view of the pressures on cattlemen from the drought conditions and the general economy.
Beginning in February, each issue of the Texas Longhorn Journal will devote several pages to news and events related to ITLA. In addition, the TLMA will contract to use its professional staff to produce the 2012 ITLA Membership Directory. This will assure our members of a larger Directory, generating significantly more revenue for our Association than in years past
Another major aspect of our agreement is that we will be exploring the possibility of holding our 2012 Convention and Show in conjunction with the Longhorn World Championship. If we can find a facility that will accommodate all four events-our convention and show, the LWC horn measurements and sale-it will assure a big increase in both our attendance and show entries. This will be accomplished with no compromise of the sovereignty of either organization. It's just a simple matter of combining compatible Texas Longhorn events to deliver greater value to the members of both groups while realizing substantial economies for the two organizations.
Both ITLA and TLMA will support the activities of the other. We will encourage our members to participate in the elite sales events hosted by TLMA . . . and they will encourage their members to take advantage of the registration and transfer services of our Association. We have already announced extremely economical dual registration fees (as low as $4.00 through year end) as an added inducement for placing cattle in the ITLA registry.
We will continue to look for ways that ITLA can work closely with TLMA to add value to all registered Texas Longhorn cattle. Your Association is strong and your Board of Directors is committed to building upon past successes. One of the next member-friendly developments that you can look forward to is the ability to register and transfer cattle Online. As this project takes shape, you will be kept informed through the e-Drover and also through the new communication opportunity we have in the Texas Longhorn Journal.
Communication in the International Texas Longhorn Association is a two-way proposition. I urge you to talk to your Regional Director or any of the officers, sharing your ideas on how we can improve our service to you and to the entire "Longhorn family." Harmonizing the interests and efforts of ITLA and TLMA is one of the ways we can accomplish this.
Regards,
Roger Hutton President, ITLA |

ITLA and TLMA Enter Into Cooperative Agreement
In a landmark pact intended to help Texas Longhorn producers weather the drought and down economy, ITLA and the Texas Longhorn Marketing Alliance (TLMA) have reached a Cooperative Agreement. The arrangement will not affect the independence of either entity and is focused exclusively on cooperative efforts to build recognition and value for all Longhorn herds. Features of the agreement include several pages of each issue of the monthly Texas Longhorn Journal being devoted to ITLA news and events.
The TLMA will actively encourage its members to utilize the economical registration and transfer services of ITLA--which has already put forth a drastically reduced fee schedule for "dual registrations" received before year end. Reinforcing the attractiveness of the dual registration fees, ITLA president Roger Hutton commented that "For a few dollars apiece, a dual registration gives you a gold embossed ITLA certificate with a color photo of the animal. And when it comes to prompt, accurate handling of paperwork, our staff is the best in the business."
A third key feature of the Cooperative Agreement between the organizations is the exploration of the benefits of holding the 2012 ITLA Convention and Championship Show in conjunction with the Longhorn World Championship (LWC) horn measurement awards and sale. The goal is to increase participation in all four of these major industry events. On that point, Hutton quoted a Longhorn breeder and ITLA member who always takes part in the LWC but has never exhibited in the ITLA show. "If I could bring my cattle to both the LWC and the ITLA show at the same place and time, I'd probably bring 20 entries."
ITLA Show Committee Chairman Larry Lonero, who participated in formulating the Cooperative Agreement, emphasized that "Even if we are able to move up to a much nicer venue, by coordinating with the LWC, we will stick with the same budget as if we decide to return to the Glen Rose facility. The difference is that we will attract a lot of new exhibitors and spectators, adding greatly to the prestige of the International Championship Show."
Wes Chancey, CEO of the TLMA said, "We are extremely pleased to have such a close working relationship with the ITLA, which resulted in the ability to reach an agreement to cooperate on many issues. Both organizations are very aware that we exist to serve the breeders of the Longhorn industry, and this cooperative agreement will allow each of us to do more for our members. Operating more efficiently and effectively while reducing costs will benefit everyone. We are especially excited to have the opportunity to bring the members of both groups together at our events. The chance to build personal relationships with other breeders is good for our members and good for the Longhorn industry."
The respective Boards of Directors of ITLA and TLMA have approved the Cooperative Agreement, which includes the pledge to "look for ways to provide special rates for services to members to help Longhorn breeders control costs."

Tributes to some of our Lost Friends....
Don Limb
Donald Limb of Washington, Texas, has passed away. He authored the detailed "Real Butler Story." Don's self-described approach to the Butler breed was to "fanatically attack the sketchy facts and fiction of the whole Butler tribe with unquestioned detail." He utilized court records, auction receipts, wills, registration certificates, interviews and years of experience in his investigative approach to this early pioneering Texas family.
Unknown to most, Don authored the flight procedures for space shuttles from the Houston Space Center for 13 years. If there was a problem between here and the moon, astronauts quickly read the procedures that documented how to correctly deal with any or all technical problems. Don had one of the highest IQs at the Space Center. He had over 300 engineers under his authority, him being one of the few with only a high school diploma.
Don served in several national and affiliate positions both ITLA and TLBAA. He raised Butler family cattle with his wife Suzanne, and their daughter.

Reminder to Affiliates...
Most regional Texas Longhorn organizations affiliated with ITLA do not have a requirement that their members have joined ITLA. So, occasionally, someone is elected to serve as an officer or director who is not a current, paid-up member of ITLA. Article 12 of the ITLA By Laws (Rules, regulations, and procedures governing the affiliation of state and regional organizations) states that "all Officers and Directors of ITLA Affiliates must be members of the ITLA in order to hold office in their local affiliate."
The Affiliates Committee, according to chairman Stan Searle, wants to remind affiliate leaders of the requirement. By referring to the annual Membership Directory, they can make sure that their regional association officers and directors are current members of ITLA. Because registration and transfer fees are doubled for non-members, the $60 annual dues are quickly recovered-which is another reason for reminding everyone to maintain an active ITLA membership. |
|
Thank you for your continued support of the International Texas Longhorn Association's E-Drover. We are looking forward to the next year with great enthusiasm and optimism.
We hope that you, your family and friends will enjoy a safe and memorable holiday season.
Merry Christmas!
