Wouldn't you love to be fly on the wall..
When the Longhorns treated themselves for flies by wrapping themselves in flypaper?
Jo and Dagmar Schaab of Sunset Ranch Longhorns in Farmersville, Texas sent in this picture. One of two Longhorns, Connie and Sunny, had apparently gotten the fly wrap down from a stall and covered themselves in it like mummies! This is "after" most of it had been removed!
Send us your favorite unique Longhorn photos, we would love to share some of them here in the E-Drover. |

Around the Campfire
Howdy,
Spring busted out all over here in North Texas a few weeks ago, and then some cold air came in to shock us. But, along with it came rain. God always knows what He is doing. We needed the rain and it is a blessing.
Spring is when things come back to life following winter; including the Texas Longhorn Industry. The show season is getting under way. It kicked off with two great accomplishments for the ITLA. See the article in the Texas Longhorn Journal for April on the developing show events associated with the Denver National Western. Thanks to Randy Witte, President of ITLA's MSTLA Affiliate for the leadership he is providing in this evolution. The ITLA held a show at the Houston Livestock Show, the first one ever for ITLA associated with that great livestock event. Thanks to Bill Henderson and Joe Assad for the great work they did with the Houston Livestock Show to get the ITLA into the event. It was well attended and from all reports, a very successful ITLA show. The Houston Livestock Show is very happy with the results of our ITLA debut and is asking us to come back in the future. Thanks to all of you who took your cattle and made it a great success. You can refer to the scheduled shows on our ITLA web site for other shows coming up. I encourage you to attend if you can.
Another sure sign of spring in the Texas Longhorn Industry is the return of the public sales. The TLMA's Legacy Sale, a premier event in the industry, was held in Dallas a couple of weeks ago and provided all who attended a superior experience. The average price for the sale was very good, hopefully signaling a return of better times in our breed. The event was well attended and folks had a great time. Trish David took the ITLA booth to the sale and provided early demonstrations of the capabilities of IRegister, our new on-line registration system that is in final testing and will soon be made available for your use. Look for more promotional information from the ITLA and in the Texas Longhorn Journal.
Major sales will be held almost every weekend over the next two months This week end is the Hudson Valentine/Winchester Futurity in Kentucky; on April 12-13 is the Red River Sale in Oklahoma, followed on April 20 by the Cherry Blossom Sale in Virginia; on April 26-27 is the Midwest Longhorn Sale in Kansas; May 23-24 is the Red McCombs Fiesta Sale; and on May 10-11 is the Cattle Barons Sale in Navasota, Texas, followed by the Millennium Futurity on May 17-18 in Glen Rose, Texas; headquarters city of the ITLA. Thanks to the promoters and sponsors of these quality sales. These are all wonderful opportunities for you to add quality cattle to your herd, or to just attend and learn more about our exceptional breed of cattle and fellowship with other breeders. I encourage you take advantage of these opportunities.
Planning is underway by the Championship Show and Convention Committee, led by Vice President Larry Lonero, for the Longhorn Extravaganza to be held in Oklahoma City on September 20th and 21st. We will be building on what we did right with the first time event last year and correcting what we did wrong, so I know it will be a successful event. I encourage you to mark your calendars and look for more information to come soon.
About a month ago I appointed a ITLA Youth Scholarship Organizational Committee to develop a scholarship fund for the ITLA. This idea came from Gary Don Taylor of Okarche, Oklahoma and he is serving as Chair of the Committee. The ITLA Board will be considering the early recommendations of the committee at its meeting on April 16th and I look forward to reporting more to you on this exciting development next month. On another youth related development, RaeLynn Stevens, who led our Youth committee so very capably last year, has stepped down from Chair of the Committee. Thank you, RaeLynn, for your capable service. I have appointed Kevin Kelly of Marlow, Oklahoma to Chair the Youth Committee for 2013. Kevin and his family are active in the ITLA Show activities and he is excited to provide leadership to our youth. Thank you Kevin for accepting this important leadership role. I know the youth will benefit from your guidance.
Well, that is about all that comes to mind for this issue. I hope your Spring is enjoyable and that you take advantage of the many Texas Longhorn events scheduled over the coming months.
Best regards,
Roger Hutton
President, ITLA |

ITLA Show at Houston
submitted by Randy Witte
The ITLA, for the first time, held a sanctioned halter show as part of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on March 5. Show Chairman Bill Henderson of Spring, Tex., joined the participants in deeming the event a success and invites more folks from near and far to enter the Houston show next year.
"It was a very good show," Henderson said. "We couldn't have been more pleased. And the Houston show personnel were helpful and accommodating from day one."

"Everyone at the ITLA show said they had a good time and appreciated the great job of judging done by Stan Searle," said one of the participants, Joe Assad of Houston.
The venerable Stan Searle of Monument, Colo., is an ITLA certified judge, and Assad said he "gave outstanding reasons for his placings, and pointed out the positive characteristics of each Texas Longhorn at the show."
There were 37 entries in the ITLA show, a good number for a first-year show, but Henderson wants to build on it for 2014. He assures all prospective entrants for next year's show that they need not worry about logistics after arriving at the Reliant complex in Houston. "The show staff will take care of you!" he said.
Bill should know. He's one of the 28,000 show volunteers at Houston, which reigns as the largest of the stock shows and rodeos. The 80-year-old event ran from February 25 through March 17 this year.
Darol Dickinson of Barnesville, Ohio, pointed out that companies are filming cattle shows and sales at the major events live on-line. One is www.cattleinmotion.com and the other is www.dvauction.com. Darol watched the Houston show and explained how the system works:
To view a live event on line each person has to apply for a name and password and go through a process of about 20 clicks. After doing that prior to the event a person can get on line within three to five minutes.
Meanwhile, Stan Searle said afterwards one of the Houston staffers mentioned to him that "many visitors ask where the Longhorns are," but they are there for only a few days. Perhaps a live Texas Longhorn exhibit throughout the show would be warranted.

Letter to the ITLA Youth
from Kevin Kelly
Youth Member,
My name is Kevin Kelly. Many of you know me, and some of you do not. I have accepted the 2013 ITLA Youth Chair position and am very excited....with your help....to make a difference in the youth association. I am very good friends with the past two ITLA Youth Chairmen, and I hope I can do as good a job as they have done.
I have held management positions of two very successful lumber companies, and am currently the Asst. G.M. of a large feed manufacturing company. I presently hold positions as Vice President of the Stephens County Livestock Growers Association, Parish Council of our church, Knights of Columbus, ITLA Judges Review Board, and ITLA Youth Scholarship Committee. Throughout these positions and community activities I hold or have held, the most important traits that have helped me to succeed have been HONOR, INTEGRITY, HARD WORK and COMMITMENT. This is how I will chose to lead the youth of our association.
We have seen some change in our association. I believe that no matter whether you agree or disagree with the changes that we have seen, one thing that we all do have in common is that ...WE LOVE OUR CATTLE....OUR TEXAS LONGHORN CATTLE. I will lead our youth in a way that we conform to the changes that have been made. I agree with and support the changes we have seen and ..... I am an ITLA member, a member that supports my organization. Whether I agree or disagree, one thing that I will always do is to support MY organization...... YOUR organization. We will hold strong to HONOR, INTEGRITY, HARD WORK, and COMMITMENT to our breed. We will ALWAYS support what is right and follow all rules and guidelines of our association. We will do everything in our power to support our breed which may, or may not be some of our futures.
A few of the initiatives that are already underway are: With the help of Roger Hutton, Larry Lonero and Gary Don Taylor we are working toward developing a youth scholarship fund, I would like to have a youth camp, and I am working on putting together a show in Duncan, OK to add to the number of shows we can compete in. The Duncan show will include an educational opportunity for our youth sponsored by myself about Beef Animal Nutrition. I have also discussed with the executive board of OYE (Oklahoma Youth Exposition) regarding the addition of the Texas Longhorn breed to their show classes, and have meetings with their executive board in May. The OYE is the largest youth cattle show in the nation.
With this being said, I need your help in three main areas. First, please let me know of any County Stock Shows in your state that do not currently hold a class for the Texas Longhorn. I would like to make sure that all of us have the opportunity to exhibit our breed in our hometowns. Please provide to me, town and contact #'s of the Fair board members or County Fair representative in order for me to help YOU show off your cattle in your hometown. I will contact them and do my best to get your breed represented.
Secondly, we need members and LOTS of them. Please encourage friends, family or anyone else interested that does not have the opportunity to get involved in our youth association. Even if they don't own cattle, let them show one of yours....get others involved in our breed and we will all flourish. NOW A CHALLENGE!!!!!! I commit to all of you that, I will add 3 new youth members to our association AND..... I will donate to the Youth fund $3 per new member that joins the ITLA as a youth member in 2013. The more members you add...the more money you will provide to YOUR Youth fund. If each current youth member were to add JUST THREE new Youth members, that would add 174 members and I would add $522 to our Youth fund. There is your challenge.
Finally, support our organization. Sell ad space for the e-Drover, get your parents to advertise, donate animals, money, or gifts to the youth program. ALWAYS bring a silent auction item to the shows and make yourself available to help in any aspect of the show as ring steward, gateman, help with the non-haltered show.......any extra effort on any of the youth will be appreciated. It is my intent to award our youth by point system for help in any extra capacity at shows to go toward the Youth Scholarship Fund in their name. The Youth Scholarship Fund has not yet been developed and....... If it does...you benefit.....if it doesn't.....you still benefit by sharing your HARD WORK and dedication to your association.
Our organization depends on member support. We must do more than paying our entry fees, coming to shows and going home. It is imperative that we support our association through advertising and donating in order to build our breed recognition. Whether you sponsor a class for $20 or spend $500 ....the amount doesn't matter. This extra COMMITMENT to our association is what will make us different than all the rest. The Angus breed did a great job of promoting their breed, and as a result, the prices of black cattle across the scales always bring more money than 'non black' animals. Is there really a difference when their hide is removed? We know that the Texas Longhorn is not a breed to make money on at the sale barn, but let's support our breed financially and verbally in order to prove the Texas Longhorn breed as a very viable and useful breed to the cattle industry.
We have also developed a solid relationship with the TLMA. Get to know these breeders. There are many fine people willing to help within the TLMA. I am a member of the TLMA and I am friends with several TLMA members. These folks are extremely kind and supportive of the ITLA and of our youth especially.
I look forward to working with all of you. Please send any questions and/or concerns to me at 2barmlonghorns@gmail.com or kevin@frontierfeedscompany.com . My home phone # is 580-658-0017 and my cell # is 580-467-1750.
Thanks!!!
Sincerely,
Kevin Kelly

The Indian Territory Texas Longhorn Association (ITTLA) Smoke Signal
submitted by Doris Snyder
ITTLA had a group of 34 people for our December 2012 meeting, meal and Dirty Santa at the Elks Lodge in Ada, OK.. If you were not able to make it you missed a good time, good food and lots of laughs at Dirty Santa.
Your ITTLA officers for 2013 are as follows:
President: Wesley Watson
Vice President: Jim Pruett
Secretary: Mary Ellen Maddox
Treasurer: Patti Gilbreth
Bob Weaver will stay on as Director for another 3 years.
Larry Johnston was elected to the Board of Directors for 3 years.
Let us all get behind all the officers and help in any way we can to make ITTLA a bigger and better association.
If your dues are usually paid at the end of the year, this is a 'friendly' reminder to be sure to send them to Patti Gilbreth. 614 West Rose Road, Marlow, OK 73055.
The minutes for the previous meeting were read by Patti Gilbreth as Mary Ellen Maddox was ill. Jim Pruett made a motion to approve minutes as read, Bill Cole seconded. Motion approved.
Patty Gilbreth, gave the Treasures report. As of December 15, 2012, gross revenue was $21,900.00, gross expenses were $19,251.99, leaving the ending balance of $17,436.90. Bill Cole made a motion to accept the Treasurer's report. Cody Moore seconded - motion passed.
Article IV - amendment, article V amendment, and VII - Memberships - Amendment - Glen West made a motion to adopt these changes to Article IV, Article V and Article VII - Memberships, Patti Gilbreth seconded - motion passed. It was noted that Life Memberships would remain at $200.00 and Associate memberships will be $25.00. Bill Cole made a motion this amendment be approved. Barry Judd seconded the motion. Motion pssed. (A copy of the new By-Laws for ITTLA is attached.)
In Article VII: pertaining to Membership Dues- this was changed to where everyone is to pay their dues at the end of the year or pay dues of $40.00. Charley always paid our dues in June and after his passing I continued to pay dues in June. In June of 2012 I paid my $25.00. When this change to the By-Laws came up I didn't catch that I had to pay again before the end of 2012 or pay $40.00. On calling this to Wes Watson's attention he agreed to give the people who pay in June and didn't pay before the end of the year until the end of February 2013, to pay $25.00 dues, otherwise your dues will be $40.00.
You can check this out in the-Laws.
Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. A student nurse found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn't need any help to leave the hospital.
After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let the student nurse wheel him to the elevator.
On the way down she asked him if his wife was meeting him. 'I don't know,' he said. 'She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.' |

ORVTLA hosts Longhorn Booth at Ohio Beef Expo
Darol Dickinson, left, of Barnesville, Ohio, and Ohio River Valley Texas Longhorn Association (ORVTLA) President Tim Miles, of Perrysville, OH were some of the 14 members of the ITLA affiliate who took turns working a booth at the Ohio Beef Expo at the Ohio State Fairgrounds March 14-17. Although this annual event is sponsored by Angus and other meat-cattle promoters, the trade show is still an open forum for other breeds.
Most viewed the Texas Longhorn display near the main front entrace. As Angus owners took a few seconds from their appointed routes the ORVTLA staff would try to get attention with, "Do you raise Texas Longhorn cattle?" Most replies were, "No, I raise Angus." Booth workers sympathized, "I am so sorry. We are here to help!"
Hundreds of pieces of ITLA promotion literature were shared as well as members' promo items. A bucket of candy was used to bait the kids and a constant large screen TV played films from start to finish. The success of the Expo TL display may not have set any records, but it kept the crowd aware and awake. |

Congress Passes Bill to Avert Meat Inspector Furloughs
by By Gretchen Goetz | March 22, 2013 Food SafetyNews.com
The House on Thursday passed a continuing resolution that will head off furloughs for U.S. meat inspectors that would have taken place this summer as a result of the sequester.
The measure, introduced by Sens. Mark Pryor (D-AR) and Roy Blunt (R-MO), passed the House by a vote of 318 to 109 today after breezing through the Senate Wednesday by a vote of 73 to 26, and will now go to President Obama's desk for signature.
The legislation will allow for the reallocation of $55 million in funds from other parts of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the agency's Food Safety and Inspection Service. This means that federal meat and poultry inspectors will not face furloughs and, consequently, meat plants will keep running without pause through the summer (meat and poultry plants can only operate when a federal inspector is present).
Meat industry representatives praised Congress for approving the funding, which was included in a larger $984 billion spending bill... READ THE REST OF THE ARTICLE HERE |

A new client had just come in to see the famous lawyer.
"Can you tell me how much you charge?", said the client.
"Of course", the lawyer replied, "I charge $200 to answer three questions!"
"Well that's a bit steep, isn't it?"
"Yes it is", said the lawyer, "And what's your third question?"
