Howdy.

For the past week I have been, and am still, on an RV trip with Carol, my daughter Jamie, her husband George, and our 8 and 11 year old granddaughters, Makena and Delaney. Needless to say, we have had a great time in fellowship with each other and in seeing our beautiful country. How could life get better than being with family, running down the road with sights of God's creation, like the Grand Tetons, running past outside the window, while listening to John Denver ballads like Carolina On My Mind, West Virginia, and Colorado Rocky Mountain High? The trip has sure allowed me to reflect on and appreciate the abundance with which God has blessed me...like being a part of the ITLA.

In this month's issue, I want to update you on the status of iRegister, The Extravaganza, and inform you about our upcoming ITLA election.

Internal testing of iRegister, by the developers and our ITLA staff, while continuing, is largely complete. We have now begun testing by a group of ITLA members. This final testing will continue through the formal release to members on July 1st.

As you have already seen, promotion of the Longhorn Extravaganza by both the ITLA and TLMA, is in full swing. Remember the dates are a month earlier than normal, so be sure and get your registration for the Convention and your entries for the Championship Show and Futurity in as soon as possible. Last year, in its first production, the Extravaganza was a huge success. The few things that did not meet our or your expectations are being fixed and in addition, we have added two significant events: a Trail Drive in downtown Oklahoma City and the ITLA is sponsoring its first ever Championship Futurity. That will make this year's Extravaganza an even more exciting event. So, don't miss it...get your registration and entries in now. All of the forms you need are available at www.itla.com.

As with any major event, registrations and entry fees cannot cover the full cost.  So, we are dependent on your extra support through donations and sponsorships. Our full sponsorship program has been provided in recent e-blasts and a link to the web site will be included in this issue. Early response to our sponsorship opportunities has been significant, but more help is needed. So, please pitch in and help make the Extravaganza an event that will exceed your expectations. A big thanks to all of you who have already committed to sponsorships. And a big "please help us" to all of you who have not yet settled on your sponsorship.

The Nominating Committee has completed its work and has submitted a slate of candidates for Officer and open Director positions. In accordance with ITLA bylaws, nominating ballots will be mailed by June 21, 2013. Final ballots for voting will be mailed by August 7, 2013. Election results will be announced at the Annual Membership Meeting held in connection with our ITLA Convention at the Extravaganza.

I hope you enjoy this June issue and that your summer is all you want it to be.

Best regards,

Roger Hutton

Small Farmers Benefit from Ruling:
Chicken fight: Study backs farmer in pollution battle with EPA

Chicken Rancher_EPA Published May 23, 2013  foxnews.com

West Virginia poultry farmer Lois Alt didn't chicken out when the Environmental Protection Agency threatened her with fines of $40,000 per day, and even though the federal regulators eventually backed off, she's taking them on in a legal case that could benefit thousands of small farmers.

Alt, who owns the small Eight is Enough poultry farm in the town of Old Fields, was hit with the fines after EPA officials claimed high levels of nitrogen in her chickens' waste were fouling waterways. She fought back by filing a lawsuit of her own in federal court of the Northern District of West Virginia, and although the EPA dropped the fines, a judge has kept the case on the docket. Alt's lawyers argue the EPA is wrong to deny small operations like hers the Clean Water Act's statutory exemption for "agricultural stormwater," which big farms get and believe the massive agency has to change its rules - and use better science.

"[T]his Court's ultimate decision on the merits will benefit all parties, including EPA and many thousands of farmers, by clarifying the extent of federal CWA 'discharge' liability and permit requirements for ordinary precipitation runoff from a typical farmyard," the court ruled in rejecting the EPA's bid to have the case dismissed.

Alt's case could get a boost from a new University of Delaware study, which shows the EPA has been overestimating the environmental effect of runoff from feedlots and small farms like Alt's for years. The study found that the level of nitrogen found in chicken manure is 55 percent lower than the decades-old standards set by the EPA. Those findings could give Alt and her legal team powerful ammunition when they go to court on behalf of small farmers everywhere.

"Ms. Alt has courageously taken on EPA not just for her own benefit, but for the benefit of other farmers," said American Farm Bureau Federation President Bob Stallman. "She refused to back down from her principles despite the best efforts of EPA and environmental groups."

The Delaware study raises the possibility of many farmers having been wrongly fined for polluting the ecosystem in the past, a prospect that would only confirm the suspicions of farming advocates.

"For me, it is not surprising, because the way in which the EPA works...it does not have a whole lot of credibility," Don Parrish, the American Farm Bureau Federation's senior director of regulatory relations, told FoxNews.com. "They do have positive goals, but there's a real disconnect in the nature of interpreting science in modern agriculture.

"It's a systematic application that is putting farmers in a negative light," he added.

The EPA did not return requests for comment...

R-CALF USA Pleased With Final COOL Rule Releasedusda_cool

Billings, Mont.- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released its final rule on country of origin labeling (COOL) today, which also is the deadline the World Trade Organization (WTO) imposed on the United States to modify COOL. In June 2012, the WTO found that the way COOL was being implemented was causing imported livestock from Canada and Mexico to be disadvantaged. As a result of that finding, the WTO directed the United States to modify COOL to bring it into compliance with WTO rules by May 23, 2013.

"USDA's final rule is right on the mark," said R-CALF USA COOL Committee Chair Mike Schultz adding, "We are pleased that USDA did not weaken  COOL in response to the WTO's attack on our domestic food labeling program."

The WTO alleged that the existing COOL regulations require more information from cattle suppliers than is actually transmitted to consumers via a label on beef as a basis for its finding that COOL disadvantages foreign livestock.

Under the final COOL rule, all origin labels for muscle cuts of meat slaughtered in the U.S. must now specify the production steps of birth, raising, and slaughter of the animal from which the meat is derived that took place in each country listed on the label.

"By requiring the locations where each production step occurs to be listed on the label, the final COOL rule addresses the WTO's criticism by requiring all the information collected from cattle suppliers to be transmitted to consumers," Schultz explained.

Schultz said the final COOL rule also ensures that labels are accurate by putting an end to the industry practice of using a multi-country label on meat derived exclusively from animals born, raised, and slaughtered in the United States when a meatpacker comingles any amount of foreign product during a production day.

"By correcting this huge loophole, the final rule restores the credibility of our labeling program and provides consumers with accurate origin information," Schultz said.

R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard explained that COOL is necessary to facilitate competition for U.S. cattle and provide choices for U.S. consumers.

"Without COOL it is the meatpacker and not the consumer that decides from what country cattle will be sourced to satisfy consumer demand for beef. Only with COOL can consumers trigger a demand signal for cattle sourced from U.S. farmers and ranchers, which they can do simply by consistently choosing to purchase a USA product," concluded Bullard.

Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association Invites you to a...

Texas Longhorn Field Day

When: 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013

Where: Randy & Marsha Witte's, 15525 Sweet Rd., Peyton, CO 80831

Hello Everyone:

Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 6. That's the day you're all invited to our place for what will be a fun-filled Texas Longhorn Field Day! This is a joint gathering of folks in both Mountain States Texas Longhorn Association and Mountains and Plains Texas Longhorn Association.

logo_MPTLAAmong the activities will be a heifer judging exercise and a halter-breaking demonstration by Kenny Richardson. Please pay attention to the halter demo, because we want to encourage more of us to enter halter classes, as well as loose cattle classes, at next year's National Western Stock Show. The MPTLA and MSTLA have joined forces to produce next year's National Western Texas Longhorn Show in Denver. The show will have one judge for all classes, but will award qualifying points for the world championship shows in both TLBAA and ITLA-a first!

This is also a heads-up call to enter the Longhorn show at Colorado State Fair the end of summer.

We'll begin at 11 a.m. with a judging exercise for a class of loose young heifers, then steers and possibly bulls. Stan Searle and/or Gary Lake will critique our placings. We'll then break for lunch around noon, and about 1 p.m., Kenny will show his halter breaking technique using four portable panels and a show stick. Then Ashley Fillmore, a veteran at cattle showmanship, will offer tips on showing a heifer, steer or bull at halter. Finally, Gary Cole will demonstrate how he puts a ring in the nose of a bull belonging to Clyde Peek. Bulls shown at halter must have nose rings

There will also be a Silent Auction of items donated by you folks-anything you think some of your fellow Longhorn breeders might like to bid on. Proceeds from the auction will go to the National Western Texas Longhorn Show fund, used for awards that will include some nice trophy buckles to top winners. Note: We already gained a nice donation to start the fund, with $700 raised with the sale of donated semen from some famous old bulls, thanks to Glen Lewis.

Our premier donated Silent Auction item is being completed right now. It's a beautiful hand-sewn quilt crafted by Dee Caldwell. Bring any item you want-large or small-it will all go to a worthwhile endeavor.

Instructions to our place (15525 Sweet Rd., Peyton, CO 80831). We're a quarter mile east of Elbert Rd., on Sweet Rd. Elbert Rd. is exactly 5 miles east of the town of Falcon on Hwy. 24; Sweet Rd. is exactly 5 miles north on Elbert Rd. Note: If you're coming from the north, one way is to go to the town of Kiowa (Hwy. 86), drive 30 minutes down to Sweet Rd. Also, Sweet Rd. is a "broken road"-the east turn is 1/8th mile south of the west turn. So don't turn west.

At our last meeting in May at Castle Rock, Justin Johnson graciously offered to host the field day at his place, but the place recently sold, so that's why we're not gathering there.

And finally, lunch is furnished, so don't bring anything but yourselves. Here's a good idea, though-try to bring someone with you who may want to join us-a prospective owner or breeder. All we need is some idea of how many folks are planning to show up, so please give us an RSVP if possible.

Thanks and best wishes to all of you.

Friends and Members of the Houston Area Texas Longhorn Association (HATLA),

This past Saturday many of us were the guests of our gracious and generous hosts, Dr. John and Ms Chicki Mathias, at their country property, Grandpatch Farm, in north Austin County, Texas. (John and Chicki are not that formal or into titles, but I just wanted to show respect and appreciation.)

hatla_mat8

Old and new Texas Longhorn friends gathered together and loved it. We viewed some fine Texas Longhorn cattle in pasture. Sam Clegg, a Texas Longhorn breeder from the Victoria, TX area shared his experience in breeding, growing, and selling grass fed Texas Longhorn lean beef. The Mathias home, hospitality and catered lunch are world class. The lunch included "sliders," small hamburger sandwiches made from gently grilled Texas Longhorn grass-fed beef supplied by Sam. The sliders were wonderful, and there were other luscious dishes on the menu. If you were there, you know what a great occasion it was. If you missed it, you should really decide now that you will not fail to attend when you get a lucky invitation like this.

We declared HATLA annual membership fees to be due following the meeting, and most members in attendance paid up at that time. We will send out a separate email to HATLA members with instructions how to send their check to our Treasurer, Richard Scalzitti. We will also send out an email that discusses some of our HATLA objectives for the coming year.

The good Lord blessed us with wonderful weather, and it was a day of seeing old friends, making new ones, seeing beautiful cattle, enjoying outstanding food, learning about new markets, getting important chapter business done and making plans for next year.  In other words it was a Texas Longhorn day.  Joe Assad

Chewing the Cud...

A blonde had just totaled her car in a horrific accident. Miraculously, she managed to pry herself from the wreckage without a scratch and was even applying fresh lipstick when the state trooper arrived.

"Wow!" the trooper gasped, as he wiped off the sweat from the desert heat. "Your car looks like an accordion that was stomped on by an elephant. Are you OK ma'am?"

"Yes, officer, I'm just fine" the blonde chirped.

"Well, how in the world did this happen?" the officer asked as he surveyed the wrecked car.

"Officer, it was the strangest thing!" the blonde began. I was driving along this road when from out of nowhere this TREE pops up in front of me. So I swerved to the right, and there was another tree! I swerved to the left and there was ANOTHER tree! I served to the right and there was another tree! I swerved to the left and there was ...."

"Uh, ma'am", the officer said, cutting her off, "There isn't a tree on this road for 30 miles. It looks like that was just your air freshener swinging back and forth."

Here's a photo I wanted to share with e-Drover readers. Our past MSTLA president, Kevin Trigueiro, re-visited his old home state of Colorado the other day to say "howdy" to us and his favorite cow, which elected to stay at our place rather than move with Kevin and his family to Texas a couple years ago.

I snapped this picture of Kevin and Shadowz Sword 24-6, just to show that our editor still keeps his hand in the Texas Longhorn business. These days, Kevin and his family--wife Dawn and children Ian, Kaden, Austin, Jasmin and Joelyn--make their home in Mineola, Texas.      --Randy Witte, President, MSTLA
